The Bag Lady Second Hand Treasures from Second Hand Stores. The Art of Thrifting Our family has had so much fun over the years creating things from flea market finds. You see it you dream it. You will be surprised at what you can make with antique forks, old picture frames, mismatched plates and goblets, and scraps of fabric. Old things become new. Here we will show you some of our favorites. We had fun dreaming and making. Then YOU can start seeing and dreaming.
Accessories. Fabrique Necklace: This was so fun and easy to make. I bought a necklace that was just small wood beads, some big plastic crystal beads and then used scraps of 3 different materials to make it. I was able to get all of these at the local thrift store. I used a solid colored material to make the tie straps and tied it to the end of some beading string.
Then I started covering some beads with material by cutting different sized squares (depending on size of bead) and just stitched it closed. (Make sure that the hole of the bead is in the center of the square so you can put it on the necklace upright). Leave fringe, it adds to the crafty handmade look
. Then I also used small cut out fabric circles in between beads. The last picture is just a knot I tied out of a strip of fabric to create a bulky color to break up the wood beads.
Peacock Headband: This is one of the simplest things to make. You can purchase a peacock feather at most craft stores that is all ready to just be glued to a headband. You can use a plain headband or one you covered with a cute ribbon. It is cuter if you contour the feather instead of letting it stick up so I glued a strip of ribbon to the back of the feather to hold all the Strings together, then glued that to the headband as well as the bottom of the feather. Super glue works best. Hot glue is too bulky and seeps through.
Peek a boo Boots: Cut the sleeves off a cast off sweater, then slip over used kicks and slouch down until the top of the boots show. Finish off with a cool pin. Marilyn Pumps: Grab an old pair of smooth leather pumps, some Mod Podge from a local craft store, and some of your favorite clippings. Apply for one of akind unique shoes!
We used a jean mini skirt, a childs skirt, and a mini blanket to make these purses. You can use ribbon, a belt or a gold chain as a handle. We also used an antique broach with ribbon to add elegance to a plain white fur purse.
Home Potential Shines: A new coat of paint and some sparkling crystals give this discarded chandelier reason to shine.
Table Redone: Use an orbit sander to remove old finish off the top of the table. Wipe clean and either seal with a spray polyurethane if you like the nature wood, or spray paint desired color. For tough to sand areas you can use liquid sand if the paint will not stick or if it is a high traffic area. (Available at home improvement stores) Favorite Chair: This awesome armchair used to be baby blue. I used fabric dye, applied with a spray bottle, to dye it yellow and cured it out in the sunshine. NOTE: Since you can t rinse furniture, you shouldn t get it wet because it will bleed into clothes, for best results look for cotton upholstery.
Picture Perfect: Cool frame but horrible color? Just paint it up for an impressive display. Or you can Mod Podge with a cute scrap book paper to add some color.
Chique Shelves: Used to be all natural Pine. Paint the outside of the unit and the front of the shelf inserts. (note: you should rarely paint the shelf surface because your shelved items will nick and stick to the paint.) Then use wall paper on the inside back wall of the unit. Bonus: I even found this wallpaper at a thrift store! Drawer Detail: This antique chest of drawers had a sweet detail cut out work already. Accent it with another color first, then roll paint the main color leaving the grooves this pretty green!
Platters: Created from assorted platters, goblet, and candleholders. Use a good glass glue and hand wash.
Petite Servings: Glue glass candle holders and goblets to glass plates for elegant pedestal serving platters. Bowl: Glass cake cover upside down in a ceiling light fixture
Cheese Grater Candle Holders: for a fall décor feature, place votive candles inside weathered cheese graters the contours cast amazing shadows! Pincushion: light fixture with homemade decorative pillow top
Clothes Sweater Spice: Add some flavor to an old plain sweater with scraps of lace, ribbons, and buttons. Thia fun pink skirt was found at a second hand store, and just embellished with a fun sheer fabric taken off another second hand dress. We used a felted rose with some fun ribbons to spice up a plain brown sweater.
Aprons: Made from Sheets and bed skirts
Here we have a skirt that was made from the bottom of a womens jacket. We just sewed 2 inch black elastic to the top, and embellished with a bow. We chose not to felt this white sweater and we just cut off the bottom, under the sleeves and used the black elastic to make a waistband. Something simple like this skirt we thought we could spice up the outfit by using a busy top (found at a secondhand store) and a cute hairpin we made, instructions under Felted Creations.
You can barely believe that this saucy skirt used to be a mens suit jacket! We just cut off the bottom and used 2 black elastic for a easy waistband. We also added some panels of black lining covered with lace in the openings to make it modest. It makes it beautiful and classy. We found a simple cardigan at a second hand store that can make it more casual. It is so simple to be thrifty!
Felted Creations HOW TO FELT: You need a wool sweater. It needs to be AT LEAST 70% wool. Place in mesh laundry bag. Set washing machine to HOT WASH/COLD RINSE. Wash item, then shake out and lay flat to dry. You can repeat this as many times as needed. Some like it when you can still see a little stitch definition others like when you can t tell it was ever not a solid. Off the Cuff Bracelets: First felt an old sweater, then cut loops from the cuffs and the arms. Next decorate the bangles by using embroidery floss to sew on buttons, felt shapes, paper flowers, and more. Cut and sew a loop that fits.
This was done by cutting out a simple flower shapes and layering them. Then we used the hem of a sweater and folded in little 8 figures then stitched it secure with a button. A leaf is optional and we just stitched in on the back. For this one we needed a circle of cardboard or cardstock paper and just gather stitched around the outer edge of the fabric circle and pulled it tight. Then we secured it with stitches and glued a button. Leaves can be liquid stitched on the back.
For this skirt we cut the bottom off of a black FELTED sweater, used 2 inch black elastic as the waist band and embellished with black lace trim around the bottom and a black lace, teal ribbon combo bow with a felted rose. INSTRUCTIONS FOR FELTED ROSE: Cut a 10 by 3 rectangle from a felted sweater. Fold in half lengthwise so you have a 10 by 1.5 rectangle. Hand stich a gather stitch along the NOTfolded edges. Gather slightly and roll into a rose. Stictch bottom together to hold shape.
We used a skirt to make the purse. Felted flowers can be used to embellish an old hat. Throw in a lacy bow and you have an elegant duo! We just cut a paper Pattern of two different sized flowers and just layered them with the smaller on top. Then we stitched them together with a cute button as the center. We used some trim, and black netting to create a little funky color or just a little spunk.
Another felted sweater made into skirt. This one we left unembellished so that you can do really funky accessories or do pin on embellishements. This blue childs sweater made an adorable baby skirt. We just used some retro looking buttons to give it a litte nostalgia.
Thank you for visiting our site! We had so much fun getting creative and coming up with ways to show you the Art of Thrifting! We hope that you have as much as fun as we did. This is something that your young daughters can do with you. The more the merrier.
