3 Supplies 1 2 yard each of linen & print cotton lining fabric (See Sources. ) 1 4 yard of coordinating print cotton fabric (pencil pouch; see Sources ) 9 -long metal zipper Eyelet kit (including 6 large eyelets with 1 4 -diameter holes) 2 size 24 ( 5 8 ) heavy-duty snaps 3 binder rings Tear-away stabilizer Stiff craft interfacing Embroidery floss (See Sources. ) Size 5 hand embroidery needle x8 1 2 sheets of card stock (as many as desired for notebook pages) Awl Hammer Hole punch PREPARe it Download the Write On pattern from sewitallmag.com. From the linen and lining, cut one cover each. Transfer the embroidery design markings to the linen right side. Cut a piece of tear-away stabilizer as large as the marked-linen embroidery area. Center the stabilizer over the linen embroidery-area wrong side, and then baste the stabilizer perimeter. Thread an embroidery needle with two strands of embroidery floss, and then use a backstitch to embroider the linen design, referring to the photo above for color and placement. For instructions on the backstitch and other basic hand embroidery stitches, download the Hand Embroidery Stitch Guide from sewitallmag.com. From the stiff interfacing, cut one cover. Trim 3 8 from the perimeter. From the remaining linen, cut two 2 x8 strips and one 4 x8 1 2 strip. From the coordinating print cotton fabric, cut one 8 x12 rectangle F+W Media, Inc.

4 /8 2. Sew It With right sides together, align the linen and lining covers; pin. Stitch the perimeter using a 3 8 seam allowance, leaving a 4 opening along one long edge for turning. Trim and clip the corners (1). Turn the cover right side out, carefully pushing out each corner; press. Slide the stabilizer cover inside the fabric-cover opening, fitting and tucking it securely into each corner. Fold the opening edges 3 8 toward the wrong side; press. Topstitch the perimeter using an 1 8 seam allowance, securing the interfacing and closing the opening with the stitches F+W Media, Inc.

5 Transfer the eyelet and snap placement markings to the linen-cover spine and side flaps (2). Install the eyelets and snaps following the manufacturer s instructions. Thread binder rings through each eyelet pair. With right sides together, fold each small linen strip in half lengthwise; press. Place the zipper right side up on a flat work surface. Position one strip over one zipper-tape side, aligning the fold 1 8 from the zipper teeth; pin. Pin the remaining folded strip along the opposite zipper-tape side. Edgestitch each fold, moving the zipper pull out of the way as needed (3). With right sides together, stitch each cotton-fabric rectangle short edge to one linen-strip long raw edge, creating a tube. Press the tube flat, allowing ½ of cotton-print fabric to extend above the zipper. Open the zipper slightly, and then turn the tube to the wrong side (4). Pin the tube open edges closed, and then stitch using a ½ seam allowance. Open the zipper completely, and then turn the pouch right side out through the opening; press. With right sides together, fold the large linen strip in half lengthwise; press, and then unfold. Fold the long raw edges to abut along the center foldline; press. Fold the short ends ½ toward the wrong side; press. Fold the strip along the original center foldline, enclosing all raw edges; press. Position the pouch lower edge within the strip fold, centering the pouch; pin. Edgestitch the strip folded edges through all layers (5). Finish It Using the eyelets as a placement and spacing reference, mark three centered ½ vertical buttonholes along the pouch lower linen strip. Stitch each buttonhole, and then carefully cut open each one. Use a hole punch to punch holes along the card-stock left edges, using the eyelets as a placement reference. Thread the binder rings through the pouch and card-stock holes; close the binder rings. To close the cover, fold the upper and lower flaps inward.
