2 Angry Birds Pig This pattern is my first in honor of one of the coolest mobile device touch-screen applications ever conceived... Angry Birds by Rovio Mobile. MATERIALS Worsted weight acrylic yarn in green, white, and black Fiber fill Beads or beans for stuffing 9mm black plastic safety eyes (optional) Small amount black felt (for nostrils) Size E (3.5 mm) crochet hook Yarn needle Stitch marker STITCHES AND ABBREVIATIONS USED IN THIS PATTERN: CH chain stitch SC single crochet HDC half double crochet SL slip stitch DECR decrease ST stitch STS stitches MM move marker FO finish off For the project shown in the photographs, I used Red Heart Classic Yarn. Note: When determining whether to use buttons or other small embellishments, keep in mind the age of the intended recipient. Doll eyes and other decorations may pose a choking hazard for children under three. A safer alternative for the very young is to sew eyes and any other decorations using embroidery thread or yarn.

3 PART 1: EYES (MAKE TWO) The eyes are made in circular rounds that are joined with a slip stitch (SL) to make an even transition. Use white yarn. Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Join with SL to first SC. CH 1. Round 2: 2 SC in each ST around. Join with SL to first SC. FO, leaving a tail for sewing. Figure 1: Eyes PART 2: EARS (MAKE TWO) The ears are made in a spiral using the same green yarn that will make up your pig s body. Because the ears are made in a spiral, you may want to use a stitch marker to kep track of your rounds. Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round. Round 2: 2 SC in each ST around (12 Round 3-4: SC in each ST around (12 Round 5: SC in each ST around (12 SC) FO, leaving a tail for sewing. To shape ears, pinch together at the base (round 5). This will create a small indent. Figure 2: Ears PART 3: SNOUT The snout starts with four chain stitches. By working in both sides of the stitches, you will form an oval base. As with the ears, the snout uses green yarn and is worked in a spiral. You may want to use a stitch marker to keep track of your round. Round 1: CH 2. 2 SC in second CH from hook, SC in next and then work 4 SC in the remaining CH ST. Rotate work 180 degrees so that the opposite loops of the chain now face top. SC in next ST and work 2 SC in the final ST (10 SC). Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round. Round 2: *Work 2 SC in first ST, then 1 SC in each of the next three STS. Work 2 SC in next ST. Repeat once from * (14 Figure 3: Snout Round 3: *Work 2 SC in each of the first two STS, then 1 SC in each of the next three STS. Work 2 SC in each of the next two STS. 4 Round 4: Working in outside loops, SC in each ST around (22 SC). MM. Round 5: SC in each ST around (22 SC). FO, leaving a tail for sewing. To finish the snout: 1. Cut two small circles from black felt (hint: the snout looks more authentic if the circles are slightly different sizes). 2. Glue circles to the snout with craft glue and allow to dry (see Figure 4). Figure 4: Finishing snout PART 4: LOWER LIP The lower lip is two simple rows of stitches. Row 2 uses slip stitches (SL) half double crochet (HDC) stitches in the center to help the lip hang down a little. Row 1: CH 8. SC in second CH from hook and in each ST across (7 SC). CH 1 and turn. Row 2: SL in each of the first two STS. Work 1 HDC in each of the three middle STS and SL in the remaining two STS. FO, leaving a tail for sewing. Figure 5: Lower lip PART 5: BODY The pig s body is a little flatter on the bottom to allow it to sit better. It is made in a spiral with green yarn. Round 1: CH 2. 6 SC in second chain from hook. Place stitch marker in the last SC to mark the end of the round. Round 2: 2 SC in each ST around (12 Round 3: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in next. Repeat from * around (18 Round 4: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next two STS. Repeat from * around (24 Round 5: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next three STS. Repeat from * around (30 Round 6: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next four STS. Repeat from * around (36 Round 7: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next five STS. Repeat from * around (42 Round 8: *2 SC in first SC, 1 SC in each of next six STS. Repeat from * around (48 Rounds 9-11: SC in each ST around (48

Repeat from * around (60 Rounds 16-17: SC in each ST around (60 Round 18: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next eight STS. Repeat from * around (48 Rounds 21-22: SC in each ST around (48 Round 23: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next six STS. Repeat from * around (42 Round 24: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next five STS. Repeat from * around (36 Round 25: SC in each ST around (36 Round 26: *DECR across first two STS. SC in each of the next four STS. Repeat from * around (30 Note: Stop at this point to work on preliminary assembly. You do not have to finish off or cut the yarn, but be careful while sewing so as not to sew your working yarn to the inside of the pig. That might make him mad... and we wouldn t want that now, would we? PART 6: PRELIMINARY ASSEMBLY 1. Stitch the lower lip in place about 3/4 inch (a little less than 2 cm) up from where the chin of the pig will sit flush on a table. See Figure 6 for reference. 2. Place the snout so that the bottom half of this piece covers the seam where the lower lip attaches to the pig s head (see Figure 6). Stitch about halfway around the snout, then add a pinch of fiber fill (NOT TOO MUCH!) to give it shape. Finish stitching around and knot yarn. Figure 6: Snout and lip placement

6 3. Attach the eyes. If using plastic safety eyes, push the shaft through both the white crocheted piece and the green portion of the body. Sew around the outside of the eyes witht the tail left over from crocheting. See Figure Using a piece of black yarn, stitch eye brows above each eye. Refer to cover image for shape and placement. 5. Stuff your pig. I used surplus beads along with fiber fill to give my pig a little heft (see Figure 8) but you could use beans or just plain fluff if you want a softer bird. 6. Continue with Part 7.
