1 Reed & Weave Hello to you all! December 2017 Edition President s Message. I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends. I look forward to seeing you all at our December Auction. At our last meeting we took our vote and elected new officers. Thank you to all those who have served and are leaving their offices and to those who are taking their places. Instead of a live auction, we are going to try a silent auction. Take a look at the newsletter for specifics for the auction, but bring a lovely item to donate, bring your check book, and as always, bring you pot-luck dish to share! This will be my last newsletter, so I will say that it has been a privilege to serve the guild as your president. You have been a wonderful group to lead so creative and positive. I could not have asked for a more energetic and talented group of weaving, spinning and fiber artists! So I will say one more time: keep weaving; spinning; dyeing and creating! 3 2017 Silent Auction and Potluck Luncheon Inland Empire Handweavers Guild invites you to participate in our Silent Auction and Potluck luncheon! Auction: Your contributions will exhibit the creativity and talent of our membership. We welcome hand crafted items -- knitted, painted, sculpted, woven, spun, carved, cut, sewn, etc. Other items that make great auction items are craft-related items such as equipment, yarn or related books. Please bring items ready to display to maximize sale potential. Please, no white elephants. If you ve never been to a silent auction, I ll briefly describe the process. You can tour all the items, as all works will be on display before bidding. At the opening bell, you can put in your bid and name on the sheet by any item you wish. When someone has put in a bid more than yours, you need to increase the bid to stay in the game. You ll need to check your items from time to time to see if someone has out-bid you. If so, you can raise your bid or give up! A final call will be made about 5 minutes before the end of the auction, so that you will have time to check your items. You must pay for your items on the day of the auction. Checks made out to IEHG or cash are acceptable. Everyone s full participation is needed. Please bring friends and family to attend! Please fill out a submission form when you bring in your item to be auctioned. We look forward to seeing all your creative contributions!

5 Mystery Coverlet by Suzanne Chappell IEHG had a visitor who greeted us when we arrived for the November meeting. Verona McCutcheon, of Claremont, brought in an antique coverlet to see if we could tell her anything about the yarns or the pattern. The coverlet, woven by her husband s grandmother consisted of three panels sewn together. The ground cloth was singles (probably linen) and the pattern was wool singles. I thought the gray pattern wool was the natural color of the fleece and that I wasn t sure what would have been used for the light rust. It is my guess that the woven pattern is Monk s Belt. I suggested that Verona contact the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and she did. A conservator asked her to send some pictures and she is waiting to hear back from her. After returning home, she called her husband s 93-year old cousin in Louisiana to learn more of the provenance of the quilt. Bessie Gertrude Pearce McCutcheon, was born in 1889 in Whitesboro, TX. She, with her mother and sisters were the weavers, and possibly the spinners as well. Bessie grew up in Whitesboro, where the quilt was most probably woven. She moved to Madill, OK as a young adult. The cousin did not know of this coverlet but has another, smaller indigo one knowing only that the grandmother (Bessie's mother, Levicy Evaline Raborn) was the weaver. In retrospect, Verona wishes she had more detailed information and had asked her mother-in-law about the coverlet. I have asked her to update us when she hears from LACMA.

This is a project based class that covers weave structure, yarn and project selection, measuring yarn, warping the loom, weaving and finishing a project. Classes have 3-5 students.
