4 ACTIVITY INSTRUCTIONS The instructions below are to be used as a guide for implementing the activity. If there are photos, instruction sheets, worksheets, etc. there is a note "See additional materials ". These materials are located at the end of the activity. The "Time " column gives the estimated duration of each step of the activity. Step 1 Prepare the glue in advance: mix equal parts flour and water until glue is free of lumps. Pour into bowls.using newspaper, cover workspaces, one desk per pinata will be needed. At each workspace, place a stack of newspapers. Step 2 Instruct the participants to tear newspaper into 4 centimeter wide strips. They do not need to be perfect. While they are doing this, pass out balloons, paperclips, and a piece of tape-one per workspace. Step 3 Instruct the children unbend the paperclips, then blow up the balloons and tie them. Tape the knot flat with the paper clip partially beneath it. The paperclip will be later used to tie the rope to and needs to extend above the paper mache. Step 4 Distribute one bowl of glue per workspace. To paper mache, the newspaper strips need to be wet but not soaking, show them to remove excess glue between their fingers. The balloons should be covered entirely with strips of paper at least three times, with special attention paid to the area around the paper clip. Step 5 0:00:10
