Visit Us on Facebook January Speaker Mattie Rhoades Haines TVQG is excited to welcome Mattie Rhoades Haines as our January guest speaker. Here is a little bit of information about Mattie: With the feeling that quilting should be fun, out-of-the-box thinking, and a desire for a creative challenge, Mattie started Quiltsmart in 1994 based on using printed fusible interfacing to make quilting easy with no curved or inset piecing! Between being a mom of 3 great young adults, and a new grandma, and running the business, she also loves traveling. She has taught the Quiltsmart methods in Germany, the Netherlands, Mexico, Spain, and around the United States. She also enjoys inline skating, quilting, sewing, paddle-boarding, playing scrabble, 4- day work weeks, and anything chocolate. Mattie and her husband Steve, (aka flannel-boy ) travel together giving quilting seminars, classes and retreats and enjoy delivering the message that quilting should be fun, and relaxing and with modern methods it can be! UFO Contest TVQG s UFO contest began in October 2017 and will conclude at the October 2018 meeting. If participating in this contest, bring your completed quilt to any general meeting and present it during the Show and Tell A drawing ticket will be issued for each completed quilt shown. So the more quilts you finish the better your chances are of winning the contest. HST Challenge Our Half Square Triangle (HST) Challenge is currently underway. Members accepting this challenge may create a quilt using any HST design or layout they choose. Finished Challenge Quilts will be presented in Feb 2018 and prizes will be awarded to three participants. Charity Quilter s Sew Day The next charity sew day will take place at the Sherwood Senior Center on Monday, February 5, 2018 starting at 10:00 am. Members, guests and local quilters are welcome to attend this open sewing day. If attending, please bring your sewing machine and basic sewing supplies. The charity sewing committee has a nice assortment of fabrics and batting available for our quilters to use for any charity quilting project. We look forward to your joining us. Page 1

2 Charity Updates WINGS One of the charities TVQG supports is WINGS. They offer formerly homeless young woman and their children of the Columbia Gorge Region everything they need to learn to be employable and sustainable including a home, work, training, continuing education, and support to young people between the ages of 18 and 23. Allison Pate of the WINGS program shared the following Wings 2017 Holiday newsletter with us. Page 2

Quilts of Valor The latest TVQG QOV quilt is nearing completion just a few more blocks and rows to go before it s sent off to the longarmer to be quilted.

TVQG hosts a monthly Quilts of Valor Sew Day. LoisMarie Mayer is our QOV Coordinator.

The January QOV sew day will take place January 6 th starting at 10:30 am at Ace Sew and Vac in Newberg, OR. Members and their friends are invited to attend all of our QOV Sew Days.

3 Quilts of Valor The latest TVQG QOV quilt is nearing completion just a few more blocks and rows to go before it s sent off to the longarmer to be quilted. We ll display the completed quilt at an upcoming TVQG General meeting and post pictures of our quilt in a future newsletter. TVQG s goal is to complete two Quilts of Valor quilts a year. Each month LoisMarie sends out a member-wide with details of the date, time and location for TQQG s monthly sew day. Sherwood Lions Club Peace Quilt Project In the September Newsletter, we included several pictures of individual quilt blocks members of our guild completed and donated to the Sherwood Lions Club Peace Quilt Project. The Sherwood Lions Club received quilt block donations through multiple sources including donations from the Muslim School in Beaverton, our guild, and Sherwood Senior Citizens. From these donations they were able to complete five quilts, many of which included the peace-themed quilt block that our members created. Peace Quilts are on display at multiple Sherwood Locations including the Sherwood Senior Center, Sherwood Cultural Center and the Sherwood Library. Here is a picture of the quilt that is hanging at the Sherwood Senior Center. Retreat Updates Oregon Gardens Our Oregon Gardens Retreat is Friday, March 16 th through Sunday, March 18 th. Quilters still can sign up to attend this retreat. If interested, contact Sue Brim at sue@brim.org. Reminder: Full payment for the Oregon Gardens retreat is due by the January 16 th TVQG General Meeting. Tilikum Lodge The Tilikum Lodge retreat is scheduled for April 26 th through April 30 th. We had a fantastic response from quilters wanting to attend our 10 th Anniversary Tilikum Quilt Retreat. Currently, this retreat is completely booked. If you are interested in attending, just in case we have any cancellations, see Betty Murphy or Virgie Karlson or send an to Friendship.Retreat@gmail.com to be placed on their Wait List. Final payment for folks attending the Tilikum retreat is due no later than April 1, Page 3

4 NEWSLETTER January 2018 Chehalem Park and Rec Quilters New Year s Resolutions TVQG would like to wish every one of our members a wonderful and fulfilling New Year. A couple of our members even submitted thoughts that quilters such as us might find useful: Your New Year s Resolutions Vow to Use Your Scraps (Even the Small Ones!) Get Rid of Unfinished Projects for Good Successfully Pair Fabrics from Your Stash Take a Stab at Quilting Your Project Get Creative with Your Quilt Labels Cover Every Bed with a Handmade Quilt Happy New Year, awesome quilters. Time for new things like: A new blade in your rotary cutter. If you are a Pinner and have not replaced them in a couple of years, it is time. If your ruler is more than 5 years old, time to replace as over time small slices of plastic are shaved off and you lose accurate cutting measurements. Plastic bobbins wear from use. Buy some new ones and retire the old ones. New needle in your machine is also in order. If your machine is newer, give it a good sweep out in the bobbin area and needle bar. If you use a FW, give her a spa day. Super clean the bobbin area, thread guides and a good greasing and oiling will make it purr. And a good wax in the body will make her shine. It s suggested that you use red, black, and white fabrics. We ll hold a drawing for the blocks at our January 16th meeting. Instructions to make this block are available in the members-only section of our website at and have been included at the end of this newsletter. We received the following message from a fellow quilter: Hello--I'm hoping you can help me find a new home for a truly like new longarm.

I'd only begun to practice with it when I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Most of the time I've owned the longarm I've been in the hospital, in treatments, or in recovery mode.

Ideally, I'd like to sell the set up at a fair "used" price. If that proves too difficult, I'm willing to donate it to a worthy cause. I also have a dozen or so rulers and accessories.

I purchased a new HQ Sixteen and Little Foot frame in the fall of It has hours on it. It genuinely is in excellent, new condition. I'd only begun to practice with it when I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. Most of the time I've owned the longarm I've been in the hospital, in treatments, or in recovery mode. Sadly, the cancer is spreading fast and I need to wrap things up. I'd like to find a home for this longarm so that does not become a burden for my husband to deal with. Ideally, I'd like to sell the set up at a fair "used" price. If that proves too difficult, I'm willing to donate it to a worthy cause. I also have a dozen or so rulers and accessories.
