September 2016 Tzouhalem Spinners and Weavers Guild Newsletter Hello Spinners and Weavers, Happy 100th Birthday, Margaret White! Margaret, one of TSWG s founding members, celebrated her centenary in September. She was a dedicated and inspirational Guild member for many many years. Gudrun, who keeps in touch with her, shared this beautiful photo of Margaret that was taken this summer. Thank you for everything, Margaret! Happy spinning and weaving, Cynara 1
And look at this from the Guild Archives! A page from the TSWG notes in 1974 shows the incipient meeting of the Spinners and Weavers Guild was in Margaret White s home! 2
September Show and Tell Welcome America! our new member. America has moved to Canada from Chile. She loves colour, and fibre and weaving. Can t you tell?! She shared her handmade loom on which she wove her tapestry and slippers. 3
TSWG Runway - Marion in her Sylvia Olsen hand spun vest, Lois wearing her Barn Sweater, beautifully finished, - pattern from Connie Chinchio s Textured Stitches. Kazuko modeling Michele s Hunger Games fashion vest - hand spun of course, And Carol, in her latest fascinator hat 4
Gudrun s exquisite fingertip towels, Cynara s Treadle Lightly crammed and dented scarf Cynara s M s and O s towels Ane Marie s bamboo scarf - summertime weaving in her garden on her rigid heddle loom And Barb H s Crooked Path runners. Beautiful! 5
Summer Travels bring back wonderful Show and Tells: Anna Marie M shared these extraordinary linen towels from Denmark s Flax Museum. Also, beautiful textile cards the Museum puts together from pieces of weaving. Kathy W went to the inspiring Indigo Exhibit in Seattle. Kazuko shared Japanese crafts - rubber band earrings - the packaging is as artful as the item. 6
Alison spent many months preparing for teaching her Inkle Doubleweave and Pebbleweave at the International Braiding Conference in Tacoma in July. Braids-2016-Conference-details A wealth of learning and giving was had by teachers and attendees. Here is the book she came home with, and her variegated yarn inkle braid, and woven lanyard done on a back strap loom. Karen Miller, in her summer getaways taught sock knitting to newbie sockateers. With limited resources of time, she focussed on the bones of sock knitting, bypassing the cuff and leg which most knitters already know how to do, and started with a provisional cast on and got right into the heel and gusset. 7
Marion knit her Helliwell Cardigan from her hand spun alpaca/silk, Anna Marie knit her Tilting Block scarf, and Carol J s hat and baby mitts. and Carol J s shawl in Michele s silk wool hand dye, which needs about 3 yards of yarn to complete! 8
Cynthia s dyeing days: hand spun yak silk, hand painted warps, and indigo over dyed on puce boucle. Carol J s green and brown hand spun, Muriel s fleece and hand spuns dyed with natural dyes. 9
Things on the never getting done to do list, Done! Cynara s handwoven merino cashmere twill finally sewn into a vest, and her pine needle and raffia basket, made 20 years ago, chewed by the teething kitten 8 years ago, now, finally repaired. And JoAnne s brilliant idea: her little dumpling bag that she sewed from her handwoven fabric. Pattern is found online: just google dumpling bag 10
