1 July August2017 A Place to Learn, Share & Be Creative Christmas in July Challenge... Our classes in July will all be focused on learning to make Christmas décor or gifts you can give to your friends and loved ones this Christmas. July is a great time to get started because once fall arrives, it seems that Christmas is just around the corner. So get started during the lazy days of summer and you ll be amazed at how your holiday season will be so much more relaxed! To make it more fun, we re having a Christmas in July Challenge. This challenge is to make 4 gifts for Christmas during the month of July...that s only 1 gift each week. Turn in a list of the 4 gifts you are striving to make (using The Yarn Haven yarns of course) at the beginning of the month. Bring in your 4 completed projects before Tuesday, August 1 and be entered into a drawing for our Christmas in July prize. When school starts in August, you ll already be on your way to having some of your gifts ready for Christmas. I-75 Yarn Crawl... We re joining the I-75 Yarn Crawl this year. Dates are August This crawl will take you through 4 states...all the way from Michigan, to Ohio, to Kentucky, to Tennessee...57 yarn shops!! So if you can t join us for our East TN Yarn Crawl in June, maybe the I-75 Yarn Crawl in August will entice you. It s a chance to see what is new for the 2017 fall season at each shop and another chance to win some prizes. You could win a prize for visiting all 5 of the TN shops, all 12 of the KY shops, all 21 of the OH shops or all 19 of the MI shops. OR you could win a prize for visiting all of the shops in KY AND TN...or the 4 x 4 Award for visiting 4 shops in each of the 4 states...or visiting all of the Farms...or visiting 5, 10, 20 or 25 shops. Lots of chances to win prizes! For information, go to Passports are $5.00 and are bought online and then picked up at the yarn shop of your choice. (I do have 5 passports at the shop to sell.) A Trunk Show is Coming... From July 31 August 19 we will have a trunk show here at the shop featuring Berroco Modern Cotton and Modern Cotton DK yarns. There will be lots of models to see and new colors as well. Don t let the word cotton in the name make you think it s only a summer yarn. With our mild seasons, it s an all-weather yarn for us here in East TN...especially with it being a cotton/rayon blend. Come check it out!

2 Fiber Friends For the months of July September we will be making breast prosthesis for breast cancer patients. There are both a knitted and crocheted pattern on the charity project page of our website. Please use the softest, non-wool, machine-washable DK yarn that you can afford. We need ALL sizes (A, B, C, D & DD). Make one or a pair and help us support the women in our community who have dealt with breast cancer. Blocking and Felting? Many times we have heard folks say that they can t felt their project because they have a front-loading washer. Or they know their garment should be blocked, but they are scared to do it. Blocking will smooth out any wrinkles, stretch garment out to the correct size, relax the stitches so they are all more uniform and make the garment look and fit better. We can provide these services for you. Just bring your projects to us for felting or blocking. Cost is $10 per item. (If there are several items for the same project that need blocking, cost will be a total of $15.) Weekly Classes... We have Weekly Classes mornings, afternoons, and on the evenings we are open. Mimi s classes are for knitters & Kelora s classes are for knitters OR crocheters. If you need help with a project or just want to start a new project with someone giving you help each step along the way, then come join one of our Weekly Classes. Classes are $12.50/class, but if you sign up for a block of classes before the month begins, you get a discounted price of $10.00/class. Be sure to call the shop to make sure we have room in the class for you to join us. 4 CLASSES (All supplies must be purchased at The Yarn Haven) Learn to Knit - 4 hours (Cost: $40) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Mondays, July 17 & 24 (10 am Noon) Saturday, August 5 & 12 (10 am Noon) For beginners or those needing a refresher course. We will cover how to cast on, knit, purl, increase, decrease, & bind off. Supplies: 1 skein of TYH Cotton yarn & size 7-24 circular needles. Learn to Crochet - 4 hours (Cost: $40) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Thursdays, July 13 & 20 (10 am Noon) Saturday, August 5 & 19 (1-3 pm) For beginners or those needing a refresher course. You will make a dishcloth by learning how to begin with a chain stitch, do single, half double, double & triple crochet stitches, and then fasten off. You ll also do a 2nd dishcloth and learn how to crochet in the round. Supplies: 1 skein of TYH Cotton yarn, size G or H crochet hook & locking stitch marker. Learn to Spin - 3 hours (Cost: $40) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Call and arrange a time with Kelora for your class. Come learn how to spin on a wheel. If you don t have a wheel, we ll let you borrow one of ours. If you want to use your own wheel, it must be complete and in good working order (no antique wheels please). We will cover all the parts of the wheel, how to treadle, how to draft, and how to ply. By the end of the class you should have a small ball of yarn you have spun up yourself and plied. Supplies: included Learn to Weave - 5 hours (Cost: $50) Instructor: Roz Yenzer Saturdays, July 15 (10 am 1 pm) & August 19 (10 am Noon) Come learn how to weave on a rigid heddle loom. You will learn about yarns to use, weaving terms, how to warp and weft the loom, how to end your project, and how to set up your loom with different patterns. You will make a scarf in this class. Supplies: 2 different colors of Cascade 220 superwash yarn. ********************************************************************************************** Oops! 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Saturday, July 1 (10 am Noon) Saturday, August 26 (10 am Noon) Take control of your knitting by learning how to see your mistakes and fix them. Learn how to read your work, pick up dropped stitches, rip back, and put things back together. Homework: work a 4 x 4 swatch in stockinette stitch without binding off. Supplies: homework swatch, yarn & needles in size used for swatch & tapestry needle. Christmas Stockings 6 hours (Cost: $55) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Saturdays, July 1, 8 & 15 (1-3 pm) Pick one of 4 designs and learn 2-color cast-on, knitted braid, 2-color stranded knitting, weaving in ends as you work, jogless jog, sock shaping & kitchener stitch. We will make a small sample stocking in this class so that you learn all of the techniques needed to make the larger stockings. Supplies: 4 colors of Plymouth Galway yarn, size 6 & 8 needles, size 8 double-pointed needles, & darning needle. Fingerless Mitts 4 hours (Cost: $40) Instructor: Sandy Gray Saturdays, July 1 & 8 (1-3 pm) These fingerless mitts make great gifts...and are really a simple lacy pattern. There is also a matching tam pattern. Come learn how to use double-pointed needles to make a lovely set of fingerless mitts out of a soft, yummy yarn that feels like cashmere! Watch out though! You ll want to make a set for yourself as well! Supplies: 1 skein of Berroco Summer Silk, size 6 dpns, & stitch marker.

5 CLASSES (All supplies must be purchased at The Yarn Haven) Crochet Snowflakes- 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Thursday, July 6 (10 am Noon) Friday, August 18 (10 am Noon) Christmas will be here before we know it! Would you like to learn how to make a quick gift adornment or a decoration for your tree? These snowflakes crochet up fast. With a little starch and a ribbon they will look beautiful in any setting. The covered Christmas ball is worked over a clear glass or plastic ornament (not provided). Bring one with you to class if desired. Supplies: 1 ball Lizbeth #10 cotton, or Prescenia #5 cotton, clear ornament (if desired), & 2mm crochet hook or one close to that size. Gauge is not important. Learning Cables- 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Friday, July 7 (10 am Noon) Knitting cables looks so complicated and intimidating. In this workshop the mystique of cables will be unraveled! Students will begin a scarf with a pattern that includes reading a cable chart as well as written instructions. Supples: 2 skeins of Mirasol Nuna yarn, a size 6 needle, a cable needle, & stitch markers. Basic Brioche - 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Saturday, July 8 (10 am Noon) Come learn the beginning techniques of this fascinating garter stitch-based (read: no purling!) reversible knit. There are so many lovely ways to use this stitch, but it s important to learn the basics first. Homework: cast on 27 sts. Rows 1-6: Knit until 1 stitch remains, sl 1 wyif. Supples: 1 skein cotton classic, size 5 or 6 needle, stitch markers, waste yarn & tapestry needle. Santa Pillow 3 hours (Cost: $45) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Monday, July 10 (10 am 1 pm) This charming and diminutive pillow packs a punch on learning how to do intarsia knitting. With only 38 stitches in a row, this little gem will fly off your needles and into your holiday decoratin. You will learn how to work the color changes, manage multiple balls of yarn and weave in your ends for a perfect result. Supplies: size 6-32 circular needle & tapestry needle. Pattern and materials kit (excluding pillow form) included in class fee. Knitted Snowflakes- 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Monday, July 10 (10 am Noon) Thursday, August 10 (10 am Noon) Why should crocheters have all the fun making things to decorate the house for Christmas? These little snowflakes knit up quickly and with a little starch are ready to decorate your tree. Knit them in red and they will be lovely poinsettias. Supplies: Ravelry E-book Gypsy Snowflakes, #10 crochet cotton, #1 dpn s, tapestry needle, stitch markers, & 1.5mm crochet hook. Cabled Pillow Cover 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Friday, July 14 (10 am - Noon) Scared of cables? Want to learn how to make them without committing to a large project? This pillow is the perfect project to start your love of cables. The pillow in class will be made to cover the front of the pillow. Instructions will be given to make a pillow without seams to cover the front and back of a pillow form. There will be homework to do before class. Supplies: 2 skeins of Cascade 220, size 7-24

6 CLASSES (All supplies must be purchased at The Yarn Haven) GoodReader for Knitters 2 hours (Cost: $20) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Saturday, July 15 (10 am Noon) Saturday, August 26 (1-3 pm) Attention all ipad users! If you re not familiar with this fabulous app, let us introduce you and show you how to take all your patterns with you wherever you go! You ll learn how to store, manage, and annotate your patterns and you ll be done with tattered papers forever. Supplies: You will need to have several apps downloaded on your ipad before class, all available through the App store: GoodReader ($4.99), website to PDF (.99), Dropbox (free). You will also need to have a Ravelry account set up. Snobuddies Family - 4 hours (Cost: $40) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Saturdays, July 15 & 29 (1-3 pm) Thursdays, August 24 & 31 (10 am Noon) This delightful family will be a festive addition to any winter décor! Knitted in the round without seams, the whole family can be made in time for Christmas. Consider making one to reflect the personality of each of your family members. Supplies: paid pattern on Ravelry, size 2 or 3 dpns, Cascade 220 yarn, assorted fingering weight yarn for accessories, fiberfill stuffing, & marbles for weight. Learning to Read Lace - 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Thursday, July 20 (1-3 pm) Knitted lace is simply beautiful to behold, but sometimes can seem daunting to work. In this class we will give you the secrets to be able to read your work and know before you get to the end of the row that all is well or not. Using a lovely knitted lace dishcloth, we will also cover chart reading, life lines and how to pick up a missed yarn over. Homework: cast on 37 sts, knit 6 rows. Supplies: 1 skein Tahki Cotton Classic, size 4-5 needles with sharp tips, stitch markers, light cotton waste yarn. Pattern included with class. Dye It Yourself Workshop - 2 hours (Cost: $40) Instructor: Sandy Gray Saturday, July 22 (10 am Noon at Melissa Ray s home) Have you ever wanted to learn how to dye your own yarn? Well, here s your chance to learn some of the basics of dyeing. All supplies will be furnished and you will leave with your very own color creation in fingering weight yarn. We ll be dyeing with kool-aid, so please wear some old clothes. Mug Rugs - 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Leslie Smith Saturday, July 22 (2-4) Come learn how to use a small loom to weave coasters for mugs. They are fun to do and make great gifts as well. Supplies: 1 weaver s loom kit (which includes everything you need.) Knitted Ornaments - 2 hours (Cost: $35 includes kit) Instructor: Leslie Smith Monday, July 24 (10 am Noon) Come learn how to make beautiful beaded ornaments that will look great on your Christmas tree or as gifts to give to your family & friends. 7 CLASSES (All supplies must be purchased at The Yarn Haven) Continental Knitting - 2 hours (Cost: $25) Instructor: Kelora Goethe Thursday, July 27 (10 am Noon) Have you ever watched a continental knitter and pondered what it would be like to knit with such a smooth motion? Never letting go of your needle? Using much less motion in your arm and shoulder? Maybe it s time to add continental knitting to your knitting toolbox! In this class you will learn to tension your yarn in your left hand for knitting and purling. This method will make knitting & unknitting smoother and easier to discern errors, and therefore correct those errors. Supplies: worsted or DK weight yarn & needles to match. Al Fresco Shawl - 3 hours (Cost: $30) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Thursday, August 10 (1-4 pm) Join us as we learn to make this simple, elegant brioche shawl. Using only 1 skein of fingering weight yarn, this garter stitch-based pattern is completely reversible and uses simple short-rowing and double increases to make its crescent shape. Prerequisite: Must be familiar with the basic, one-color brioche stitch. Supplies: one skein tonal fingering weight yarn (at least 440 yards); size 6-32 circular needle, & stitch markers. Pattern included in class. Intro to Entrelac - 3 hours (Cost: $30) Instructor: Mimi Kezer Thursday, August 17 (1-4 pm) Make a beautiful scarf while learning the basics of entrelac. This one-session class will teach you all the essentials along with some tips and tricks of the trade. Prepare for a new addition! Supplies: 3 skeins Noro Silk Garden & size 9-16 circular needles. Class fees are non-refundable. Classes start promptly, so please be on time. Please put your cell phone on silent during the class so you don t disturb your classmates or other customers in the shop. All yarns used in the classes must have been purchased at The Yarn Haven unless the class is set up to use yarn from your stash. This helps everyone in class to be on the same page. Class size is limited and will not usually be canceled as long as one person has signed up. Space in classes is limited to registered students. This means no guests (adult or child). Classes may need to be rescheduled in case of bad weather or illness. Weekly Class make-ups must be done within the month of the class. Birthday Policy... Birthdays are times to celebrate. So at The Yarn Haven, you get a birthday discount!! Come to the shop during the week of your birthday and receive a one-time 10% discount on your purchases as my birthday gift to you. Discount does not include special orders or classes. Returns... No return on needles, hooks, patterns or books. No cash or credit card refunds will be given. Store credit will be given on items returned with receipt, in original condition (this means no dog hair, no smoke or perfume smell, no repackaging after testing yarn, i.e. must look brand new), within 30 days and if we still stock that item. Sale Bin items and Special Orders are not returnable. Our Go Green Program If you bring your own bag to put your purchases in...or don t take a paper bag...then you get a ticket for our monthly drawing for a $10 gift certificate. The winning ticket numbers will be posted on our website on the first day of each month. If you have one of the tickets, simply come to the shop by the end of the month and claim your prize. Hopefully, this will get us all in the habit of bringing our own bags everywhere. We love to socialize It s always great to get together with other crafters while you work on a project.
