1 President s Message Ready Set Go! September 8th is just around the corner and I hope to see many of you at the meeting! Please come in the side doors of the museum on 7th Avenue. We will have people posted to make sure you can get in and we will be in a different room that day. We will have it well marked. I spent 5 days at the State Fair and we had a wonderful representation from AWSG. So far there have been 15 of us doing demos. I expect there will be more. It was good to see so many of you on the weekend - in spite of the rain and crowds. This is great momentum to start off our year. The board is busy getting things together for programs and workshops. We have equipment to rent, a library with lots of books, magazines and videos for learning. Contact information for all of this is on our website ( and on the last page of the newsletter! Watch for information on Study Groups and of course the Guild Challenge! Looking forward for an exciting year! Clydene Fitch, President ANCHORAGE WEAVERS & SPINNERS GUILD NEXT GATHERING: Saturday, September 8, September s Program Summer Show and Tell September 2012 Issue 7 Welcome back all fiber enthusiasts! Its been a while since we ve seen each other and I am sure we have all been working on a project or two over the summer. First grade may be only a memory, but the love of SHOW and TELL lives on! Each one of us is an artist in fiber and our September Show and Tell is a great source of inspiration and a celebration of each others talent. Please bring something you have been working on since our last meeting to share with us all. - It is our fiber version of What I did on my summer vacation -and it is so much fun! 34th Annual Arts & Crafts Emporium Show Date & Hours: Saturday November 17, :00AM-6:00PM Sunday November 18, :00AM-5:00PM Location: Dena ina Civic and Convention Center Admission: Free Arts & Crafts Emporium is Anchorage s Premier Showcase for Alaskan artists and crafters to display and sell their products during the holiday season. This festive event strives to provide the Anchorage community and its visitors with a FREE winter holiday show featuring a large variety of Alaska made arts and crafts, sold 1
2 by their creators, thereby enhancing the quality of life of Anchorage residents, visitors and vendors; to provide vendors with a low cost, premier location which affords them an opportunity to showcase and display their products to a broad base of consumers and potential customers; and add to the vitality of downtown Anchorage. Our guild will be participating in the Arts & Crafts Emporium. This is our opportunity to be a part of the community s premier winter holiday show and to share with the public what we do as a guild. You have an opportunity to sell items you have created and explain the creation of one of a kind art items allowing the customer to be more informed and more appreciative of the quality of craftsmanship we provide. Items submitted for sale must be handcrafted by a person residing in Alaska and the artist must have originated the product and seen it through to its completion. Although the event is well advertised in local media we all know word of mouth is our best marketing tool. Satisfied customers tell their friends and bring their friends next year. We have noticed repeat customers that return year after year and ask for certain items. Now is the time to gather together our items for the November sale. When you create an item make a second item to sell at the sale. Remember to keep track of materials used in each handmade item. You will need this information on tags for the customer. wool handspun, handknit scarves handwoven pot holders doll outfitted completely in handspun, handknit clothing handspun, dyed, knit Samoyed hat handspun neckwarmers handwoven, felted clutch purse pre-wound warp kits for handweavers nunofelt scarves handwoven eyeglass cases felted pincushions handspun yarns (also offerings of enough skeins for a project) hand dyed sock yarns handwoven ornaments handwoven pillows handwoven kitty mug rugs silk cocoon earrings linen purses/bags handspun, knit ponchos felt balls ALASKA STATE FAIR UPDATE Thanks to all our demonstrators at the Alaska State Fair and to Myler and Heather for their organization.
