1 Patchwork Flowerpot By Anne Day Materials required: Tracing paper. Pencil for tracing. Pins or Glue stick. Fabric for flowerpot, background and base 15cm square is ample. Floral fabric or felt for making the flowers. Iron on interfacing or vilene. Fabric glue. Sewing machine or needle and thread. This card has been made using a patchwork technique known as foundation piecing. This method enables everyone, including beginners, to achieve accurate results on small scale projects. The design is sewn onto a foundation of paper or fabric using lines drawn on the foundation as a sewing guide. Sometimes only one traced section is required, whereas, in other cases the designs are built up from several traced sections which are sewn individually and then joined to make the final piece. This design is made up using two traced sections which, when joined, make the flowerpot ready for filling with flowers. Tracing the design You will have to trace both diagrams twice; If you intend sewing by hand trace one onto tracing paper and the other onto calico. If you are sewing by machine trace both onto the tracing paper one of which will be used as your foundation instead of the calico. Make sure to trace the numbers as well as the solid and broken lines. The broken lines will be used for trimming down the finished sections. Leave a margin of at least 2cms around each section as you trace as this will make construction easier. Cutting the fabric Starting with section A, cut one of the tracings apart along the seam lines (the solid lines between the numbered pieces). This is used as the pattern for cutting your fabric. As each pattern piece is the actual size of the finished patch, you will need to add a seam allowance of 1cm to each side when cutting out. Pin the pattern pieces to the wrong side of your fabric and cut out. Remember to add the seam allowance. Section A: Cut piece 1 from the flowerpot fabric, pieces 2 and 3 from the background fabric and piece 4 from the base fabric. Section B: Cut piece 1 from the flowerpot fabric and pieces 2, 3 and 4 from the background fabric. See cutting templates at the end of this article. Construction The sewing is done along the lines marked on the tracing. This is the wrong side of the 21

2 finished design. As you are working from the back it is necessary to check the fabric position carefully before sewing. This is done most easily by holding the tracing up to the light with the drawn lines facing you and the fabric facing away from you. For hand sewing, the foundation should be on calico, for machine sewing you can use either tracing paper or calico. Starting with section A, place the fabric piece 1 right side up on the wrong side of the foundation so that it covers the area marked 1 with a border of about 1 cm all round. Pin into position or secure with a tiny dab of glue from a glue stick. Place piece 2 on top of piece 1, right sides together, along the adjoining seam line so both fabrics extend beyond the line by about 1 cm. To ensure pieces are placed correctly, put a pin along the seam line between the two pieces and open out piece 2 so that it lies in it s final position. It should cover area 2 plus any other seam allowances. Remove pin from the seam line and, being careful to keep the material in place, sew along the seam line between areas 1 & Extend the stitching a little at either end of the seam line. Open out piece 2 and press into place. Trim seam allowance to 5mm.

3 Position piece 3 as you did for piece 2. Pin, check and stitch. Extend stitching slightly at each end. Open out piece 3, press and trim the seam allowance to 5mm. Position piece 4, check and then stitch along seam line. Open out, press and then trim the seam allowance to 5mm. Trim Section A to the dotted line on all sides. This piece is now completed ready to affix to Section B. Repeat the procedure for section B working all pieces in numerical order. 23 Trim to the dotted line as for Section A.

4 Put the two sections, right sides together, matching line C-D, and stitch along this line. Press the seam to one side and trim seam to approximately 5mm. Remove paper, if used, by tearing along the seams. Any small pieces can be removed with tweezers. Press again. Adding the flowers There are many different ways to fill your flowerpot. I have illustrated flowers cut from printed fabric. The flowers look better if you iron on a light or medium weight interfacing to the back of the fabric before you cut them out. This also prevents fraying and gives the fabric more body. Simply glue or stitch the flowers and leaves into place. I have added a bead to the centre of each flower for added effect. Actual size templates Your flower pot is now ready for the flowers. A few alternative ideas you may like to try are as follows:- Flowers and leaves can also be cut from felt in different colours and stitched or glued into place as before. If you are able to do so, embroidered flowers look wonderful. Try your hand with fabric paints. Sequin flowers add extra sparkle for an unusual Christmas card. Cut flowers from wrapping paper or make them from tissue paper. C D C D Section A Section B 24
