1 BUDDY THE T-REX COSTUME DIRECTIONS FOR SUIT CONSTRUCTION SIZE: SMALL (5) Height: Weight: 40-45lbs. Shoe size 11 What you need: Notes Fabric 2 yards, 60 wide, orange fleece for body, hood and feet. ¼ yard blue fleece for decorative diamonds. 1/8 yard brown ultra suede or 1 square felt for soles of feet. 1 square white felt for toenails. 14 orange zipper. ¾ yard of ¼ elastic. 4 of 1 wide sew-in Velcro. 1 package of ½ double-fold orange bias tape. Fiberfill for tail, about ¼ of a bag. Thread, orange and blue to match fleece. Follow directions on pattern pieces. All pattern pieces include a ½ seam allowance except Foot pattern, which is ¼. Note that hood front is placed on fold. All blue diamond placement is marked on patterns. Blue diamonds are cut out of blue fleece. Soles of feet can be cut from ultra suede or felt. Toenails cut out of white felt. Topstitch in pattern directions means stitching using a zig-zag or a straight stitch, depending upon your sewing machine. Instructions: CF Center Front CB Center Back Step 1. Cut out the pattern pieces for the suit, hood and feet from orange fleece. Cut out blue diamonds from blue fleece. Step 2. 2 Sew CF seam from circle-mark to end. Sew zipper into CF of suit with right side overlapping. CF can also be finished by sewing Velcro onto each side for closure. Step 3. Sew CB seam leaving opening in seam for tail as marked. Place blue diamonds on CB of suit as marked and topstitch. Step 4. Tail A. Sew top seam of tail, trim to 1/4 and lay flat. Place blue diamonds on tail as marked over this seam and topstitch (the same as back of suit). B. Stitch lower seam, trim seam and turn right side out. Stuff with fiberfill to desired firmness; should be plumb but flexible. Sew the end seams together to hold fiberfill in place, and place into the marked opening in the CB seam of suit. Use a zipper foot to stitch this seam. This will allow you to get as close as possible to the stuffed tail seam to hold into place. Step 5. With right sides together, sew shoulder seams. Trim to ¼. Step 6. Finish the neck edge with ½ orange bias tape. Step 7. Sleeves With right sides together, sew sleeves into suit matching notches. Trim to ¼. Step 8. With right sides together, sew side seams and underarm seams, matching notches and underarm seam. Trim to ¼. Step 9. Hem legs by turning ¾ up and topstitch. Step 10. Mitts A. Hem wrist edge of one side of mitt, turning up ½ and topstitch. B. Place mitts right side together and stitch around edge leaving wrist open. Reinforce stitching line at clip point then trim to ¼ and clip to circle as marked. C. Turn right side out, stitch raw edge of mitt to sleeve, matching notches. Hemmed side of mitt will be open. Small thumb should be toward body. D. Cut 3 of elastic; sew each end to elastic marks on sleeve hem. The elastic will go over the sleeve seam. The Jim Henson Company. 3 E. Turn hem on open side of sleeve and topstitch around sleeve bottom, catching seam from stitched part of mitt. When you stitch, pull elastic. This will gather in sleeve on lower side of wrist. You should have an opening that will allow child s hand to go into mitt, and also come out of mitt with mitts still attached to suit. Now the suit should be done! Step 11. Hood A. Stitch CB seam. B. Stitch dart in CF. C. Finish face edge and CF with ½ bias tape, turn and topstitch. D. It s easier to topstitch the blue diamonds onto back of hood before you stitch front and back together. So do this, matching diamonds to marked spots. Stitch front diamond to front of hood. The #2 diamond on the hood front should be topstitched after you stitch the hood front to hood back. This diamond can go over the seam slightly. E. Hem the hood by turning ½ up and topstitching. F. Sew Velcro onto CF as marked overlapping right over left. This can be done by topstitching or by hand stitching. Step 12. Feet *This is the only part of the suit with ¼ seam allowance! *The sole of the foot can be ultrasuede or felt. (Felt will be more slippery) The foot can be worn with shoes or not. Toenails are cut from white felt. A. Stitch CF and CB seam on foot. B. Toenails should be stitched to tongue as marked or can be hand-sewn in after foot is complete. C. Stitch tongue to foot, matching CF seam to notch on tongue and elastic mark lines. Catch the toenails into this seam. D. Turn ¼ hem at top of foot and topstitch. E. Stitch sole to foot matching CF and CB notches on sole to CF and CB seams. Turn right side out. F. Cut 7 of elastic. Mark in half. Pin both ends to CB seam and half-way mark to mark on tongue at elastic line on inside of foot. Topstitch elastic onto elastic line stretching elastic to fit. This will gather in ankle. G. Do this for both feet. And you re ready to board the Dinosaur Train! All aboard! The Jim Henson Company.
