a Newborn Flower Deer Hat and white tail pants. a An original pattern designed by Amber Poff Written in American Terminology 1
Tools needed: 5 mm hook 4 mm hook Stitch markers Sewing needle Scissors Medium weight yarn in your color choices, I used Caron simply soft. Brown Green Beige White Soft pink Cream Orange/ red This entire pattern, and most of the embellishments will be done in the 5 mm hook. Only the horns, and one of the petal flowers will done with the 4 MM hook. This is not necessary and varies widely on personal preference. Keep in mind, that you can obtain a smaller or larger piece by changing the size of your hook. This applies to all patterns. 2
Stitch Guide Ch. Chain Slst slip stitch SC single crochet HDC half double crochet FPDC- Front post double crochet TR Treble crochet MR Magic ring Pants Chain 62 To start: DC in 2nd Ch from the hook. in each St across. Join with a sl st to the first DC (60) You will work in the round from here on out (Round 1-7). Ch. 2, in each stitch, join with a sl st to the first DC (60) (Round 8) Skip 30 stitches, sl st into the 30th stitch, ch 2, Dc in same st and each of the next 29 stitches, join with a sl st to first DC made (30) From this point on, you will work continuous rounds (Round 9-20) DC around (30) Round 21 Ch DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC, Sl St tie off and weave in ends (30) 3
2nd leg ((Be sure to use a stitch marker to keep track of how many rounds you have done)) **worked in continuous rounds** [round 1 ] In the first open st, join yarn, be sure to leave a slightly longer tail and ch.2, DC in same stitch, 29 DC. Do NOT join with a SLST. (30 DC) Note: Do not worry about the small gaps made between the legs, we will fix that later. [round 2-11] DC in each stitch (30 DC) [Round 12] ch.2, 27 DC, 1 HDC, 1 SC, sl st and tie off. weave in ends Ribbed Waist Turn your work so the seam facing you. Join yarn in the first stitch left of the seam Ch. 2, DC in same st, 59 DC, sl st to first DC (60) [round 2] ch.2 DC in same st, * 1 FPDC, * Repeat from *to* all the way around. Join with a sl st to first DC. [Round 3] ch.2 DC in same St, *1 FPDC, 1DC* Repeat from ** all the way around. Join with a sl st to the first DC. Cut yarn and tie off. Pants should measure Approximately: 7 inches (across the waist) 5.5 inches (waist to crotch) 11 inches (Waist to ankle) 4
Ribbed Edging (Round 1) With the seam of the pants facing you, Join yarn to the left stitch of the seam. Ch.2 and DC into same st. * FPDC into next stitch, DC into next stitch* *to* all the way around. (30 FPDC, 30 DC) Slst into the first DC made (Round 2-3) Ch. 2, Dc in same st *FPDC in previous FPDC, DC in next* repeat *to* around. At the end of 3 rd round, sl st to first DC made, fasten off and weave in ends. Tail (this portion of the pattern reads every line is the next stitch, work down one side, turn and then work down the opposite side) Ch. 11 In 2 nd ch. From the hook sc 2 sc 1 HDC 4 TR 5 TR in the last stitch (working along the other side of the chain) 4 tr 1 HDC 2 SC Slst into 1 st SC Ch. 2 2 sl st 5 SC 2 HDC into next 10 stitches 5 SC 5
Slst into last St Fasten off, and leave a long tail for sewing Make a second tail using White. I used a fluffy yarn for the white portion of the tail. It was difficult to work with, but gave it a very nice, realistic looking detail. A tester pointed out that she used the loop stitch for the white part and also had good results. Be creative with this part to add your own twist. Attach the white to the brown tail by sewing along the inside of the stitches. When you re finished, weave the white into the white, and hide the tail between the brown and white so it doesn t show on the brown part. Assembling, and weaving ends in: I had mentioned the gaps in the crotch area, when you go to weave your ends in, use the tail you made from creating the second leg, to stitch around the small gaps made, then weave in the end as you usually would to the inside of the pants. When attaching the tail: On the brown part of the tail, I attached with the tails left over from the brown. Hat [Round 1] Magic ring, ch. 2 [Round 2] 1 in center of ring, sl st to first DC, pull tail tight to close circle [Round 3] Ch. 2, 2 DC into each st, sl st to join [Round 4] Ch. 2, *2 DC in first stitch, 1 Dc in the next* repeat *to* around. Join with a slst to the first DC [Round 5} Ch. 2, *2 DC in first stitch, in next 2 stitches* repeat *to*. Join with a slst to the first DC [Round 6-12] in each stitch, join with a slst to first DC. On the last round, Fasten off and weave ends in 6
Ear (make 2)**** No joins in the ears, they will be made in the continuous rounds. A stitch marker may be helpful in keeping track of where to start and end rounds.*** Magic Ring, ch. 1 [ Round 1 ] 5 sc into middle of the ring, put your hook into the first SC made and pull tail to close the ring (5) [ Round 2 ] 1 sc in each stitch (5) [ Round 3 ] 2 sc into each stitch (10) [ Round 4 ] sc into each stitch (10) [ Round 5 ] *2 sc in first st, sc in next* repeat from *to* around (15) [Round 6-11 ] 1 Sc in each stitch. On the last round sl st to the first sc made, fasten off leave a long tail for sewing. Attaching the ear Flatten out the ear, fold the corners of the open edge together, sew together using last row of stitches. Lay your hat flat, from the starting point count four rows down, and sew ears on, weaving ends to the inside of the hat so they are not seen. Horns (make 2) I used a 4 MM hook for the horns to keep gaps small, the size you use is personally preference *** When I m working with a small amount of stitches in the round, I find it easier to count exactly how many stitches I need instead of using a stitch marker. For example; here I would just count each stitch made until I get to 30. Markers tend to slow me down, and get in the way. However, if you are easily distracted, then by all means, use some kind of a stitch marker. If you must use a marker, you can use a piece of 7
yarn, instead of a plastic marker, so it doesn t make it awkward to stitch around, it is going to be small round to work with. Magic Ring, ch 1 [Round 1] sc 5 into center of the ring, put your hook through the first sc made and pull lightly to close the tail. Avoid doing this too tight or it makes the stitches hard to work into. [Round 2-6 ] sc into each stitch (5) Leave a long tail for sewing in. The horn should be small enough that you don t have to stuff it. I just tucked the starting tail in once I had made 3 rounds, or 15 stitches. Attaching Horns Find the center of your hat again, count over 1 round, line up the horns so they are matched up with the placement of yours ears. Sew them on using your tail. Weave onto the inside of the hat. Petal Flowers (make 2) If you would like one flower to be slightly bigger or smaller, go up or down in size with your hook Ch. 28 In 2 nd chain from the hook *5 DC, slst into the next*. (large petal made) Repeat from *to* four more times to have a total of (5 large petals) *5 HDC into next stitch, slst into next*, (medium petal made) repeat from *to* three more times to have a total of (4 medium petals) *5 sc in next stitch, slst into next*, (small petal made) repeat *to* three more times to have a total of ( 4 small petals) Fasten off, and pull tail through, Leave a long tail to sew flower together and then to sew onto hat. 8
Bud Flower Ch. 15 In 2 nd ch from the hook 2 DC. 2 DC into each stitch across. Fasten off, leave a long tail for securing flower, and sewing onto hat Leaf (Make 2) (leaves are made in the same way the tail was made, working down the chain, then turning, working the stitches on the opposite side) Ch. 9 Sc in 2 nd ch from the hook 1 sc 1 HDC 1 TR 5 sc into last stitch (turn work, and work down the opposite side now) 1 Dc 1 TR 1 HDC 1 SC Slst ROUND TWO SC 9 9
Ch. 2, sl st into 2 nd ch from hook Sc 9 Slst into previous slst, leave a long tail for sewing. Attaching flowers and leaves There is no right way to attach flowers and leaves. This is all personal preference. I suggest placing your flowers and leaves on the hat first, to see what looks best. I start with the leaves to give a more layered look to them. I sew around the inside edge of the stitches and secure to the inside of the hat, weaving my ends in. With the bud flower, you will roll it up to form the bud look, secure along the unworked loops of the beginning chain to keep it together, then attach by sewing. Your petal flower should already be taking shape, curling up a bit, once you re finished making it, sew along the unworked loops of the chain to keep the flower securely together. This isn t necessary, but I find it gives it a nice, finished look and helps keep it together. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.
