2 INTERACTIONS- INSPIRATION The Mandala Lakshmi is a Singaporean who grew up in Kabul, Afghanistan during the 70s and 80s. She is a trained Architect (Manipal Institute of Technology) and a Fashion Designer (National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi). She has taught fashion design, illustration, design and history at Lasalle School of the Arts and at NIFT- Delhi. She has illustrated books and manuals on disability for VHAI (Voluntary Health Association of India) and WHO (World Health Organization). During the significant time she has spent in Europe and the Asia Pacific she has studied art, architecture, jewelry and design, which has enabled her to incorporate cross-cultural elements in her works. She has a passion for art, not restricting herself to painting but indulging in all aspects of design. She has a plethora of work in various mediums such as Pen and Ink, Pencil colour, Charcoal, Acrylic and Watercolour The Mandala meaning Encircled essence has a concentric structure even if it may be dominated by squares or triangles. It, symbolizes unity, harmony, cosmic and psychic order serving as a tool in our spiritual journey, a model for the organizational structure of life itself; a cosmic diagram that embodies our relation to the infinite, the world that extends both beyond and within our bodies and minds. It represents an integrated view of the world, transcending all religions and continents, a microcosm and a macrocosm, we being a part of its intricate design. It appears to us in all aspects of life, the Earth, the Sun, the Moon and in our interactions; the circles of life encompassing friends, family and communities. Cross-cultural patterns of the mandala are seen in many religious traditions all over the globe, from Buddhist Stupas, Muslim mosques, Hindu temples, Christian cathedrals, Native American teepees, the Taoist Yin-Yang symbol representing opposition, as well as interdependence. In the interaction series of paintings symbolism derived from all these sources has been used to create a new set of symbols that may be viewed as contemporary forms suggesting the unity in diversity of thought of all humanity. Basic shapes such as the triangle, the circle, the square and the spiral used in the creation of any geometry have been used as building blocks along with forms and concepts such as the yin and Yang, the lotus, the gammadion cross, and the nautilus.
