2 THE GREEK PULSE! PAGE 2 Brothers Dan Miska, Marcus Howell, Michael Aboukhaled, Roger Patterson, Dan Clunies, Tony DeSimone, Dan Holloway and Friend Molly Gore By Zohare Kahn! On the weekend of August 16-17, 2008 the Ohio Beta Rho chapter of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity entered a team and joined 2034 other bicyclists on the Pedal to the Point, a two day 150 mile bicycle ride to and from Berea and Sandusky, OH. The purpose of the ride was to raise funds to combat Multiple Sclerosis. The number of people living with MS increases every hour of every day. This astonishing rate is not going to diminish, nor will it stop, until a cure has been found. Research has made incredible advances recently, but the world can still only offer disease management drugs and therapies to the 400,000 people living with MS in America, including more than 18,000 Ohioans.!! The ATO s formed a team, because they knew that riding 150 miles is nowhere as difficult as confronting a lifetime with Multiple Sclerosis. While they rode for all those suffering from this disease, they specifically rode for the Pedal to the Point with Alpha Tau Omega! wives of two alums and the sister of another.! The team consisted of current brothers/students Michael Aboukhaled 09, Dan Clunies 10, Tony DeSimone 09, Molly Gore 10, Dan Holloway 09, and Marcus Howell 10. In addition they were joined by alumni Dan Miska 97 and Roger Patterson 62.! The team was highlighted by Brother Dan Clunies, who chose to make the ride on a unicycle, rather than a traditional bicycle.! Friday evening prior to the ride, the team had a pre-ride pasta dinner with two Cleveland area alums Rich Hart 78 and Rich Boening 78.! As of September 1, 2008, the team has raised $6100. Donations are being accepted until September 30, Donations have been received from alums as a result of an article in the chapter newsletter and fund-raising by both members of the team and nonriding brothers. Brother Dan Holloway and Dan Mikas ATO plans to make Pedal to the Point a significant annual philanthropy involving both active and alumni members of the fraternity.

5 THE GREEK PULSE! PAGE 5 Chi Gamma Around the World Summer Adventures from the Ladies of Chi Omega By Leanne McCullough This summer, Megan McGrath, Shelby Belknap, and Tara Kurilchick traveled to St. Louis, MO for the biannual Chi Omega Convention. At the Convention, themed Gateway to Sisterhood, the Marietta girls made connections with Chi O s from across the country. Even though the girls got trapped at the top of the Gateway Arch for two hours, the trip was not ruined. At the Award s Luncheon, the Chi Gamma Chapter received an Award of Achievement. This award recognizes chapter s that show excellence in the Fraternity s six purposes: friendship, career development, community service, high standards of personnel, sincere learning and credible scholarship, and participation in campus activities.! Leanne McCullough spent her second summer in the Nations Capitol, this time as an intern in the Ohio Senator s Office of George V. Voinovich. Leanne spent 7 weeks researching legislation, attending briefings and hearings, and making valuable networking connections. She was able to attend presentations by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, Former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and ABC news analyst Cooke Roberts. In her spare time, Leanne was able to tour the Pentagon, the White House, and watch the Congressional Republicans beat the Congressional Democrats in the annual baseball game.! Diana Hackenburg was thousands of miles away from Ohio this summer, in Winthrop, Washington interning for the non-profit organization; Pacific Biodiversity Institute. Diana had many tasks, including vegetation mapping and GIS-GPS mapping in Washington s numerous State Parks. She was also able to assist in a beaver relocation project. On the weekends, Diana continued to explore Washington by climbing mountains, rafting, boating, and having encounters with bears and coyotes. Of describing the life changing experience, Diana said Don t be afraid to climb mountains literally, because the view from the top will take your breath away.! Gwen Chamberlain, Jackie Hartle, Shelby Belknap, Katie Rinaldo, and Emily Davis Continued on Page 6 Below Diana Hackenburg at the Pacific Biodiversity Institute
