To complete this set of assignments and, move on to the next set of assignments, you must: Select and complete three (3) assignments (you may only make one cell model). Assignment Completed Complete Fabric Cell Model Complete 3-D Cell Model Complete Jelly Bean Problem Complete Cellular Soap Opera Complete Celery and Janus Green Complete Does the Mystery Sample Contain Life Successfully complete the unit assessment with a minimum proficiency level of 3.
Fabric Cell Model Materials Cell One 18 x 18 piece of heavy solid-colored canvas Organelles One 6 diameter circle of scrap cotton fabric for nucleus One 2 diameter circle of solid black fabric for nucleolus One 6 x 4 patches of colored fabric shaped like a mitochondrion One 3 circle of white felt for vacuoles One 3 circles of black felt for lysosomes 16 of yarn for DNA 10 colored beads for genes (loop yarn through in a colored sequence) One meter of rick-rack, cut into varying segments to form endoplasmic reticulum 12 brown or black beads glued onto half of rick-rack to illustrate ribosomes (on rough endoplasmic reticulum) 20 black and brown beads to represent ribosomes Nine 3 diameter blue felt circles to represent Golgi bodies Modifications for Plant Cell Four pieces of green felt, 1 x 18 for cell wall Two 6 X 4 patches of green felt shaped like a chloroplast One 6 x 6 felt square (corners rounded) to represent the central vacuole Put all other organelles in the plant cell EXCEPT FOR LYSOSOMES. LEAVE OUT LYSOSOMES! Note: Be sure to save small samples of each organelle to attach to the back of the cell to form a legend. Next to each sample, print the name of the organelle represented using permanent marker. 1
Procedure 1. Trim corners to form a somewhat circular shape for an animal cell, or a somewhat rectangular shape for a plant cell. Be sure to glue a canvas pocket on the back of the canvas to hold index note cards. The pocket should measure approximately 4 x Cut out all of the organelles as directed. 3. Carefully glue each piece of cloth on the canvas. Spread it out to fill the entire area. 4. Glue three of the blue felt circles together to form the Golgi body. Glue each stack in the cell. Requirements and Limits: 3-D Cell Model The cell can be no smaller than 4" x 6", and no larger than 9" x 12". The cell must be 3-D (no posters). The model must be delivered in a box (e.g. shoebox, shirt box, etc.). Use clear drying glue. Avoid tape, pins and staples. Ideas for materials include: yarn, beads, toothpicks, pipe cleaners, string, straws, Styrofoam, Plexiglas, food, Play-Doh... Use many types and your imagination, but be sure it will stay together! (Note you must use three or more materials to make your cell.) You must identify all the organelles listed below for whichever cell you choose. The type of cell, your name and block must be identified somehow on the model and the key. DO NOT label the organelles on the model, use ID numbers. The key will identify which organelle is represented by each ID number. Organelles to be Included in BOTH CELLS: Cell membrane Nucleus Cytoplasm Vacuole Smooth ER Rough ER Ribosomes 2
Golgi apparatus Mitochondrion Nucleolus Lysosome Organelles to be Included in PLANT CELLS ONLY: Cell wall Chloroplast Do not include the lysosome. ***REMEMBER: Plant and Animal Cells have different shapes, and this should be reflected in your model. The Problem The Jelly Bean Problem (a lesson plan from Access Excellence) With the materials in hand, you are challenged to get the candy into your bag according to the following rules The candy must enter through a solid part of the bag. The inside of the bag may not be directly open to the external environment. The candies entering the bag must remain clustered together. Students may work with their hands in the bag to act as the inside of a cell. The candy may be eaten only if it enters the bag "cell" under the specified conditions. Materials 1 plastic shopping bag 1 pair of scissors 15 cm of string 4 pieces of wrapped candy Before being able to eat the candy, you must show your completed project to Mr. Hill! 3
Cellular Soap Opera (adapted for "Journey to Mars" from Human Body Explorations) Materials Bubble solution Water Two pieces of string, one about 1-1/2 feet (45 cm) long, the other about 2 feet (60 cm) long Straw Scissors Aluminum pie pan Two film cans, with tops and bottoms removed Sheet of black construction paper Pencil Safety Concerns: Scissors, bubble mixture. Discuss safe and proper use of scissors. Students will wear goggle while doing this activity. Procedure NOTE: It's easiest to do this activity with at least two people. One person can make the soap film and hold the handle while the other person explores how the film behaves. 1) Cut the straw in half with the scissors. 2) Thread the longer string through the two half-straws and tie the ends together to make a loop. Cut the excess string from the ends of the loop's knot. Move the string through the half-straws so that the knot is hidden inside one of the straws. This is your bubble frame. Figure 1: The bubble film apparatus 4
3) Create a handle for the frame by threading the shorter string through one of the straws and tying the ends together. An easy way to get the string through the straw is to tie it to the string loop you made in the previous step, and then pull the loop to bring the tied end through one of the straws. Then untie the knot and make the handle. The frame and handle should look something like the drawing in Figure 1. 4) Fill the pie pan with the soap solution, at least 3/4 inch (2 cm) deep. 5) Shape the bubble frame into a rectangle (as shown in Figure 1). Holding the frame by the handle, immerse the entire frame in the bubble solution. 6) Lift the frame up by the handle until the bottom of the frame is slightly out of the bubble solution and the half-straws are parallel to the table top. You should have a rectangular soap film between the two half-straws. If there isn t a soap film, try immersing and lifting the frame again. 7) Hold the soap film in front of a piece of black construction paper or other black material. Carefully observe the surface of the film. Blow gently on the film and watch what happens. 8) Wet your finger in the bubble solution. Gently poke it through the soap film. Then, wet your finger in plain water and poke it into the film. 9) Try gently poking a dry finger through the soap film. What happens? 10) Make a new film on the frame. Roll a film can (with the top and bottom removed) in the bubble solution to coat the surfaces of the can. Grasp the film can near one end and remove it from the A young museum visitor puts his hand through the "Soap Film Painting" exhibit. The exhibit is a large-scale version of Cellular Soap Opera. solution. If films have formed across the openings of the can, pop them. Insert one end of the film can through the soap film on the frame. If the film pops, make another and try again. 11) When you successfully insert a bubble solution-coated film can through the soap film, hold the can in this position and have your partner or someone else pass an 5
object (such as a pencil) through the openings in the can, from one side of the film to the other. 12) Try putting a dry film can through the soap film. Questions and Analysis 1. Summarize what you did in this lab. 2. Explain the purpose of in this lab. 3. Describe the results of in this lab and what they mean. 6

Xacto knife Janis Green B stain Sugar water solution in a beaker Paper towel Water Pencil Paper Eraser Safety Concerns: Chemicals; Xacto knife. Student will wear goggles and gloves when using chemicals. Discuss safe and proper use of Xacto knife. Procedure 1. Make a wet mount slide of celery. a. Cut 1cm piece fresh celery with Xacto knife from outer epidermis and transfer to glass slide with 10% sucrose solution (place a drop of the solution before placing the celery on the slide). b. Stand this section on end on a clean glass slide. c. Make a slice through the celery as close to the outer edge as possible. d. Put this thin sheet, inner side up, on the slide. Cut out the region from between two of the strands of celery. Place a drop of Janus Green B on your sample. e. Put a piece of paper towel on one side of slide, add 2-3 drops of distilled water to other side so stain drawn under coverslip 8

Do the Mystery Samples Contain Life? (a lesson plan from the NASA Astrobiology: Science Learning Activities for Afterschool guide) Materials Three clear containers Sugar Container 1 Container 2 Container 3 Hand lenses Three small sheets of paper Spoon Procedure 1. Observe the mystery samples in the three jars to find out if they contain anything living. You may use all of your senses except taste. Be sure to look closely with the hand lenses. Touch, listen, and smell. Record your observations below. Jar 1 Jar 2 11
Jar 3 2. Get the sugar. Add one teaspoon of sugar to each sample. Do you see any changes to any sample yet (remember, you just added food!)? 3. Add warm water to the mystery samples. Look for changes. (Pour enough water into each jar to just cover the mystery samples). Record any changes you see. 4. Add another teaspoon of sugar to each jar. Does adding more food (sugar) re-start the fizzing in Jar 3? What is happening in Jar 2? 5. Try adding more water to Jar 3. Does that re-start the reaction you saw before? Has your opinion about which jar contains the living thing changed at all? Why or why not? 6. Which samples are living? Jar 1 Yes/No (circle one) Jar 2 Yes/No (circle one) Jar 3 Yes/No (circle one) 12
Explain your choices for each jar. 7. Find out what each jar contained. Were you choices in #6 correct? Why or why not? 8. Explain how you can determine if something is alive. 13
