24 Page 24 Assembly Directions for Puff Bead Necklace 1. Stitch the five graduated beads on a large hoop or the sets of two and a large single bead on the small hoop (4 x 4 or 3.5 x 5 ). Use a medium to light weight fabric. You can make a necklace of all five with purchased beads* in between, a set of three beads, or two beads with a pendant in the center. The 14ct. beads will be fatter and the 16 and 18 ct. thinner. 2. Trim finished stitching apart; the short ends are the seam, and the long sides are trimmed to ½ then pressed over ¼ to the wrong side. 3. Seam the short ends together on the machine (right sides together ), or butt together by hand (wrong sides together). If you use the machine, the beads have to be turned by folding in with your finger or with the eraser end of a pencil (this is tricky). If you seam by hand, you will probably have to use a binding stitch with one of the colors to cover the seam line. You now have a tube shape. 4. Using a needle and thread, stitch a running stitch around all folded ends. Leave tails so you can gather up as in step#5. Cut foam hair rollers* the length of your stitching (there are 3 sizes-small medium & large,so cut 2 of the same size at the same time). If your beads are the fat variety buy the large size, but the medium work on the all counts. 5. Twist foam rollers into the tube slowly until even on both ends, using the eraser end of pencil or insert tweezers through the tube and pull into place. Pull up running stitch on both ends and tie with several knots, leaving a hole in the middle for stringing. 6. The beads are now complete, ready to string on a necklace using satin cording (approx. 1 ½ yds.) or ribbon* (approx. 1yard) as illustrated, on a bracelet using elastic, as a single scissor fob, as a key chain fob, as an eyeglass necklace, or as a Xmas ornament. Use coordinating spacer beads as shown. After stringing onto cord, knot ends next to last bead to hold in place and knot ends to prevent raveling. *Beads, spacers, and rayon cording can be purchased at the big box stores, fabric stores, and local bead shops. Tape measure ribbon is by Offray. Red Asian beads from the Beadery. *Seam tape measure ends together by hand. *Foam hair rollers are available in drug stores, or beauty supply stores. Remove and discard the plastic frame.

25 Page 25 Notepad Cover Assembly Instructions Draw a rectangle around your finished embroidery, 3/8 outside the design. Cut on the line. All pieces include ¼ seam allowance. Cut the following pieces from Cut from batting: Contrasting fabric: 1 rectangle 6 ½ x 10 ½ 4 framing strips 2 x 6 1 back cover rectangle 5 ½ x 6 ½ 1 lining rectangle 5 x 10 ½ 1 lining rectangle 9 x 10 ½ Stitch framing strips to the left and right sides the embroidered rectangle. Press the strips away from the rectangle and trim the ends of the strips even with the embroidered piece. Stitch the remaining two framing strips to the top and bottom of the embroidered unit. Press the strips away from the embroidery. Carefully trim the pieced and embroidered unit into a rectangle 5 ½ wide and 6 ½ high. Sew the back cover rectangle to the front unit to make a 6 ½ x 10 ½ rectangle. Press carefully. Place the pieced rectangle on top of the batting and baste around all four sides within the ¼ seam allowance. Fold the 9 x 10 ½ lining rectangle in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press. Position the folded rectangle on the pieced cover unit, right sides together, matching the raw edges at the bottom and sides. Serge or hem one long edge of the 5 x 10 ½ lining rectangle. Right sides together, place it on the pieced note pad cover, matching the raw edges at the top and sides and partially covering the folded rectangle. Stitch around the entire perimeter of the note pad cover through all thicknesses. Clip corners and trim the batting within the seam allowance to reduce bulk. Turn the cover right side out by reaching between the lining pieces. The folded edge of the larger lining piece will cover the hemmed edge of the smaller lining piece and extend toward the top of the note pad cover, forming a pocket to hold pen and paper. Carefully press the note pad cover. Find the center of the cover and mark stitching lines 3/8 to either side of the center, Stitch on these lines through all thicknesses, creating a slot to hold a pen or pencil along the cover s spine.

26 Page 26 Instructions for Sewing Band Alignment After stitching all color stops, measure and record the distance from the end of the hoop to this marker, and re-hoop using the same distance from the other end of the hoop with a new sewing field. Stitch color stop #1 and adjust the fabric in the hoop so that it lines up closely to your first set of marks. (We suggest to do this first rough adjustment without any thread in the needle) Run a few stitches and note their location relative to the marker stitches. At this point, adjust with the machine position arrows for exact needle position. (You may have to reload the design to make the necessary fine final adjustments.) 27 Page 27 Sewing Pincushion Assembly Instructions Embroider the design on stabilized fabric. Draw a square ½ outside the embroidery and trim along the line. Cut a square of lining fabric and a square of contrasting fabric or felt the same size as the embroidered square. Place the lining fabric behind the embroidered square and baste the two together. They will be treated as one piece while constructing the pincushion. Mark the midpoint of each side of the embroidered square and contrasting backing. Clip into the seam allowance at each midpoint, clipping only about 1/8 deep. With right sides together, place the contrasting square on the embroidered square, aligning the corners of the one square with the midpoints of the other as shown. Pin the midpoint of the one side to the corresponding corner of the other square. Begin stitching about 1 before the pinned corner. Backstitch to secure the seam and use a ¼ seam allowance. Stitch to the corner and pivot, allowing the seam allowance to spread open at the clipped midpoint. Match and pin the next corner and midpoint. Stitch and pivot as before. Continue stitching around the pincushion, matching corners to midpoints as you go. Stop stitching and backstitch about 1 past the last midpoint/corner. This will leave an opening for turning and stuffing. Turn the pincushion right side out. Stuff firmly with fiberfill or wool. Slip stitch the opening to close and finish the pincushion.
