3 Workshop-General Guidelines on Entering Quilts in Competition 1. Know what you are getting into! Quilt Rule Section review 3. Entry Form review (online or printout) 4. Search for information on the internet-- amazon.com, quilting websites 5. Don't be so hard on yourself! a. The judges don't know you so don't take it personally! b. Don't read the comments until you are ready. c. Go back and read the comments again later when you can be more objective. d. Know that next year you will do better because you know what to expect! 6. This WILL build your confidence!

4 Workshop 1--General overall pointers 1. What Judges judge on! General appearance (20%) Quilting Stitch (20%) Finishing (15%) Level of difficulty (20%) Workmanship of piecing or applique (25%) 2. What they look for! Color play! Make it sparkle! Appropriate quilting motifs, even quilting density Seams that meet, thread tension is good, dark fabrics or threads don't show through the lighter fabrics Full binding that shows the same amount on back and front Make a good first impression. Make it eye catching! Make them want to take a second look! WOW factor! Make it your own! Do something different to enhance it! Clean, odor free, no pet hair, threads or stains. Label it well! Make it hard to remove the label to deter theft. Make sure your quilt is square (before it is quilted) and hangs straight. AND HAVE FUN!

5 Work toward an orderly quilt! Set seams first, then open and iron to one side, then press open if needed. Make sure seams are ironed open with no pleats. Don't "un-iron" seams you have already pressed when ironing new seams. Try to reduce bulk in the seams. Four Patch Kaleidoscope points Half-square triangles Clip threads as you go. Be careful not to let dark threads get onto light areas of the quilt top and show through. Make sure all borders are the same width. Audition fabrics before actually using them to make sure they look appropriate. Don't be afraid to change your quilt design as you go. You may find that the colors you have chosen for borders or bindings may not be the best pick for the quilt after all. Use only good quality materials. Use a busy backing to mask quilting irregularities, or a solid backing to show your skills! Add bling! Trapunto (faux trapunto looks great and is less work), applique (don't get too ambitious if it is your first try at it), embroidery (don't go too heavy if this is a quilt to use), piping, or couching can all add depth.
