1 A Bounty Of Concentration Ideas The following list contains both specific activities and general topics, some more detailed than others. This is just a starting point. Each idea can be expanded in many different ways. It will take your creativity and enthusiasm to turn them into outstanding concentration topics. You may want to use some of them for your summer homework. DRAWING PORTFOLIO (COULD ALSO BE USED IN 2D DESIGN PORTFOLIO) Draw a contour still life of personal grooming items Do an oil pastel of a landscape-real or imagined Do a newspaper negative space / charcoal drawing Do an interesting colored cross contour piece Do an illusionistic scene based on your childhood Do an expressive portrait in any color scheme Fill a glass jar with similar objects or use a jar of olives or pickles and draw in a full range of values using color Do a color craypas piece of a scene in your home or found objects enlarged or a still life in the style of Matisse Do an expressive piece based on a strong emotional experience Do a gestural style of drawing based on movement Fill a page with charcoal, smooth with cloth and with erasure, draw a figure. Go back into the work with charcoal and erasure as needed. Grid an interesting photo. Distort or warp the grid and draw, making sure to add your own voice to the work Draw or paint an imaginary landscape, skyscape, or seascape Create a work of art including drawing telling your personal history. You may include collage. Do a social commentary piece with limited color Draw a series of views of the same object on one page. This work should be in color on a toned piece of drawing paper. The drawing style should reflect a variety of mark making techniques Do a real or fantasy landscape drawing - color optional Do a reductive drawing using the eraser as a tool Do a drawing of vegetation making a close investigation of the structure of vegetation. Consider color variation, placement on the page and rendering. Use color chalk and/or color pencil. Create an architectural perspective showing a mastery of the drawing of deep distances on a two dimensional surface. Use a range of values to convey various areas of depth and volume. Do a portrait in color (full front or three quarters). Initiate the drawing by using yellow, then red, then green. Layer the face with these colors before using flesh tones. Pay attention to the structure of features and the contrasts of shadow areas.
2 Create a Shining Still Life - Choose five to seven objects, of which two must have a high shining surface. Consider the relationship among objects. The surface treatment of each object will appear stronger if the objects chosen have different surface textures. Do an M.C. Escher drawing - visual and psychological presentation. Escher puts together things and ideas which normally do not fit together. Research the artist. Choose one of his approaches but do not copy his work. Do Figure Studies- include a body of individual figure studies. One on black paper. One on gray paper. Four studies on white paper. Each drawing must include the entire figure and the immediate background. The range of values is significant. Black, gray, white media. Do a perspective drawing that demonstrates an understanding of linear perspective and shows size diminishment in a deep field of space. Create a Theater Production Program - The front cover of the program should be dynamic and illustrative. Use the wild color scheme of the Fauve artists (pictorial with wild and twisted colors) to create an abstract composition. Work in Modular Design - Create a single motif which can be repeated many times to produce an interesting fabric design. This single design unit must be dynamic within itself to create a totally complete composition having great visual movement.
