1 Bisque: Plate, platter or flat bowls fired to cone 04. Colors: EZ 12 Black and CN253 Black CN141 Lt Aqua CN142 Bt Aqua CN172 Bt Kelp CN261 Lt Grape CN293 Dk Purple CN501 Neon Yellow CN502 Neon Blue CN503 Neon Chartreuses CN504 Neon Orange CN505 Neon Green CN506 Neon Coral CN507 Neon Red Brushes and Tools: Variety of rounds, liners and script liners depending on size of butterfly you are working on. Sgrafitto tool or Clean-up tool, sponge, scissors, pencil, red pencil, tape, mylar carbon or saral paper for tracing or white tissue paper, permanent fine point black or red marker, palette, paper towels. Instructions: 1.Wipe off bisque with a slightly damp sponge. Allow to dry. 2.Place proper butterfly pattern over a piece of Mylar (or clay carbon) paper. Trace each butterfly onto appropriate section of the oval platter. Refer to diagram provided NOTE: There are 5 different sized butterfly patterns provided. Refer to location and placement (or angle) of each. Transfer & trace according to each respective location as noted. Be sure to use a red ballpoint pen. This makes the transferring much easier to see When transferring it is not necessary to trace anything but the outline of the wings and body. DO NOT trace the coma strokes within the wings themselves (You will be covering them up and it will be a waste of time) 3.ABOUT THE BRUSHES: Basically you will be using a combination of round and script-liner brushes to complete this technique. When using these brushes, you will be making coma-strokes: - which are very easy to do. You will simply load the brush with color, then stroke the butterfly wings from the tip and pull stroke toward the body using pressure. You will plop the brush down, then gradually pull and lift as you approach the end creating a tapered of tear-drop look. Obviously the larger brushes will make larger bolder strokes, and the more narrow script-liner brushes will make more narrow or tapered strokes. (Refer closely to the colored photo and tracing pattern.) Practice this pressure or comastroke prior to beginning. You will begin by using a large ROUND brush to stroke-in the first layer or base coat of color on the wings. (IE: Yellow). Then you will use a contrasting color (IE: Orange) and a smaller sized SCRIPT brush to layer a smaller sized comma stroke over the previouly applied base coat of color, which was also done with pressure or a comma stroke. Finally you will use a smaller sized Script Liner Brush to once again make a smaller comma-stroke on top of the previous two layers. ALL BUTTERFLIES are done with three layers of color. ie base coat, second layer with contrasting color, then final top comma-stroke of black. 2 4.Double check to insure you have all the details done with Black. Be sure to include the eyes and dots on the butterly wings, antlers, and accents; and be sure to sign your name. 5.Kneed the bottle of FD258 White French Dimensions thoughtly to mix in the water at the top of the bottle. Put FD and CN244 (50:50) on the palette. Mix use the back of a brush and put in the white dots. 6.With a pencil, carefully sketch a border around edge of platter, Keep it at about 1 wide. Or use a CN 142 Bright Aqua and water color wash the background. 7.Dilute some EZ12 with water, apply one coat of this around the edge or platter. (This is done to insure you get a real OPAQUE black border.) 8.Apply 3 good coats of CN253 over the coat of EZ on the edge of platter. (This will eliminate streaking of the Black Concepts.) This procedure is a good one to follow if you donʼt want to apply 3-coats of Concepts. 9.Apply 3 good coatsof CN253 to the back of the platter. Allow to dry between coats. 10.Allow to dry thoughtly 11.Using a large fan brush or soft glaze brush apply two good coats of clear glaze to the entire platter. DO NOT OVER BRUSH the clear glaze. Lay the clear glaze on and do not over brush or you will smear the Black EZ outlining. Allow to dry thoroughtly. 12. Stilt and glaze fire to cone 06.
