Category: Pieced Large: Perimeter of 340 or more Medium: Perimeter of Small: Perimeter of less than 180 What is a Pieced Quilt? A pieced quilt is generally what we all think about when we think of quilts. It is where it all begins for many of us. In competition, or for exhibition, a pieced quilt is referred to as 2 pieces of fabric cut into any shape and sewn together to complete a quilt top, with no addition of applique. Mixed Technique Large: Perimeter of 340 or more Medium: Perimeter of Small: Perimeter of less than 180 What is a Mixed Technique Quilt? A Mixed Technique quilt is a work that combines multiple techniques into one quilt with the piecing being the primary technique and any other techniques comprising less than 50% of the quilts surface. Applique: Large: Perimeter of 312 or more Med./ Small: Perimeter of less than 312 What is an Appliqued Quilt? An Appliqued Quilt begins its life usually with some form of piecing beneath appliqued areas. In competition, or for exhibition, an Appliqued Quilt is referred to as a quilt with over 50% of its surface containing applique. A small amount of piecing can be included, but it should speak to the viewer as an applique work. Group Quilt Made by more than 2 people Any size Any technique

2 What is a Group Quilt? A group quilt is made by more than 2 people. This category allows for any technique and any size. The delineating factor is how many have worked on the piece. If you have: One or more sews; One or more appliques; And a machine quilter.. You have a group quilt. Challenge Quilt The 2015 Theme is CELEBRATE Please take note: Perimeter is to be not more than 120 Must be totally made by the entrant Must contain the color Emerald Green in celebration of the 20 th Anniversary of the BCQS quilt show there is no requirement on how much Emerald Green should be used, only that the color be present The quilter may choose any topic to celebrate Within the description of the quilt, the entrant should explain what they are celebrating and how the quilt represents that. The quilt will be judged: First on representation of the Challenge Second on workmanship Youth Quilt Entrant must be age 18 or younger Top must be constructed by youth What is a Youth Quilt? The youth category for the BCQS is to showcase our area youth and their creations. Anyone who is 18 or younger may enter their pieces into the show for viewing. Area youth that participate can be active in other programs such as 4-H, Art Partners, Homeschooling classes or mentored by an adult quilter. Modern Quilt Any size, Any technique

3 What is a Modern Quilt? Modern Quilts is the newest category for the BCQS. According to the Modern Quilt Guild, a modern quilt includes but is not limited to the following characteristics: Uses bold colors and prints High contrast Graphic areas of solid color Improvisational piecing Minimalism Expansive negative space Alternate grid work To learn more about modern quilting or to find a guild, visit What about Embellishments? Paint Zippers Beading Prairie Point Embroidery (of less than 50%, hand or machine) Cording Trapunto Dimensional All of these techniques are considered embellishments and do not change the category in which you enter your quilt. 4 Viewer s Choice Youth Best Machine Quilting-Non Professional Best Machine Quilting-Professional Quilted by any who quilts for means of gain This can also apply to quilting on a domestic machine, when services are hired Best Computer Aided Quilting Professional Quilted by any who quilts for means of gain Please note: The machine quilter should determine and inform entrant of percentage of computer aided quilting applied to the quilt. Percentage of this category should be 50% CAQ or more Best Computer Aided Quilting-Non Professional Other Things to Consider Binding -- What are judges looking for? A binding that is well padded, meaning the batting extends fully to the edge of the batting with no missing edges. All corners are treated equally No extreme points or sags around point A hand finish is always a good idea and stitches should be even in size and placement Outside edge should be straight with no waving, rolling, twisting Binding, and quilt should lay flat Hanging Sleeves Why do I have to add a sleeve? A sleeve makes display of your quilt easier for the set up crew Allows every quilt to be seen to the fullest Helps protect your quilt from possible damage Please see #4 of the BCQS General Rules to ensure accurate size and placement of sleeve Is the sleeve construction also judged? Sleeve construction is not judged, however, Stitching to attach the sleeve should not be visible on the front side of the quilt

5 Accurate Categorization of your quilt Why do I need to do this? Why should I enter my quilt? This is a very important aspect of entering a quilt for judging. If your quilt is in the wrong category, and the judge has already judged the category your quilt should have been placed in, the judge CANNOT go back and re-judge the correct category with your quilt included. Your quilt will have missed out on an opportunity for award. Opportunity for both judged and non-judged display Judging provides opportunity for non-biased assessment of work and suggestions for areas of improvement Judging of a quilt, and winning of an award begins your quilting resume that should accompany any quilt going to an appraiser, which increases your quilts value Show Etiquette Quilts should be well groomed Without evidence of dirt on body of quilt Free of stains or tear/s Free of animal hair Free of loose thread and/or fabric snippets Free of odors, i.e. smoke, cooking, perfume When viewing a quilt, it is NOT proper to touch the quilt Thank you for allowing the BCQS to present this information to you, our fellow quilters.
