2 Angry Blue Bird This pattern is my first in honor of one of the coolest mobile device touch-screen applications ever conceived... Angry Birds by Rovio Mobile. MATERIALS Worsted weight acrylic yarn in blue, white, bright orange, dull orange, and black Fiber fill Beads or beans for stuffing 9mm black plastic safety eyes (optional) Size E (3.5 mm) crochet hook Yarn needle Stitch marker STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS USED IN THIS PATTERN: CH chain stitch SC single crochet HDC half double crochet DECR decrease ST stitch STS stitches MM move marker FO finish off For the project shown in the photographs, I used Red Heart Super Saver Enconomy Yarn. Colors used were: Body: Delft Blue #0885 Eyes: White #0311 Lids: Carrot #0256 Beak: Pumpkin #0254 Tail: Black #0312 Note: When determining whether to use buttons or other small embellishments, keep in mind the age of the intended recipient. Doll eyes and other decorations may pose a choking hazard for children under three. A safer alternative for the very young is to sew eyes and any other decorations using embroidery thread or yarn.

3 PART 1: EYES (MAKE TWO) To begin the eyes, create a half circle. The second round adds to the shell size then works across the bottom of the piece to extend the lower edge. Use white yarn. Round 1: CH 2. 4 SC in second chain from hook. CH 1 and turn. Round 2: 2 SC in each of the STS from round 1. Rotate piece 180 degrees so that the flat sideis facing up and SC 5 STS evenly across the bottom. FO, leaving a tail for sewing. Figure 1: Eyes PART 2: LOWER LIDS (MAKE TWO) The lower lids are made by working a single row. Use dull orange. Row 1: CH 6. Work 1 SC in second CH from hook, HDC in each of the next three STS, and SC in the remaining CH ST. FO, leaving a tail for sewing. TIP: Weave in the short ends using a yarn needle for a clean look. Figure 2: Lower lids PART 3: BEAK Use bright orange yarn and a stitch marker, if needed. Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Round 2: SC in each ST around (6 SC). Round 3: *Work 2 SC in first ST, SC in each of the next two STS. Repeat once from * (8 SC). Round 4: *Work 2 SC in first ST, SC in each of the next three STS. Repeat once from * (10 SC). Round 5: SC in each ST around (10 SC). Round 7: *Work 2 SC in first ST, SC in each of the next four STS. Repeat once from * (12 SC). FO and leave a tail for sewing. Figure 3: Beak

4 PART 4: SMALL FEATHER The small feather is one of two chunky feathers on the blue bird s head. Use blue yarn and a stitch marker, if needed. Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round. Rounds 2-4: SC in each ST around (6 Round 5: *DECR across first two STS, SC in next. Repeat from * once more (4 Round 6: SC in each ST around (4 SC). FO, leaving a tail for sewing. Figure 4: Small feather PART 5: LARGE FEATHER The large feather is one of two chunky feathers on the blue bird s head. Use blue yarn and a stitch marker, if needed. Round 1: CH 2. 8 SC in second chain from hook. Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round. Rounds 2-5: SC in each ST around (8 Round 6: *DECR across first two STS, SC in each of the next two STS. Repeat from * once more (6 Round 7: SC in each ST around (6 Round 8: *DECR across first two STS, SC in next. Repeat from * once more (4 SC). FO, leaving a tail for sewing. Figure 5: Large feather PART 6: TAIL FEATHERS (MAKE TWO) The tail feathers are made from a simple row of single crochet stitches. The trick to making them look nice is weaving in your ends neatly! Use black yarn. Row 1: CH 6. HDC in third ST from hook and in next. SC in each of the two remaining STS. FO, leaving a tail for sewing. Figure 6: Tail feathers

5 PART 7: BODY The blue bird s body is worked from the top down. It is made in a spiral with blue yarn. Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round. Round 2: 2 SC in each ST around (12 Round 3: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in next. Repeat from * around (18 Round 4: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next two STS. Repeat from * around (24 Round 5: SC in each ST around (24 Round 6: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next three STS. Repeat from * around (30 Round 7: SC in each ST around (30 Round 8: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next four STS. Repeat from * around (36 Rounds 9-11: SC in each ST around (36 Round 12: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next five STS. Repeat from * around (42 Round 13: SC in each ST around (42 Round 14: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next five STS. Repeat from * around (36 Round 15: SC in each ST around (36 Note: Stop at this point to work on preliminary assembly. You do not have to finish off or cut the yarn, but be careful while sewing so as not to sew your working yarn to the inside of the blue bird. That might make him mad... and we wouldn t want that now, would we? PART 8: PRELIMINARY ASSEMBLY 1. Attach the eyes with the top of the white arches sitting roughly at the base of round 5 and use the tails from the pieces to stitch in place. 2. Sew the lower lids in place just below the eyes (see Figure 7). 3. Using a small amount of fiber fill or yarn scraps, place a pinch of stuffing into the beak. Sew the beak in place so that it overlaps the lower lids (see cover image for refrence). Continued, next page. Figure 7: Eye and lid placement

6 4. Fill the top of the head with fiber fill (to roughly round 9). Then add weight to your angry bird by adding beads on top of the fiber fill (see Figure 8). To keep the beads in place while you are finishing the body, place a bit of fiber fill on top. Figure 8: Beads on top of fiber fill PART 9: FINISHING THE BODY Round 16: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next four STS. Repeat from * around (30 Round 17: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next three STS. Repeat from * around (24 Round 18: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next two STS. Repeat from * around (18 Round 19: *DECR across first two STS. SC in next ST. Repeat from * around (12 Round 20: DECR around (6 SC). FO, leaving tail to gather remaining STS. PART 10: FINAL TOUCHES 1. Stitch the tail feathers in place on the back of the bird. 2. Attach the smaller blue feather to the top of the head near the back edge of round Attach the larger blue feather to the top of the head near the front edge of round 1 so that it lays on top of the smaller feather. 4.
