Bod-i-Bag Introduction:! Thanks for your interest in the Bod-i-Bag by Alpinlite. The Bod-i-Bag started off as a simple fleece sleeping bag liner. Then I had a thought, Why not add a hole at the feet so that I can get up and walk around? Then, Hmm... Should probably add some arm holes so I don"t tumble over! The Bod-i-Bag continues to evolve from enthusiastic input from users. If you have any suggestions or feedback please send me an at: info@alpinlite.com.! I make this set of plans and instructions available for free to whoever wants them. Experimentation with the design and materials is strongly encouraged. There is no exact science here. When you"re making your Bod-i-Bag please make adjustments as you go to #custom tailor" your Bod-i-Bag to your unique body type.! I hope that you"ll share your experiences and contribute to the evolution of the Bod-i-Bag. Thank you! 2 Making the Front Pocket Skip this section if you do not want a front pocket! The front pocket is a mesh pocket with a zippered top and fleece back. Use it to store small items like a headlamp while you sleep and warm your hands behind the pocket when it"s chilly. What you will need: 1, Mesh (PM) 1, Fleece (FP) 1, Zipper (ZP) 2, Edging Tape (TP) The Instructions: Start by rolling the top edge of the Mesh (MP) over twice, about 1/2 each time. Sew a straight stitch (yellow dots) about 3/8 from the top edge of the Mesh. With the outer surface of the mesh facing up, place the rolled edge of the mesh over the bottom edge of the zipper tape (ZP) (orientation of the zipper is up to you). Run a straight stitch (yellow dots) 1/16-1/8 below the zipper teeth to join the zipper tape to the top of the mesh pocket. Version 2.1, Released ! 2

Run a second stitch towards the outside of the zipper tape. To better secure the zipper to the mesh, run another stitch or two between the first two. Now it"s time to attach the fleece (FP) to the zipper tape. The fleece will be the back face of the pocket. Lay the mesh/zipper right side up on top of the fleece, The fleece should also be right side up. Pin the free side of the zipper tape to the fleece. Run a straight stitch (yellow dots) about 1/8 from the zipper teeth. It is not necessary to further secure the zipper at this time Trim any excess zipper tape. Get out the two pieces of edging tape (TP), fold the top edge over and sew a straight stitch with a 1/4 seam allowance (about a 1/4 from the fold). This is the top edge in the next step. Version 2.1, Released ! 3

With the mesh facing up, lay the edging tape along the vertical edge of the pocket. The back/wrong side of the edging tape should be facing up. The top of the edging tape should line up with the zipper teeth. Sew a straight stitch approx. 7/16 from the edge (yellow dots). Flip the pocket over and fold the edging tape so it wraps around to the backside of the pocket. Pin in place. With the mesh facing up, sew one or two straight stitches (yellow dots) as close to the inside edge of the edging tape as you can while making sure your sewing into the edging tape on the backside of the pocket. Be careful here, it is easy to #miss# the edging tape on the backside. Repeat the above steps as necessary to install the edging tape on the opposite side. That!s it for the pocket for now! Trim any excess fleece from the bottom and top edges. That is, up to the mesh on the bottom and up to the zipper tape on the top. Version 2.1, Released ! 4

Installing the front zipper The front zipper makes it easier to put on and take off the Bod-i-Bag. It"s also good for venting should things get too hot. For those who are super concerned about minimizing weight, the zipper can be skipped. If you haven"t installed a zipper before, you may want to search online for more detailed instructions or practice first. Your sewing machine"s manual may also provide advice. What you"ll need: 1, Zipper (ZF) 1, Fleece (FBF) 1, Small scrap of fleece The Instructions: Lay the bottom of your zipper (ZF) on a scrap piece of fleece. The right sides (outsides) should be together. Sew across the width of the zipper tape about 1/2 above the bottom of the zipper. Fold the fleece over so the wrong/back side of both the zipper and fleece are facing up. Sew a straight stitch (yellow dots) down each of the free ends of the zipper tape. The finished #bottom-of-zipper" as viewed from back. Version 2.1, Released ! 5

If you haven"t already, cut the fleece (FBF) where the zipper will be installed. With the right sides together, pin the zipper in place as shown. The top stop on the zipper should be just below the top edge of the fleece. Sew a straight stitch (yellow dots) to the outside of the zipper teeth. You probably have a zipper foot for your sewing machine to help Pin the other side of the zipper tape to the fleece as appropriate and sew a straight stitch mirroring the one you just made. Check to make sure you have everything in the right place (aka not backwards) before doing this! Version 2.1, Released ! 6

At the top of the zipper tape, fold the overhanging portion over the fleece and bar-tack it in place. With the zipper zipped, and the right side facing up, finish installing the zipper by sewing a straight on each side of the zipper and about 3/8 from the zipper teeth (close to the outside of the zipper tape). You!re finished with the zipper! Version 2.1, Released ! 7

Attaching the Front Pocket If you"ve opted for the front pocket, now is a good time to attach it to the body of your Bod-i-Bag. If you"re foregoing the pocket, skip this set of instructions. What you"ll need: 1, Front Pocket made earlier 1, Fleece (FBF) The Instructions: Fold the pocket in half vertically and mark the midpoints at the top and bottom of the pocket. With the right side (outside) of the fleece facing up, lay the pocket with the wrong side (backside) facing up. Line up the midpoint at the top of the pocket so that it is slightly below the end of the zipper installed in the fleece. Line up the midpoint at the bottom of the pocket with the zipper so that the centerline of the pocket runs along the length of the zipper. Version 2.1, Released ! 8

Run a straight stitch (yellow dots) along the top edge of the pocket. This should be close to the stitches holding the pocket zipper to the fleece part of the pocket (black dots). Be careful not to sew into the zipper teeth between the two layers of fleece. Also be careful as you approach the midpoint. The bottom stop of the #neck zipper" is nearby and you don"t want to accidentally hit it with your needle! Sew a second stitch below the first. The zipper tape for the pocket"s zipper should be sandwiched in there between the two layers of fleece and you should be sewing into the zipper tape near its outer edge. Fold the pocket over so that the outside of the pocket faces up. The pocket should now be in its final position. Version 2.1, Released ! 9

Fold the bottom 1/2 of the pocket over and pin in place. Attach the bottom edge of the pocket with two straight stitches I like to turn the bottom corners and sew up the sides for about an inch but this is not necessary. Your pocket is finished! Version 2.1, Released ! 10

Making the Sleeves - Long Sleeve Long sleeves add warmth and comfort to your Bod-i-Bag. If you want to save weight, or only plan to use your Bod-i-Bag on warmer nights, you can skip the long sleeves and follow the instructions for making a #vest style" Bod-i-Bag. What you"ll need: 2, Fleece (FSU) 2, Fleece (FSL) 2, Edging Tape (TW) The Instructions: You should have four pieces of fleece in front of you to make a pair of sleeves. I will describe the steps to make one sleeve. Repeat for the other... With the right sides together, pin one long edge of the upper sleeve pattern (FSU) to the lower sleeve pattern (FSL). Make sure the wider end of FSL is matched up with the widest part of FSU. Sew a straight stitch along the pinned edge with a 1/4 allowance (about 1/4 from the edge). With the right sides together, sew the edging tape to the wrist end of the sleeve. Use a 3/8 allowance and stretch the tape to match the sleeve as you go. If your machine allows, you may want to use the stretch setting. Note in the picture that I!m making a mistake and am sewing the right side of the tape to the wrong side of the sleeve! Version 2.1, Released ! 11

Fold the sleeve in half, right sides together. Sew the edge of the sleeve as you did in the second step, this time including the edging tape. What you end up with should be an inside-out sleeve. With the sleeve right-side-out, fold the edging tape over so that it wraps around the edge of the sleeve. Pin it in place often, about every 1/2. Pinning often helps ensure the tape doesn"t slip out of place in the next step. Sew a straight stitch along the inner edge of the edging tape, about 1/16 from the inner edge. Check to make sure you are sewing into the edging tape on the other side. Keep the wrist opening stretched as you go or use the stretch setting on your machine. Finish the seams on the sleeves by running a zig-zag stitch off the edge of the fabric. Sleeves are done! Version 2.1, Released ! 12

The Body In these steps you put the two halves of the Bod-i-Bag together to form the body section. What you"ll need: 1, Fleece (FBF) 1, Fleece (FBB) 1, Packcloth, (R) The Instructions: With the right sides together, pin the fleece patterns along the long edges. Make sure the top (curved part) of each pattern is on the same end as the top of the other pattern! Sew a straight stitch with a 1/4 seam allowance along each of the 2 long edges. Finish the seams by sewing a zig-zag stitch off the edge of the fabric. Near one of these seams, add a button hole starting about 2 from the bottom edge and about 3/8 long. Use the packcloth (PC) to reinforce the buttonhole on the inside. Fold the bottom 1-1/2 of fabric in towards the inside of the body (wrong sides together). Sew twice along the edge to form a tube. This is where the bottom drawcord will go. Use the stretch setting on your machine or stretch the fabric as you sew to avoid breaking the thread when putting on the Bod-i-Bag. The main body is finished! Version 2.1, Released ! 13

Attaching the Long Sleeves If you made some long sleeves now is the time to attach them to the body. If you"re making the vest style Bod-i-Bag skip to the next step. What you"ll need: 1, Body 2, Sleeves The Instructions: Start with the sleeves right side out and the body inside out. Slip the sleeve into the body. The right sides should be together. Pin the edges together so that only the small #V" at the top of the sleeve is left raw. One end of the V should line up with the line you marked on FBF. The other end of the V should line up with the corner on the back piece of the body. Sew a straight stitch with a 1/4 seam allowance. Finish with a zigzag stitch sewn off the edge of the fabric. Repeat for the other sleeve. Your sleeves are attached! Version 2.1, Released ! 14

Making the Sleeves - Vest Style If you made long sleeves, skip this step. What you"ll need: 2, Fleece (FV) 1, Body The Instructions: Start with the body inside out. Take a look at the small piece of fleece which will end up covering your shoulder (FV). It is symmetrical with a V on one end and a curve on the opposite end. The two other curved edges are what get attached to the body. Pin these edges to the body piece so that the right sides are together. Look for the marks you made on the body pieces to position the shoulder piece. Sew a straight stitch with a 1/4 allowance along the two pinned edges. Finish the seams by sewing a zigzag stitch off the edge of the fabric. Finish the arm opening by folding the edge of the fabric towards the inside and securing with a wide stretch stitch. Your vest style is done! Version 2.1, Released ! 15

Making the Hood Making the last piece - the hood! What you"ll need: 2, Fleece (FH) 1, Fleece (FHS) The Instructions: Line up one end of the strip, FS with the bottom back part of one of the hood pieces, FH. With the right sides together, sew a straight stitch from #a" to #b" with a 1/4 allowance. Flatten this seam by running a wide zig-zag or stretch stitch over it. Repeat on the other side of the strip with the other piece of the hood. Pin the rest of the strip to the curved part of the hood stopping at the corner of the hood piece. Sew a straight stitch from #b" to #c" with a 1/4 allowance and finish it with a zigzag stitch sewn off the edge of the fabric. Find the two shorter straight edges (d). Fold the fabric towards the inside and secure with a stitch about 1/4 from the fold. Now you need to make the tube where the drawstring will go. To do this fold about 1/2 of the fabric along the appropriate edge to the inside and stitch along the edge to form the tube. Have you tried it on yet? Version 2.1, Released ! 16

Attaching the Hood Your Bod-i-Bag is nearing completion! All that"s left is attaching the hood and some finishing touches. What you"ll need: Hood Body The Instructions: Pin the edge of the hood to the line you have marked on the front body piece, FBF, from #a" to #b". Make sure the right sides are together (the hood should be upside-down). Sew a straight stitch along the line from #a" to #b" with a 1/4 allowance from the edge of the hood. Repeat for the other side of the hood. The following steps are easiest done with the body inside-out and the hood pushed into the body so it is upside-down. Whatever way you do this, just make sure the right sides of the fabric are together and nothing is backwards or twisted up. Making sure the right sides are still together, pin the rest of the hood to the neck opening of the body. First line up the back-middle of the hood with the back-middle of the opening. Work your way around to the front. Use the #V" notch in the sleeve to compensate for any discrepancy in length. Using a straight stitch and a 1/4 seam allowance, sew the edge you just pinned. Finish the seam by sewing a zigzag stitch off the edge of the seam. Version 2.1, Released ! 17

Finish the seam with a zigzag stitch sewn off the edge of the fabric. With the Bod-i-Bag right side out, sew the #mouth" part of the hood in place next to the zipper So close! Version 2.1, Released ! 18

Finishing Touches All that"s left to do is to install the drawcords! What you"ll need: 1, DCH 1, DCF 3, CL 1, Bod-i-Bag 1, Coat hanger, Bobby pin or other stiff wire/rod Take the shorter drawcord and install it in the hood. The easiest way to do this is to tape one end of the drawcord to a stiff rod about 5 long and thread it through. A section of a coat hanger or a straightened out bobby pin will work well for this. The Instructions: Install one cordlock (2 total) on each end of the drawcord and knot the ends so they won"t pull through the cordlocks in the future. Take the longer drawcord and install it at the foot opening. Install one cordlock at the ends of the drawcord and knot the ends together so they won"t pull through the cordlock in the future. (Optional) Bartack the mid-point of each drawcord in place. FINISHED! Version 2.1, Released ! 19
