I do more painting when I m not painting. It s in the subconscious. ::: Andrew Wyeth ::: Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. ::: Scott Adams ::: Take the attitude of a student, never be too big to ask questions, never know too much to learn something new. ::: Og Mandino ::: O great creator of being grant us one more hour to perform our art and perfect our lives. ::: Jim Morrison :::
2 Ask Ann & Mary Advice Column Updates I want to finish a piece I started in traditional oils with Genesis - is this possible? You can coat your painting with a product called Magic Metallic Matte Sealer. Let this air dry then paint over the sealer. If the surface can take the heat, this sealer will act as a barrier between the oil and the Genesis. My mop gets full of paint but I don t want to clean it while painting as it takes forever to dry - any tips? I always seem to need to reduce or enlarge a line drawing but am so bad at math - what do you do? We use a Proportion Wheel tool. The inside ring is the size you have and the outside ring is the size you want. The little window tells you the amount of the reduction necessary. Just set your copier to the size or tell the print shop. I run my mop through the hand sanitizer ($1 at the Dollar Tree--comparable to Purell and Dial). Takes out all the color and it is dry and ready almost instantly. A tip from Linda McFadden: Here is a tip the neurologist gave me. Do not sit for more than 30 minutes in one position, set a timer he says. Then get up, move around and stretch, neck, arms, legs. The following products mentioned in this column are available online at Magic Mettalic Matte Sealer Signature Line of Mop Brushes Proportion Wheel Need Books, Packets, Genesis Products or Royal Langnickel Brushes for Classes? 4 Kingslan & Gibilisco Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow. -Ralph Waldo Emerson Updated Seminar Information Seminar Philosophy and Content Each seminar is patterned after the Old World Art Academies. The student learns the academic principles and techniques by duplicating the work of the Teacher/Master. The studies or projects are formulated to stress a particular area of study and all teaching and painting is directed toward that end. The student may work in traditional oils, acrylics, or Genesis heat set oils. Ann and Mary teach using traditional oil methods with the Genesis paints. Our Omaha, Nebraska Professional Studio The only prerequisite to study with Ann and Mary is a desire to increase your knowledge and painting skills. While the Decorative Art Level Teaching Seminars are directed toward those wishing to learn how to teach or to improve their teaching methods, it is also excellent for students who wish to learn the Ann Kingslan Method from the very beginning. We are the only studio that can grant students the title of Genesis Authorized Artisan. Take any of our 3-5 day seminars and you will be an Authorized Artisan. Lodging and Meals Our students are housed at newly remodeled hotel, The Park Inn, which is directly across the parking lot from our decorative art studio. Our students receive a highly discounted rate of $70 per night. The hotel has a complimentary breakfast while we provide a full lunch each day. Meet Our Instructors: Lucy Hartman. Lucy has had a life long interest in art and took many classes throughout grade school, high school and college. She began to take classes from Ann Kingslan in 1988 and then to teach at the studio becoming an Ann Kingslan Certified Teacher, and later a Certified Genesis Instructor. She also taught children s classes while living in central Nebraska. Lucy s primary medium is Genesis Heat Set Oils, but she is also proficient in drawing, oils and coloured pencil. She enjoys and has taught many other media as well including collage, watercolour, pastels, stamping and paper arts, acrylics and clay. Shirley Hutchison is an Ann Kingslan Certified Teacher and an award winning authorized Genesis Instructor. She has been teaching painting since Her initial experience was with acrylic paints beginning in She has taken classes from many nationally known artists including Karen Hubbard, Debbie Cole, Audrey Bettin, Janelle Johnson, Jill McFarlane, Janelle Johnson and Carolyn Bacon. Her oil painting experience began with a class taught through the local guild, Omaha Guild of Decorative Artists. From there, she decided to pursue oil painting further. She started taking classes and seminars from Mary Gibilisco and Ann Kingslan, earning the designation of Ann Kingslan Certified Teacher. Shirley continues to take classes to expand her knowledge and experience. Shirley taught acrylic classes classes for many years through Ye Olde Craft Shop and Homespun Keepsakes. After becoming a Kingslan Certified Teacher, she began teaching oil classes using the Genesis Artist Colors. She currently teaches at the Kingslan Gibilisco Decorative Studio. Kathy White I have always been a crafter, but about 11 years ago I was talked into taking an acrylic class with a friend at Homespun keepsakes was hooked! I began teaching at Homespun 5 years ago and from there went to Kingslan & Gibilisco Studio. I continue to take classes when I can from 'big brushes' like Mary Gibilisco, Debbie Cole, Mary Owens, Karen Hubbard and Heidi England. There is always more to learn! I have dabbled in oils but acrylics remain my first love. I enjoy sharing ideas with all of my students and hope that I will someday be able to do more with design My firm belief is that if you could color between the lines in grade school you CAN learn to do decorative painting; it is just a matter of practice, practice, practice. I have been lucky to have a great family that is supportive and allow me time to play in my paint room. I also have 4 wonderful grandchildren who love to play in Grandma's paint room and are a true inspiration because they have no fear of color. Patty Vinal I'm a born and bred Omaha, Nebraskan and love living in this very friendly City. I've been married to my very supportive husband Mike for 33 years this year and raised our 3 boys and adopted 4 girls. Needing an outlet, I found a shop nearby that taught "Tole". Knowing I could never afford to buy the artwork I wanted I signed up for classes. I've been painting since January of 1989, that makes it an official 16 years! I've taught at several shops in Omaha and Colorado as well as my Home Studio for a year before moving back to Omaha. I was fortunate enough to take classes at "The Tole Hut" in Denver for a number of years where I learned Rosemaling and Stroke Roses in Oils. Since moving back I've come to love Genesis paints starting with Shirley Hutchingson's beginning classes. Now I love taking from Mary and Ann as often as possible. I still love painting in Acrylics as well. Strokework in any form is my favorite thing to do. Just about everything can be improved when using strokes, even basecoating. I also believe you can achieve a high level of accomplishment when using the modern mediums now available. I hope I can give as much as I have been given with skill and patience, and am looking forward to teaching again Learning Opportunites

15 Your Free Lesson: How to Paint a Red Rose Preparation The masonite insert panel background is applied with a fine foam roller brush with acrylic DecoArt Russett. Apply three coats of the acrylic then sand lightly with a paper bag. Red Rose To create a vibrant red rose the value scale must progress through the colour wheel. As colours on a value scale become lighter the colour or value must become warmer and brighter as compared to the value below it. As a colour becomes darker on a value scale, the colour becomes duller and cooler as compared to the value above it. Therefore, the values must progress from the medium value of red to red orange, orange, yellow orange in the light values. Then the scale follows the colour wheel in the opposite direction. The scale creates the dark from red violet to violet and finally to blue violet Using the value scale in this manner allows the rose to stay dark red and not become chalky (bleached out in appearance) or muddy (brownish and dull) in the dark areas. If white were added in the light areas, the rose would go pinkish and dull. If black or brown were added to the dark areas, the rose would appear as if it were dying. It is difficult to maintain the clarity of colour when working with a red scale. When the dark values touch the light values, the colour neutralizes as it is blended. Therefore, it is imperative that the values are applied and blended one at a time and in sequence. In other words, do not place all of the values and blend. The same sequence must be respected when layering accents tints and adjustments. Rose Value Scale Medium: R + RS Low Light: R Light: R + Y High Light: Light + Y High Dark: Medium + QC Dark: HD + QC Low Dark: QC + UB Increase lights and darks Light =... Medium = M Dark = //// Low Dark = xxxxx Add tints and accents
16 Morning Glory, Filler Flowers and Wild Roses Create the morning glory and wild roses using the same value scale as the red rose. In order to make these flowers recede away from the center of interest rose, neutralize each of the red values with a small amount of green (complement of red) in each of the values. Use the lower values of the scale to make the flowers recede even more. Background Place the background according to the placement guide below. This should appear as a glow from back behind the main grouping of flowers. Initial value placement Increase lights and darks streak with RV + Black Add tints and accents Leaves Leaves are the support system for the flowers in life as well as in painting. Leaves must never be more vibrant nor more interesting than the flowers. However, leaves should be varied from each other in hue, tone, and value. Artistic license may be taken when coloring leaves as well as designing leaves. Emphasis is given to flowers through contrast in the leaves. Place cool tones close to warm tones; place light values close to dark values. Recede leaves and minimize emphasis by parallel placement; i.e., cool next to cool, warm next to warm, dark next to dark. etc. Use these mixtures in combination. No leaf should be entirely cool; add some warm tones. No leaf should be entirely warm; add some cool tones. Advancing and important leaves will be more vibrant and will show a wider contrast range of values. Receding leaves will be duller and show a closer contrast range of values. Temperature can create contrast. Use warm against warm, and cool against cool in order to recede into the background or connect with the neighboring flower. Use warm against cool in order to pull forward, emphasize or contrast with the neighboring flower, area, or background. The veins, spots, holes, and interesting details may be added after the leaf is dry. Basic or Natural Leaf Scale Mix a value scale of grey using black and white. The scale should range from a value 2 to a value 8 (see chart on page 28).Another option is to use the Genesis Value Scale of Grey. If you mix your own, there should be at least 7 different values. Now add a small amount of Y to each portion to shift the scale to the green side. The lower values should be quieter (duller in intensity) than the lighter portions. Split the value scale into four equal portions. There should now be 28 portions of paint.
17 Warm Leaf Scale To one of the value scales of green, create a warm leaf value scale by adding YO to the lighter values and BU to the darker values. The addition of BU will dull the dark values if they become too bright. If any of the values become too grey, add Y to the pile. Cool Leaf Scale To the third value scale of green, create a cool leaf value scale by adding UB to each pile. If any of the values become too intense with the blue, neutralize with BU. Red or Dull Leaf Scale To the final value scale, create rich browns by adding YO to the lighter values and RV + BU to the darker values. Add R if any the mixes become too intense or bright Add Y if any of the mixes become too dull. Add side and center veins with dark green. Add highlight in the center of the veins wherethey cross over the light area of the leaf. Add tints and accents Initial value placement of a standard leaf (see page 7 for code explanation) Center of Wild Rose Base the center with CY5. Add the dark section with CY3. Add a low dark area with CY2. Add a highlight of CY8. Blend by pouncing so that the center has texture. Finishing of the Cabinet Finish the cabinet by painting the entire cabinet with DecoArt Russett. Antique the cabinet with a mix of RV + Blk. Thin the paint with the Thinning Medium respecting the 40%-60% ratio (review page 4). Increase lights and darks
