1 Country Throw Pillow Bring a taste of the country into your home with this patchwork throw pillow. It features cuddly appliquéd animals and farmyard buildings. With its pastel and plaid fabrics, it's like a breath of fresh country air! STEP: 1 STEP: 2 You will also need one 20oz bag of batting. STEP: 3 STEP: 4 Gather 1/3 yard white fabric, (for embroidering the designs on). 1/2 yard of a solid color (I used green). This will be the back and sides of the pillow.

STEP: 5 STEP: 6 Five 3 square scraps from each of the following fabrics two patterns & one solid, so that you have 15 squares in all. This is for the patchwork border on the pillow. For design DL43, the horse, I used the following embroidery thread colors: Madeira Dark Khaki 1393 (stops 1, 2, &5); Madeira Toast 1136 (stop 3); Madeira Tawny Tan 1055 (stop 4); Madeira Black 1000 (stop 6); Madeira Avocado 1169 (stop 7); Madeira Classic Green 1370 (stop 8). For the Barn DL22, I used Madeira Mullberry 1281 (stops 1, 2, & 4); Madeira White 1001 (stop 3); Madeira Black 1000 (stop 5); Madeira Lemon 1023 (stops 6 & 8); Madeira Cream (stop 7). STEP: 9 STEP: 10 For the Sheep DL36, I used Madeira Cinnamon 1173 (stops 1, 2, & 4); Madeira Pale Sea Foam 1071 (stop 3); Madeira Powder Blue 1074 (stop 6); Madeira Bright Navy Blue 1166 (stop 7).

4 STEP: 9 STEP: 10 For the Sheep DL36, I used Madeira Cinnamon 1173 (stops 1, 2, & 4); Madeira Pale Sea Foam 1071 (stop 3); Madeira Powder Blue 1074 (stop 6); Madeira Bright Navy Blue 1166 (stop 7). For the Windmill DL40, I used Madeira Baby Blue 1028 (stops 1,2 & 4); Madeira Avocado (stop 3); Madeira Tan 1126 (stop 5); Madeira Bright Navy Blue 1166 (stop 6); Madeira Peach 1019 Medium Peach (stop 7); Madeira Coral 1107 (stop 8). STEP: 11 STEP: 12 Other recommended supplies include a rotary cutter and cutting mat, a quilting ruler (the 45 degree marked angle is useful on this project), straight pins, a hand sewing needle, and a temporary fabric marking pencil. On your 1/3 yard of fabric (white), mark four 5 1/4" squares. Mark the center point on each square. Embroider your four designs, one in the center of each square. STEP: 13 STEP: 14 Right sides together, pin two embroidered squares together.

Using a 1/4" seam, sew two together along one side.

STEP: 15 STEP: 16 Open the two rectangles you've just created.

5 STEP: 13 STEP: 14 Right sides together, pin two embroidered squares together. Align the squares with the top of the designs upward. Using a 1/4" seam, sew two together along one side. Reapeat Step 13 for the two remaining embroidered squares. STEP: 15 STEP: 16 Open the two rectangles you've just created. Lay them right sides together, lining up their center seams. STEP: 17 STEP: 18 Cut Five 3" squares from your main pillow

These five plain blocks will be interspersed with the 15

Seam pairs of the twenty 3" squares you now have together.

6 STEP: 17 STEP: 18 Cut Five 3" squares from your main pillow fabric (green chosen in step selected in step 4). These five plain blocks will be interspersed with the 15 pattern blocks cut in step five. Seam pairs of the twenty 3" squares you now have together. STEP: 19 STEP: 20 Seam together two sets of two from the last step to create a chain of four. Repeat. Seam together three sets of two from step 17 to form a chain of six. Repeat. STEP: 21 STEP: 22 Right sides together, pin one chain of four along one side of your

embroidered block and the end blocks of your chains of four.

STEP: 24 From the main pillow fabric (green, selected in color stop 4), cut four 17" x

STEP: 23 Right sides together, pin one set of six blocks along the top of your embroidered block and the end blocks of your chains of four. Match the center seams, and sew together. Repeat this along the bottom side as well. STEP: 24 From the main pillow fabric (green, selected in color stop 4), cut four 17" x 1 1/2" rectangles. These will form the front edge border. STEP: 25 STEP: 26 Mark the center of each side of the center block formed in step twenty-two. Lengthwise, mark the centers of each of the four border strips.

Match the marked centers of the borders with the corresponding mark in the center blcok, and pin (right sides together). Using a 1/4" seam, stitch the center block amd borders together, stopping 1/4" away from each corner. Flip one side of the borders over to lie on top of the perpendicular side of double borders, so that right sides are together, lined up exaclty. Right sides together, sew completed front piece to back piece, (which was cut in step 24), leaving a 3 opening at the bottom.

9 STEP: 27 STEP: 28 To finish the corners: Using a ruler, draw a 45 line from the inside corner mark to the outside corner mark. Sew along the line. Cut off the excess fabric, and iron flat for ease of use. Right sides together, sew completed front piece to back piece, (which was cut in step 24), leaving a 3 opening at the bottom.
