CREATING INTERESTING TRAVEL PHOTOS By Chuck Palmer Bruges, Belgium (Using Framing Elements) Capturing special travel moments enables us to really experience the feeling of a time and place where we were changed forever. To paraphrase Jimmy Buffett, a travel photograph is a permanent reminder of a temporary feeling. Travel Photography tells our story that we get to relive time and again in the future. By capturing the landscapes, people, customs, cultures, transportation, history, and architecture, we get to share our experiences and maybe change a few perceptions people have about the world in which we live. Of course, along the way, we get to be creative in how we tell our travel story too. Travel Photography provides us with a great opportunity to be creative in so many genres of photography... Landscapes, Portraits, Architecture, Photo Journalism, Food, Documentary, Street, and Night Photography to name a few. So let s discuss a few photography techniques we can use for remarkable travel photos. Creative Travel Photography Techniques : Make good use of the best light in early morning and evening. You have certainly heard this tip before. But there is an added advantage while traveling. No crowds! Get out early, and stay out late to avoid the busloads of tourists walking through you favorite shot. Include people. Although you often want to avoid crowds, including people in your travel photos gives the viewer the feeling of being right there with you experiencing the moment. Position travel companions close to the camera with the landmark in the background if you want to feature them. Silhouettes of people enjoying a sunrise or sunset adds drama and interest.
CREATING INTERESTING TRAVEL PHOTOS contd. Dordogne River Canoe Trip - La Roque-Gageac, France (Include people in your scene) Creative Travel Photography Techniques contd. Add props and family members as models in your scene. Ask a family member to wear bright colors and to step into the scene looking like the typical tourist. An umbrella, or foods and drinks from the location make good props. Use Framing elements to surround your subject. Window frames or overhanging tree branches make excellent framing elements to focus your viewers on your main subject while making the photo much more interesting. Show Action. Your viewers will feel what you felt when you show the action you experienced. Use slow shutter speeds, or pan your camera while capturing moving subjects to convey motion in still photography. With your camera mounted on a table top tripod, hold it firmly against a street light pole, or wall to avoid camera shake during long shutter speeds. Shutter speeds 1/30 of a second or less work best for panning shots. Duval Street - Key West, FL (Panning moving subjects shows the action) See next month s newsletter for part two of this article.
Adobe Lightroom Tips and Tricks Painting with your perfect color By Chuck Palmer Note to Photoshop users... Adobe Camera Raw has the same tools and functions as Adobe Lightroom. You can use these tips and tricks in Camera Raw too! Three of the most powerful tools in Lightroom s Develop module are the selective adjustment tools. The Graduated Filter, Circular Filter, and most importantly, the Adjustment Brush really help us fine-tune our images. Many Lightroom users probably routinely adjust white balance, tonality, clarity, color saturation, sharpness, and noise in specific local areas of their photos. However, one of the most overlooked capabilities of these selective adjustment tools is the ability to load them with a Color! Have you ever wanted to paint the water in your image a little bluer? Or how about adding the rich glow of the warm sun to another area of your photo, or even another image. Let s look at an effective method to load your selective adjustment tool with just the right color. Follow the steps below to load your Adjustment Brush with a specific color hue and saturation already in your photograph. Step 1 In the Develop module, select the Adjustment Brush tool. Double Click on the word Effect in the Brush panel to reset all the sliders to zero. Step 2 Hit the F11 Key. A secondary window of the active photo will appear. With the secondary window open, click on the Color Swatch square next to the word Color in the Brush panel. A small Select a Color window will open. Notice you can select a color to paint by selecting a color with the Eye Dropper tool anywhere on this small palette. The color you select appears in the upper right corner of the palette. But don t stop here. Step 3 - Click and hold the eye dropper tool anywhere inside the small color palette, but keep moving your eye dropper to anywhere on your photo inside the secondary window just opened. Notice you can select your color of choice from anywhere in your photo. Do not release your mouse button until you have selected your exact color of choice. Notice as you move around the secondary window while holding your mouse button, the color selection changes in the upper right hand corner of the small color palette window. Release your mouse button over your color of choice. Your adjustment brush is now loaded with your chosen color hue and saturation. Step 4 Hit the F11 Key to close the secondary window. Paint the color you selected onto the area of the photo you desire. You can always re-open the Color Palette again to fine-tune the color saturation, or modify the hue. You might find it useful to select a specific color shade from one photo then without closing your selective adjustment tool, move to a different photograph to paint your desired color. I have often taken the rich blue colors from the water in one photograph and painted the water with the same rich blue color in a completely different photo. Give it a try! A special note to users of older versions of Lightroom... Older versions of Lightroom allow you to select colors from the primary window of the Develop Module via the same methods described above. If you have an older version, try selecting colors without opening the secondary window.

MEMBER SPOTLIGHT NANCY WILLIAMSON Originally an Ohio girl, I came to this area in 2003 as a result of a career move and have never looked back. Do I miss the cold, snowy, gray days of Ohio winters? Silly question. But by far the best part of moving to Florida was meeting my husband. We had worked in the same job field at Wright Patterson Air Force Base for many years, but had never met. Then, we both moved to Florida and met here. Just like a fairy tale I'm happy to say. After retiring as a Contracting Officer for the Air Force, I worked in a similar position at NASA for a few years, but am now retired for the second time and have never been busier. I have always had an appreciation of photography in terms of the amazing things an image can convey. But only recently did I realize that I could create some of that same magic myself. I bought my first DSLR, a Canon Rebel T3i, only five years ago and have no plans to upgrade. It does everything I need it to do. Coming to photography later in life means playing catch-up by immersing myself in everything about the subject. I try to take advantage of every opportunity to learn by reading, taking classes at Eastern Florida State College and attending as many Camera Club of Brevard events as possible. But the real learning comes from doing.
UPCOMING FIELD TRIPS October 10th Cracker Creek and the Historic Gamble Place Nature Preserve. Two part visit one hour boat ride and one hour at the Gamble Place. Nov 7 th Bus Trip St Augustine FULL 2016 January 9th - The Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens- Winter Park February 6th Scavenger Hunt March 5th Ft Christmas Historical Park April TBD Gatorland EARLY SELFIE Kemp Carson found great of example of a Very, very, very early selfie. The World s Largest Camera In this day and age of increasing miniaturization you might be supposed to find that the largest camera was in fact built very recently. Created by renowned photographer Dennis Manarchy, it takes large format to another level with its film format of 6ft by 4ft and an overall length of 35ft. Its resolving power is said to be 1000 times that of modern day digital cameras, although getting the film to the lab can be quite difficult.
MEMBER SUBMISSIONS CCB member Don Martin just came back from a road trip to the New England States and submitted this report I am a newcomer to the camera club and thought I would share some of my favorite photos from a recent road trip my wife and I took to New England. Our first visit was to the coastal towns of Camden, and Rockland, ME. We have been there several times and it is one of our Maine favorites, the Rockland Lobster Festival is always a highlight of this trip. Next stop was with my daughter and her family in Unity, ME for four days. We enjoyed the company of our three grandkids, taking day trips to a number of scenic areas, parks, and towns. Our next and final stop was the North Shore of Massachusetts, staying in Danvers with day trips to Gloucester and Rockport. We had lived on the North Shore area for thirty years but hadn't been to these seaside communities in over twenty five years. Funny how little changes in these historic towns. Hermann and Lib Schiefner sent this photo of a colorful North Carolina hillside and split rail fence to the camera club. The photograph was taken in the Blue Ridge Mountains just South of Ashville, NC. The fall colors are certainly beautiful. Thanks Lib and Hermann.
