Project/Objective: Post-Modern Abstract GLE: I.2.A Create a mixed media sculpture using a variety of processes and techniques. Project Type: Assessment Materials: Var. of round & flat basketry reed (about 6 /student) Collection of old scissors Modroc (about 15 /student) Strong string of any type (not too thick) Bowls for water Bowls for mixing plaster Measuring cups (one for water, one for plaster) Table cover (newspaper, plastic etc) Joint Compound Safety: Use caution with sanders such as dremels etc, use caution when cutting Introduction: E.Q. How might people of one culture view the idea of abstract art, differently than people of another culture? E.Q. How might location alter what or how structures are created? E.Q. How is this process similar or different than the process of planning and building an industrial structure? Students will view and discuss the characteristics of non-objective sculptures and how structures may be formed using armatures. Students will also discuss the materials and products they are using to create their sculptures and how the nature of their materials might affect the outcome of their sculpture. Process: -Create an armature by using reed and weaving techniques (use string and glue as necessary) -Cover the freestanding structure with Modroc and smooth it. -Mix a 1:1/2 ratio of plaster to water to smooth a thin coating of plaster over the surface of your sculpture. -When dry, use sandpaper and a dremel as needed to smooth the surface of your sculpture -When completely smooth, paint sculpture with acrylic Workmanship: The pride and effort put into a job to create a presentable, professional outcome. A job well done, ready for viewing by the public. Directions: The guidelines set for the assignment in order to assess a student s comprehension of the objective. Creativity/Originali ty: An interesting, one of a kind approach to creating a composition, with the least amount of help Unacceptabl e 1 No pride, effort or workmanship shown at all. No directions followed, no effort shown No creativity or originality is shown Mediocre: 2 Little effort, unfinished, sloppy, dirty, unnecessar y Lines or marks. Paper is ripped, torn or wrinkled. Work has several creative/origi nal aspects. Hasn t yet reached full potential Exemplary: 5 Pride and effort are evident. No tears, wrinkles, unnecessary lines or marks, very neat and clean. 4 Additive Additive is a method of sculpting where a material is added to an object in order to create and end result. This method can be used with many different types of materials, including but not limited to plaster, clay, paper, natural fibers, plastic, fiberglass etc. For this assignment you will be using

This sculpture of a horse is even more exaggerated than the abstract in the previous slide and some may even consider this verge on a non-objective form of sculpting. Non-objective is a term that refers to something that cannot be identified by a specific, organic object. The second example shown here (right) is a non-objective sculpture by Karam Haydy.

The idea behind abstract and non-objective is that abstract can be either non-objective or objective, but non-objective work is always abstract.

Additive First create an Armature using reed and string. If needed use weaving techniques for a cleaner design. An Armature is the structure or framework for your sculpture.

Additive Begin covering the armature with plaster coated gauze. This substance is called Modroc. Make sure the plaster is as smooth as possible. This makes the armature firm.

Additive Applying plaster mud with hands is one way to cover your sculpture. Covering the sculpture with a coating of mud, in order to build up the surface and sand to a smooth surface.

Additive As the outer coating of mud is applied, take this time to add any additional objects onto your sculpture.

Additive Using a watered down plaster mud or liquid plaster (that has not thickened yet) is easily applied into a smooth finish with a paint brush.

Additive Use sandpaper to carefully smooth your sculpture so that rough, bumpy surfaces are smooth and graceful.

Additive Sanding your project, must be done carefully to avoid cracking and breaking. Breaks may be patched with glue or silicon. Be careful not to blow plaster away from your project. Instead, use your

Additive You may use a dremel tool in order to sand edges and hard to reach surfaces in your sculpture. This tool is not for sanding large areas.

Additive When you finish, you should have a completed sculpture that is free standing, smooth and that contains voids.

Additive Directions for Assignment: Use reed to bend into an armature for an abstract design Armature must be sturdy and must be able to stand alone. Cover and coat armature with a smooth surface of plaster then let dry. Sand surface smooth with sandpaper and a dremel as needed.

Additive Grading Criteria for Assignment must be smooth with no jagged edges or rough bumpy surfaces. must be free standing and must not rock or roll, but must stand sturdy and still. must contain at least one void. must not look like or resemble any realistic image, but must be completely abstract, meaning it is a non-objective piece of artwork.
