1 Flag Day Target audience (age): Ensino Fundamental 1 Aims: get familiar with Flag Day, different flags and colors and design your own flag Duration: min. Organization: group work; individual work Materials: cardboard or paper, markers, colored pencils, worksheets, images of flags from different countries, and paint (gouache, if available) Preparation: Information about colors: Primary colors: These are colors that cannot be created through the mixing of other colors: red, blue, and yellow. Secondary colors: Primary colors can be mixed to produce secondary colors: yellow + blue = green; blue + red = purple; red + yellow = orange. Tertiary colors: They are made by mixing a primary color with an adjacent secondary color. When naming tertiary colors, the primary and secondary color names are joined by a hyphen (-), with the primary color always being the first one. Examples: red + orange = red-orange red + purple (violet) = red-purple (red-violet) blue + purple (violet) = blue-purple (blue-violet) blue + green = blue-green yellow + green = yellow-green Based on < Accessed on April 29, Information about Flag Day: The idea of an annual day specifically celebrating the flag is believed to have first originated in B. J. Cigrand, a schoolteacher, arranged for the students in a Fredonia (Wisconsin) public school to observe June 14 (the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of the and Stripes) as Flag Birthday. On June 14, 1889, George Balch, a kindergarten teacher in New York City, planned appropriate ceremonies for the children of his school, and his idea of observing Flag Day was later adopted by the State Board of Education of New York. On June 14, 1891, the Betsy Ross House in Philadelphia held a Flag Day celebration, and on the same day the following year, the New York Society of the Sons of the Revolution celebrated Flag Day. 2 Procedures: Bring pieces of paper with the primary colors: red, blue, and yellow. Ask students if they know the colors which result from mixing them up. Write on the board yellow + blue = green; blue + red = purple; red + yellow = orange and ask students to use their colored pencils and try the mix. If you have paint, have students mix the colors to check it out. Bring a variety of flags and have students make a survey of the colors in those flags. Ask students to make a list of all the colors that are used in the flags and which are more popular. Ask them why they think that some colors are used more often and why other colors are not used. For example, the American flag uses the colors red, white and blue because of the historical connection with Great Britain. The stripes represent the thirteen original colonies and the stars represent each of the current states. The design of the American flag has changed over time to reflect the changes in the number of states that are part of the union. Ask students what they know about the Brazilian flag. The national flag of Brazil comprises a blue celestial globe depicting a starry sky spanned by a curved white equatorial band with the national motto Order and Progress inscribed, within a yellow rhombus on a green field. Brazil officially adopted this design on November 19, 1889, replacing the flag of the Second Empire of Brazil. The flag s blue circle currently has 27 white five-pointed stars to represent the union s federated units each star representing a specific state, plus one for the Federal District. Hand students the worksheets. Ask them to find out what the colors of the Brazilian flag represent. Have them discuss why they think these elements have been included and what they mean. Have students design a class flag. They should discuss what is important about their class and what they think is more essential to represent in the flag. Have each group show their work to the rest of the class. Then, have each student design a personal flag that they can use to represent their lives up to this point. Ask students to present the flags to the class, explaining it and its elements. Wrap-up: The aim of the game is to go around the world reviewing flags and countries by reading the flashcards. Divide the class into two teams and have students line up. Show the first two students a flag flashcard, and the first student to name the country correctly wins this turn. Use the same procedure with the next students. The winner team is the one with more points. Consider each correct flag and its country a point.
