1 Reed & Weave March 2017 Edition President s Message. Hello to all, I had a great time at our last meeting and I hope you did too. Robyn Spady is an amazing teacher and her presentation on 4-shaft patterns was wonderful. If you haven't had a chance to download her PDF, do so today. Or if for some reason you didn t receive it, let us know. From Integrated and Network Twills, Swivel and Turned Drafts, you have a wealth of information for your 4 shaft loom creations. I m taking another look at my towel designs for our challenge for the year. Speaking of our towel exchange, remember they will be due at our June Luncheon. Your towel designs are to be based on the piece of artwork you have chosen as your inspiration. I look forward to seeing all of your designs! We will be signing up for the Luncheon next meeting so that we know approximately how many members will be able to come. Remember, it is free to members and $10.00 for guests. Feel free to bring your friends, just let Janet Castro and Sallie Scanzoni know about your friends. We are lucky enough to be returning to Bill Kleese s home in Riverside for our big day. Plan to join us in June! Our near future looks exciting too. The March meeting has Antonio Mendoza returning to show us his work dyeing with cochineal. It is one of the most beautiful reds in the world! Antonio will tell us his story. If you want to read ahead about this amazing red bug, I suggest the very readable book, A Perfect Red by Amy Butler Greenfield. She discusses the history of this lovely color. I m sure the book will be a nice compliment to Antonio s presentation. Keep weaving, spinning, dyeing and creating! I know it will be a long walk, but necessary for the safety of everyone involved. 3 Robyn Spady Comes to Town Fifty members and guests were present to hear Robyn Spady give tips on using our four-shaft looms to their fullest potential. From turning a draft, to swivel, or scaling a threading or treadling sequence by telescoping and digitizing, to two weaves on four shafts, members were captivated by the many possibilities Robyn shared. 4 March 13, 2017 The tradition of weaving among the Zapotec Indians from the state of Oaxaca goes back more than 2,000 years. The glorious colors, imaginative designs and fine texture of their hand-spun tapestries are testament to the months and months of hard work it can take to complete just one rug or wall hanging. To dye 1 pound of yarn to a reddish hue, for instance, requires the larvae from about 700,000 cochineal insects plucked from the agave cactus. In the tiny village of Teotitlan del Valle, about 300 miles southwest of Mexico City, families toil in their homes, washing and carding the wool. Among them are the Mendozas, who have passed this tradition down for generations. ANTONIO IS COMING BACK! Back in Mexico, his brothers Taurino and Jeronimo and other family members are busy turning wool into yarn at the spinning wheel, cultivating the dyes that will be used and weaving. They all learned these crafts at an early age, but Antonio was the youngest to start. He was so eager, he asked his parents to teach him when he was only 7. Weaving requires skill and patience. The cactus beetle larvae, for instance, are left to dry in the sun for about four months. The shades of red are obtained by grinding them on a metate, a flat stone, and then mixing the powder with lime juice and salt and bringing it to a boil to make the dye. 5 2017 Guild Challenge 2017 IEHG Challenge!! Find a favorite piece of artwork. It can be a painting, sculpture, tapestry, mural, architecture, music, and so on... What is it about this piece of art that moves or inspires you? Is it the colors, textures, design elements, use of positive and negative space and so on... maybe even the subject matter. Pick your colors and weave structure to reflect your response to the art piece. We will do this as another towel exchange in June. This was such a fun event last June. Towels are not such a personal item that we can't all love each and everyone of them to use in our kitchen or other chosen location! In June you will have your picture and share your inspiration with the other luncheonettes as your towel is won!
