Guild meetings are usually held the second Saturday of the month beginning at 9:00 am at the Blind Center 1001 North Bruce St. ( except July and Aug ) Please check the newsletter each month for date and location of the meeting. Everyone with a love of fiber is welcome. Elected Officers for President: Kathleen Meisel Vice President: Charles Parker Secretary: Jami Johnson Treasurer: Cinda Towne Welcome Back Guild Members, I hope your summer break was enjoyable. We have some events coming up soon. The Spring Mountain Pioneer Days on Saturday Sept. 16 and the Somethings Scottish on Sat. Sept. 30. Please let me know if you are interested in either one or both. These are both yearly events for our guild and lots of fun. More information later in newsletter. We really need raffle items. Guild member Sal Koebke has taken on this tremendous responsibility with little materials left to give. So please glance through your stash and donate. You can bring items to the meeting. Thanks for all you do, Kathi The Fiber Arts Guild P.O. Box Las Vegas, NV Website lvfiberartsguild@gmail.com Facebook

IWC July 2017 by Janet Mayers Las Vegas was well represented in Durango this year. Hermi Hiatt, Lorelle Nelson, Liz LaRue, Bibi Bellotto, Cinda Towne, Earnestine Howell, Anette McKee and Janet Mayers all made the trek to Fort Lewis College. Rene Zender now of Santa Fe was there too. They took classes in spinning, knitting, weaving color, clothing embellishments, and Navajo weaving. Hermi worked hard on the IWC board making sure the vendors were there and happily selling us all kinds of wonderful fiber related essentials. Liz's beautiful lace shawl from recycled cashmere won honors and a fancy woven ribbon in the Celebrations of Fiber Members' Exhibit. Earnestine was high bidder and took home our heart covered box and it's contents. Our poster was by far the most outstanding of the group. It was an uplifting and inspiring event. IWC guild poster made by Vicki Johnson. The poster shows the many places our guild gives demonstrations of weaving and spinning skills. Below are some needle cases made by our members as give aways to conference goers. More on the next page

Hermi s Zoom Loom needle cases On my 4x4 inch zoom loom from Schacht Spindle Company, I wove two squares. I used yarn of various thickness, and found that worsted nonsuperwash yarns worked best. I used two washed squares to crochet together. There is no filler in between. Crochet a loop at one corner, and sew on a button on the opposite corner. A little steam ironing finishes off nicely. After I was finished with the needle cases in the photo, I started using two finer yarns together for the warping, then dropped one of the fine yarns and wove the 5 yards or so with single yarn. Makes a lovely heathered piece. Our guild has often had some of the more interesting items to give to people attending IWC. This year we sent some wonderful needle cases. A few are pictured below. Thanks to all involved.

Guild Meeting at Blind Center June 10, 2017 Members attending: Charles Parker, Jean Suess, Elizabeth LaRue, Janet Mayers, Earnestine Howell, Maurine Adrezin, Jan Flores, Bill Quill, Pamm Spooner, Carole LeFevre, Marilyn MacMurtrie, Carolyn Oatley, Donna Young, Nancy Belian, Sal Koebke, Beverly Fielder, Cinda Towne, Jami Johnson, Lorelle Nelson, Hermi Hiatt, Vicki Johnson, and Kathi Meisel. President Charles Parker called the meeting to order. Minutes of the previous meeting were approved as published in the newsletter. Treasurer Cinda Towne reported that the balance in our checking account is $5, The Guild's Sales and Use Tax Exemption was approved through She also reminded members that she is still collecting dues. It was moved and seconded that we make our annual donation to the Blind Center. After discussion, members decided to increase the donation this year to $250. The increase was approved by all members. Cinda suggested that we increase the amount we charge members for workshops, starting with the coming year. The current $100 charge is falling short of actual costs, even with the grants we have gotten. After discussion, it was moved, seconded, and approved that we increase the charge to $135 for members and $185 for non-members. We will review these charges annually to be sure they remain appropriate. Because this coming year is the 50 th anniversary of our Guild, it was suggested that we have a special anniversary banner made up that we can use when we do demos or other public events. Kathi Meisel will see to the printing of the banner, as well as ordering a resupply of business cards and pens that we can give out. The Handweavers Guild of America (HGA) has asked us for a donation. Being as we aren't sure what this donation would mean for us, Cinda will investigate and find out how it would benefit us. Kathi Meisel thanked everyone who has contributed articles and/or ideas to the Newsletter. It makes her job as editor much easier. Contributions can be made at any time, but if you need something to go into an upcoming newsletter, make sure you submit it to her no later than mid-month. Maurine Adrezin gave us a brief run-down of all the upcoming classes and/or workshops. She thinks ahead, and has one scheduled for Future newsletters will have a section that lists them all, and Maurine will continue to keep everyone updated by . Janet Mayers reported as Librarian that she continues to bring a selection of books and materials to the meetings so members have better access. Just see Janet and fill out the simple form to check out anything she has brought in. Kathi received a comment that a few DVDs were defective, so she'll replace the bad ones. Also, Janet reported on Equipment, telling members that there are looms, wheels, reeds, and all sorts of other items available for rent. Try them out before investing in one of your own.

Kathi Meisel reported that the Guild's website is now officially the property of the Guild. Hermi Hiatt showed us a large bag-full of needlecases that will be going to the IWC convention next month. She'll lay out all 184 of them so they can be photographed. Nancy Belian said that her son has the box for the IWC almost finished. It will be ready in plenty of time to go to the convention. Hermi will be flying in to the conference, so unable to bring the box. Liz LaRue will be driving, so she volunteered to bring the box along with any items we fill it with (theme: red, or heart-shaped). In the matter of Election of Officers, the slate was Kathi Meisel for President, Charles Parker for Vice-President, Jami Johnson for Secretary, and Cinda Towne for Treasurer. It was moved and seconded that we vote the slate, and all members voted their approval. Kathi Meisel suggested that we need an additional committee for Publicity, especially since we are celebrating our 50 th anniversary this year. Members would like to be able to put together a display of our work and something of our history. We'll be checking with the local libraries for display availability. Kathi asked members to be on the lookout for small square looms and stretchy loops, like the ones we used as children to weave simple potholders. We'd like to add some simple weaving to our children's demos. Members who worked the Bluegrass Festival reported that it was a big success. The day was perfect, we had lots of folks stop to watch us spin and weave, and the booth they gave us was nicely shaded. We've been invited to participate in Pioneer Days at Spring Mountain Ranch. See Kathi Meisel if you're interested in going. New member Sally Koebke volunteered to take over the Raffle. Janet Mayers will be taking over from Hermi as IWC representative. Show & Tell: Bev Fielder showed us a hatband decorated with smiling sheep that she wove for her sunhat. Jami Johnson wove some small towels to give to people on her fishing trip to Alaska, and showed us some souvenir socks she brought back. Hermi Hiatt showed us a scarf she wove for IWC, using tensel and recycled cashmere. She also had some tablet weavings of sheep. Janet Mayers showed us samples she wove in Daryl Lancaster's class, a shawl knitted from a blend of linen/cotton/metal, and her woven throws. Vicki Johnson showed us a felted purse she bought from Mirage Fiber Arts and then decorated, and a donated picture. Donna Young displayed some shibori ribbon jewelry she made. Bill Quill showed us the weaving from Daryl Lancaster's class, a silk scarf he wove, and a variety of scarves he wove using cotton, silk, and chenille. Pamm Spooner showed us towels she wove while experimenting with fibers and different wefts. She also showed off the shoes she was wearing, made of fabric she had woven. Marilyn MacMurtrie showed off a variety of silk and merino fibers ready for spinning that she bought at The Wool Store when she visited Oregon. Kathi Meisel showed some photos of bristlecone pine trees that she bought from a vendor at the Bluegrass Festival. She got permission to use them to create a bristlecone tapestry.

WORD PUZZLE By Bill Quill The answer to June s word puzzle is; In June we ended the WORD PUZZLE column with the three foreign words. Has anyone solved the puzzle? If not here is the answer to June s words chaine = warp (Sweden, page 150) trame = weft (France, page 67) bindung = weave (Germany, page72) Encyclopedia of Handweaving, Stanislaw A. Zielinski Welcome to the 2017/2018 year. How many of you solved the June puzzle? The puzzle word for September 2017 is; TENTERING It has nothing to do with setting up a tent or camping out.
