1 Volume 24 Issue 6 February 2016 President s Perspective Karen Keller The Color Red Do you have a bin or shelf where you have neatly organized your red fabrics? Just kidding, I am not talking about planning or priorities this month. I am talking about that wonderful addition to our palettes that is so delightful. I don't know what we would do without it. According to Wikipedia Red color has a predominant light wavelength of roughly nanometres. So can they pinpoint exactly what part of light has red in it? That's what it sounds like. I think of it as the top color of a rainbow or between orange and pink on the color wheel. Josef Albers, (influential in art education and color theory), said If one says 'red' - the name of color - and there are fifty people listening, it can be expected that there will be fifty reds in their minds. And one can be sure that all these reds will be very different. Red is a very emotionally involved color. It s the color of fire and blood. It brings feelings of strength, pain, anger, passion, and love. We add it to our holiday quilts and to our valentine quilts. Some quilters add it to black and white and ZING it s stunning. It is the red stripes in our American flag that stands for Valor and Hardiness. Matadors use it to anger bulls, but bulls are colorblind so I don t know. It is definitely a color that gets noticed. Let us not forget in 2011 when Joanna S. Rose presented her Infinite Variety quilt show in New York. 650 red and white amazing quilts. Would it have been just as stunning in green and white? I don't think so. What s Inside Program Betsey Koss Trunk Show Mystery February 6, 2016 Quilt Day Haven Looking Ahead Donating gift cards and checks Pat Sloan lecture and workshops in March In caveman days, they painted on cave walls with iron oxide to get red and, by the way, iron oxide causes the red color around the planet Mars. Later on in America we used the Cochineal insect or the root of the Madder plant to produce red dye. To this day if you see red dye number 4 on the ingredients list or natural red color it comes from the Cochineal bug. Google Starbucks and this bug. Very interesting. Not to worry though, today our fabric is dyed with an artificial variety. No bugs involved. So to finish up don't get angry, get red and put those emotions into your next quilt.
2 Volume 24, Issue 6 February 2016 Programs Cookbooks First VP s Mary Toussaint & Jo Cassar What wonderful hints and tips we got on our Whistle Stop program. Has anyone made a selvedge project, done any appliqué, sorted your fabric and put a faux flange on your mitered border yet? Thank you Sue, Karen, Patti, Joyce and Becky. Betsy Koss will be joining us on February 11 to share her trunk show, Every Quilt Tells a Story Can t wait REMINDER PAT SLOAN Just a reminder that we do still have lots of cookbooks available. If you need some for yourself or to give as a gift (remember your kids and grandchildren should each have one, especially if you have a recipe in the book.) I will have them at every meeting so please seek me out at the meeting, by or phone. Diane Ladue MARCH MEETING AND WORKSHOPS WILL BE HELD AT FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH OF TROY 6363 LIVERNOIS TROY, MI The church is located on Livernois between South Blvd. and Square Lake Road on the west side of Livernois There is a very good map on their facebook page.
