Guild meetings are usually held the second Saturday of the month beginning at 9:00 am at the Blind Center 1001 North Bruce St.( except July and Aug ) Please check the newsletter each month for date and location of the meeting. Everyone with a love of fiber is welcome. I am thankful for all the members of the guild, and especially those that work hard to make our guild special and fun. December is coming up. The meeting was called to order by President Charles Parker. He thanked our hosts, Kevin and Cassandra Bartlett, for allowing us to hold our meeting in their store, Mirage Fiber Arts. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as published in the newsletter. Treasurer Cinda Towne reported that our checking account balance is $6,536.55, of which $1,200 is reserved to pay for the upcoming Spady workshop. She also reminded everyone that dues are payable ASAP. She ll be printing up the yearbook soon and only current, paidup members will be in it. Kathi Meisel thanked everyone who has contributed ideas for the newsletter. She is thinking of putting in a new section where members can advertise any items they have for sale. Maurine Adrezin reminded all members who are taking Robyn Spady s class that it will be held at Lorelle s house. Maurine will continue to keep us posted about the status of future classes. Janet Mayers reported that we have lots of equipment available for rental: wheels, looms, reeds, carding equipment, etc. Contact her if you re interested in trying out any of these before investing in one of your own. Librarian Michelle Duncan reported that Elaine Eggink will be taking over the library. Historian Monique Portanger had nothing new to report. She s still going through the records and organizing. Elaine Eggink, Hospitality, reported that she has purchased some single serving packets of instant coffee to replace the old stale jar we got rid of. After some discussion, it was moved, seconded, and approved that we purchase a new pod-style coffee maker at a cost of $200 or less. Vicki Johnson told us that we would be having a special raffle this time, with only one win per person. Many thanks to Kevin and Cassandra, who donated the prizes in the form of gift certificates and merchandise from their store. Vicki also updated us with the latest news from the Mormon Fort.

3 Hermi Hiatt updated us about the IWC conference to be held July 25-30, 2017 in Durango, Colorado. If you re planning to attend, she recommended that you join the IWC. Dues are very low, and you get priority registration for classes at the conference. Kathi reminded members that the favors we ll be making for the IWC conference this time will be small needle cases. They can be woven, knitted, crocheted, quilted, or whatever you like. The size should be roughly 3 x4 when closed, with smaller or larger ones also acceptable. We ll need around 250 of them. Nancy Belian s son has already started working on the box for the IWC auction. To fill it, the theme this year will be red: red in color or heart-shaped. Our guest, Lucy Dittmar, brought bags of qiviut to give away. She gathered it on the tundra in Alaska and has more that she could use, so she thought we might appreciate having some. In appreciation, we voted to give Lucy a membership to our guild. Maggie Nicholes told us about the Pomegranate Art Festival to be held at the Clark County Fair Grounds in nearby Logandale. Lori Zajac talked about the mini workshop she ll be giving at our next meeting, and passed around a sample of what we ll be making. Becky Falkner has an 8-shaft 26 Baby Wolf loom that needs a new home. Meeting Closed Show & Tell: Maurine showed us some needle felted bears she made. Carolyn passed around a Fair Isle sweater jacket she knitted. Hermi modeled a bracelet she bought, made from Nespresso pods. Maggie visited a weaving shop in Silverton and showed us a scarf from there. Janet passed around a mobius scarf she made as part of a weave-along, place mats she wove for her sister, and a hat made of woven paper that she got at a Seattle Seahawks Hat Night giveaway. Luanna showed us 2 knitted bags, one felted and one unfelted. Cassandra showed us a blanket she made for her cat, knitted from angora, alpaca, cashmere, and silk. (lucky cat!) Kevin displayed his first weaving project, a Prince Charles tartan. We finished up with a demonstration from Gail Wright on how to use a warping wheel.

4 Guild Meeting Nov. 12, 2016 This month s guild meeting will be back at the Blind Center starting around 9 am. We will have a new coffee pot which allows you to choose your choice of coffee or you can bring your own k cup pods of tea, soup etc. We hope this will be a nice fit for our group. Simple snacks are provided by the guild to go along with your beverage. Lori Zajak will give instructions for a hands on mini project at the beginning of the meeting. This way members can work on their project during the business meeting. The warping directions are given to the right. The directions are available in the book Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom also pictured on the right. Looks like a fun meeting; hope to see you there! The answer to last month s word is; BLOTCH (dialectic corruption of Blot ) A spot in the fabric where the weft misses one or more warp threads. Synonym : Scobb. Encyclopedia of Handweaving, Stanislaw A. Zielinski, page 12 Everyone should know the meaning of this month s word. Just put your thinking caps on and I m sure it will come to you immediately. A mini project Prepare your rigid heddle loom ahead of time: 8" dent heddle Cotton yarn: Sugar and Cream 72 ends = 9" width per instructions Knitting needle (to obtain loops) size 8 Crochet hook I warped 2 yards to get 5 wash cloths I did 64 ends = 7" width before washing I used knitting needle size 10 1/2 Instead of crochet hook I used my fingers Weave 2" of tabby. This will parties all be used as a hem I will show you at class how to make the loops (your choice of color for the loops) 8" of loops Repeat the last 2" of tabby CISELE

5 Intermountain Weavers Conference The Southern Nevada Handweavers and Spinners, Inc Guild has a tradition of making conference favors for the conference attendees. This conference we will be making needle cases. The cases should be about 3 by 4 inches when closed. An example and some simple directions can be found on the next page. Thank you Audrey Strehlow. There are no hard set rules, the given sizes are suggestions. You can weave, crochet, quilt, felt, them or any other technique you can invent. Attach some felt or flannel to the inside and voila. You can even put in a few needles if you want. Audrey has flannel if you need some. Nancy Belian has made some very nice ones, ask her to show you. Another item we make for the conference is a hand made box by Donovan Belian. We then add various fiber items related to a theme. This time s theme is hearts going along with the conference theme. Any heart type item, shape, red color, book title. Anything somehow related to the idea of hearts will make a nice addition to our box. Below are the classes available at the upcoming IWC event.
