1 May 2009 Hello my fellow knitters! You can feel a warm breeze and flowers are blooming: Summer is here! Contrary to some who think that summer is only for gardening, it is also a great time for knitting. There are lots of beautiful summer patterns and yarns. Last newsletter, we let you know about some Spring/Summer books and yarns that had already arrived at Wool N Things. We will look at some of those more closely over the next few weeks so that you can carry on with your knitting whether at home, at the cottage or traveling. Summertime is a wonderful time to knit accessories. The projects are lightweight and need very little time. The accessory of this season is the scarf. You can see them everywhere and on everyone. For this issue of the newsletter we are focusing on 2 free scarf patterns. The first one is knit with OASIS from the South West Trading Company. Made of 100% Soy Silk, it is both lightweight and luxurious. The drape is wonderful. With 2 balls, the scarf is long enough to be doubled over or can also be used as a summer stole. Oasis comes in a variety of plain and variegated colours. You may have to make one to coordinate with every outfit! Our second featured scarf is quite striking and super easy to knit. It is a combination of garter stitch and wrap arounds. It is pictured here in Bonsai (red) and Seduce (light teal). Both yarns, from Berocco, have interesting textures. They are both very lightweight and so are perfect for a summer accessory. The simplicity of the pattern allows the beauty of the yarn to be at the forefront. This pattern is excellent for a variety of different yarns and you can experiment with many looks. Both patterns are free of charge, so drop by the store to pick one up and see what yarns and colours appeal to you the most.

3 Just In! We have just received a shipment of Malabrigo Lace in a variety of solid and handpainted colours. We will be chatting about the popularity of knitted lace shawls in an upcoming newsletter, but if you just can t wait, feel free to drop by and be inspired by the luscious colours. Knit Along Update The ladies have started to knit the Foolish Virgin scarf by Kaffe Fassett. It is very interesting to see the progress of each one. Coming Soon Lorna Laces yarns Charity Knitting Would you like to knit for the East Ottawa Blankets4Canada chapter of the Blankets for Canada Society Inc? All you have to do is crochet or knit 8 x 8 (20cm x 20cm) squares and/or sew the squares together, 6 squares wide by 8 squares high. The blankets will be distributed FREE to agencies that work with people without shelter in our area.

7 The individual squares or completed blankets can be dropped off at Wool N Things and we will arrange for distribution to the proper agencies. Some knitters have already donated 200 squares. We will need volunteers to help us sew the squares into blankets. If you wish to join us, Wool N Things will be scheduling one afternoon per month to this task. Please call us at or check our web site for the scheduled dates. Save all your receipts for the yarn you purchase for making these blankets. Just come in to the store or call us at and provide us with the list of items on your wish list. We will keep them on file, inform your friends and family of what you would like and keep track of the items so you don t receive the same item twice!
