1 G O U R M E T Q U I L T E R C O Announcing the new on-line mystery quilt That Chain Reaction Quilt M because quilting is delicious! Here is a little treat for you, a mystery quilt which would look great in a variety of colours, particularly quite strong colours as I have used, but you are all so good at choosing colours you may have some very different ideas! This is meant to be a fun project and will run over six months There will also be a video to help encourage you with your mystery, please check on my blog - look for mystery videos The quilt will look fabulous draped over the couch or on the wall for a little extra decor, or just to use for a much needed nap! This is a pieced quilt, some of the pieces are quite small but manageable When you choose your fabrics I suggest you choose a main colour and then find the other colours that will contrast with it, and with themselves It would look terrific in hand-dyes, marbles etc, this quilt relies on colour and contrast for effect! If you are wanting to use similar fabrics to those I have used, we have some in the shop Let me know if I can help with these things How it works: I will post the new parts (hopefully) on the 1st of each month, starting in March 13 and finishing in August 13, as the new part comes up, the previous part will come down and will then be available to purchase The pattern is available free on-line during the specified time, but I would ask that you do not distribute it or copy it without my permission, please However, please do tell all your friends so they can join in the fun If you have missed some parts then you will be able to purchase them for US$3 per part I would love to hear from you as to how you are getting on with it, and would love to see some pictures when you have finished it This idea has worked so well over the last couple of years that I thought it would be fun to do another mystery! 2 G O U R M E T Q U I L T E R C O M because quilting is delicious! mystery quilt requirements That Chain Reaction Quilt I have used some delicious rich coloured fabrics for this quilt, but of course you can use your own choices This is a pieced quilt, some pieces are quite small but manageable When choosing the fabrics I suggest you choose different colours that will contrast well with a main colour and with themselves I have used a light main colour I have suggested a fat 1/8 for most of the colours, generally this means you only need a small amount, it isn t essential that it be exactly a fat 1/8 Requirements: For a quilt approximately 60 square Fourteen contrasting colours have been used plus a main colour, which will be enough for the quilt top, including binding Main colour Z - light grey (25m) 2 3/4 yards A - rust fat 1/8 B - dark grey fat 1/8 C - blue fat 1/8 D - orange fat 1/8 E - jade fat 1/8 F - dark blue fat 1/8 G dark green fat 1/8 H - lime green fat 1/8 J - mid green fat 1/8 K - brown fat 1/8 L - grey fat 1/8 M - yellow fat 1/8 N - red (40cm) 1/2 yard - also used in border O - stripe (70cm) 3/4 yard - used in border & binding Batting - approx 68 square Backing - approx 68 square 2013 wwwgourmetquiltercom

That Chain Reaction Quilt - mystery quilt Part 1 s used in Part 1: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, J, K, L, M, N and Main Z Cutting for Part 1: (¼ seam allowance included in cutting measurements) From each of the 13 fabrics, A - N, cut : 1 x 3 strip across width of fabric cut this into 2 x 3 squares 1 x 2½ square 1 x 1½ square (this is for your fabric code page) From the Main Z, cut : 2 x 3 strips across width of fabric cut this into 26 x 3 squares cut : 4 x 2½ strips across width of fabric cut this into 52 x 2½ squares Note: Included in this pattern is a Code page set out so that you can stick a small square of each fabric on to it so that you can easily follow the pattern with your fabric, using the corresponding letter tag It is a good idea to do this as it will save confusion later when the fabrics are referred to by the letter and it allows you to use your own colours All cut out and ready to sew! 2013 wwwgourmetquiltercom

That Chain Reaction Quilt - Part 1 - continued Part 1 instructions: make a total of 52 half square triangle units: Make 4 half square triangle units from each of the 13 fabrics, A - N with Main Z: Using the 4 of each of the colours x 3 squares and the 26 x Main Z x 3 squares: Step 1: On the back of the Z squares, draw a line from A to B (step 1) A Step 1 Step 2: Lay two squares ( Z and F ) right sides together, and stitch 1/4 away from the drawn line, on each side of the line (step 2) Step 3: Cut all the squares in half along the drawn line (step 3) Step 4: Open out the square and press the seam towards the coloured triangle Now trim the squares to measure 2½ square Step 2 Step 3 Step 4 Unit A B Make a total of 52 of these, set them aside to be used later Note please read before beginning: All seams are ¼ and are included in the cutting measurements When sewing a ¼ seam it is good to be accurate, in fact it is probably helpful to stitch ever so slightly less than ¼ away from the edge of the fabric (this is called a scant ¼ ) because when you press your seams some fabric is taken up as it folds open Take time to work out on your sewing machine where you best achieve ¼ and if necessary mark your machine with a piece of masking tape Some sewing machines have a ¼ foot, however it is still important to check that the stitching is ¼ away from the edge of the fabric All finished for this month, set the pieced squares and the remaining cut out squares aside to be used at a later date 2013 wwwgourmetquiltercom
