These nine new brothers enjoyed a six week period of pledge ship in which pledge educators Ben Jeon and Roger Blanco taught them the history of the fraternity, including how to live by the creed and as an eventual brother of the Illinois Delta Chapter. 2 During the pledge ship process the new brothers became acquainted with the chapter house and active brothers. They also got to know their fellow pledge brothers forming lifelong bonds and gaining friends that will support them throughout their college career and later in life. Following their initiation, the 21.5s had nearly a month as active members in the chapter socializing and studying with brothers while even participating in chapter elections throughout the end of the semester. Our new brothers are now enjoying their long summer break before they return to Illinois Delta in the Fall for another exciting school year. The 21.5s following initiation 2

3 Scholarship Winners By: Jake Bohn Outstanding Phi Psi This scholarship is awarded in recognition of those brothers who go above and beyond what is required of a member. This scholarship is for someone who improves the house by being involved with many house events and being a brother that demands respect through their extraordinary character. This year s recipient of the Outstanding Phi Psi scholarship is chapter president Grant Lee Culp. Renaissance Man This scholarship is given to an undergraduate brother of the Illinois Delta chapter who positively impacts the chapter in many ways. This person must also strive for excellence in many aspects of their everyday lives. This year s recipient is Sean Luo. Neo Scholarship This scholarship is awarded to a newly initiated brother of the chapter who, in their short time as a brother, has already had a positive impact on the chapter, and believe the fraternity has had a positive impact on him. This year s recipient of the Neo scholarship is freshman Jake Leahy. 3

4 Scholastic Achievement This scholarship is awarded to brothers who make the use of their time at the University wisely and pursue scholastic excellence as well as striving to always improve. Also the scholarship is for those brothers who help others with their studies. This year s scholastic achievement winner is Alex Sulek. Stephen Acheson Service Scholarship This scholarship is meant to recognize brothers who make use of their talents and faculties, strengthen them where they are weak and develop the traits of character that will be beautifully enjoined upon them throughout their life. This brother effortlessly combines academics, fraternal spirit, community and campus involvement, representing the ideals and creed of our Fraternity in all that they do. This year s winner is Niko Diamantopoulos. 4

5 Illini Marathon By: Grant Lee Culp I decided to start training for my first marathon to challenge and prove to myself that I was capable of doing it. I started to read about the benefits of doing hard things in life and I wanted to try and do something hard. With only one more year left in college I decided to stop telling myself that it was not a good time to start training. I started training in December 2017 and was able to run in the Illinois marathon which takes place at the end of April I was not very satisfied with my time during my marathon finishing in 4 hours and 6 mins. The biggest challenge I faced was living in a fraternity house and trying to train for a marathon which requires a little more sleep and better quality food. GLC running in the Illinois Marathon 5

6 A couple weeks later I decided to participate in a halfmarathon in Chicago finishing in 1 hour and 46 mins. I was a little more satisfied with this time but I was hoping to break GLC running in the Chicago Half-Marathon enough time the last 2 miles. 1:45 but just could not make up Looking forward I will definitely be competing in another marathon to score a better time. But, I always want to be challenging myself to find a new challenge and not get stuck in a routine of doing the same thing. Long term, I would love to complete an ultra-marathon and eventually a 100-mile race. 6

7 Summer Internship Spotlight By: Josh Balon My name is Josh Balon and I am a rising junior of the Illinois Delta chapter of Phi Kappa Psi. I am currently studying Finance with a minor in Informatics. This summer I am interning at Eby-Brown, the largest privately owned wholesale distributor in the U.S. Eby-Brown acts as the middle man between suppliers and Josh Balon convenient stores. They also provide convenient stores with planograms so they can more efficiently sell their products. This summer I am working in the Finance department and will be constructing various financial models to keep track of our company's performance. So far I have been researching our different competitors and looking at their financial statements. I then take the information I find and build graphs and tables comparing measures such as gross profit between the selected companies. After I graduate, I am looking at a career in financial analysis. Interning at Eby-Brown this summer gives me a great opportunity to learn and will be a big step in my professional career. 7

8 Summer Internship Spotlight By: Chris Kraemer This will be my second summer interning with Deloitte. This process began my second semester of my freshman year when I attended one day job shadows with Deloitte, PwC, and KPMG at their corporate offices. These job shadows along with networking help from my business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, helped me land job interviews with EY, PwC, and Deloitte and eventual internship offers. In the end, I took Deloitte s offer in the San Francisco office. My internship last summer was called the Pioneer Internship which was a rotational intern program where I would intern in different service lines of the company. 9 This program is geared specifically towards freshman in college. My rotation was between international tax and the information technology service lines. Along with this I had one-week training sessions in Atlanta and at Deloitte University in Dallas. The internship was a great experience and helped me figure out what service lines I may be interested in the future. 10 This summer I will be returning to the San Francisco office for Deloitte s sophomore program called the Discover Internship. Like the Pioneer Internship it is a rotational program, however the internship lasts two weeks longer and I will be interning in different service lines. I will Chris celebrating a summer with Deloitte be interning in the service lines of Audi & Assurance and Financial & Risk Advisory. I am mainly interested in the Advisory field which is basically consulting, and I am looking to do either financial or tech consulting as a full-time internship in the future. 10
