2 P A G E 2 Greek Week 2010:Greeks Celebrate ONE Earth Greek Week 2010 Winners: 1st Place: Alpha Delta Pi, Sigma Chi and Phi Gamma Delta 2nd Place: Delta Gamma, Sigma Nu, And Sigma Delta Tau 3rd Place: Alpha Epsilon Pi, Phi Mu, and PIKE This year for Greek Week 2010, we introduced some new and exciting elements. A major change that was made was the installment of making teams with all of the Greek organizations on campus. In the past, it has been every organization in IFC, Panhellenic and NPHC out for themselves but to introduce a more unified Greek system, teams were chosen at random. Through out the week, there was an array of activities for the teams to participate in including a new event added at the swimming pool. We extended the week by starting it off Sunday with a service day at Wannamaker Park where we helped clean up. The next few days were filled with athleticism by showing off mighty bowling skills Monday night, swimming technique and agility Tuesday night, and how well you can balance yourself on a pair of skates Wednesday night. ZTA Ladies serve up Earth By Thursday, everyone was ready to be able to relax, eat and be entertained with the Greek bake-off and cook-off accompanied with Greek Idol. Our singers this year showcased an array of songs that had to feature the word world in either the chorus or song title. The support from the crowd was wonderful and just as much support was shown in the CofC vs. Wofford baseball on Friday night were the Greeks partook on some free Sticky Fingers graciously given by the athletic department. With all of these wonderful events and great turn out we were sad to see the week close after the Borelli awards at the Greek BBQ. The results of the winners of the entire week were extremely close with the top three teams being within four points of each other. The winners for these years Greek Week was the team consisting of FIJI, Alpha Delta Pi, and Sigma Chi. We only hope Greek Week is as successful next year it was this year! Greek Week 2010 Winners! Banner Winners! Greek Leaders Honored at SALA Awards nity were recognized at the awards ceremony:shayla Bellamy, Alicia Bouie, John Capelle, Beaux Carriere, Elliot Dickerson, Brittany Graham, Joe Kampman, Sam Kastan, Jake Keller, Mary Tyler McNider, Brettica Moody, Kaitlin Przez- Each year, the Higdon Student Leadership Center honors those CofC students that have excelled academically and in leadership at the SALA Awards (Student Activism and Leadership Awards). 3 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 2 Panhellenic Council News P A G E 3 The spring semester was a very busy semester for the women of the Panhellenic council. We started off the semester with welcoming Delta Gamma to our campus and helping them recruit over 140 fabulous women to their organization. Our members participated in Dance Marathon and helped with the Charleston Miracle League. Eight of the women on the executive board traveled to Atlanta for the Southeastern Panhellenic Conference where they learned many new ideas about strengthening and bettering our Greek community. Panhellenic also participated in the annual Greek Week festivities and Pan-Hellenic Executive Board helped to collect supplies for Crisis Ministries. Some major changes were made in regards to our upcoming sorority recruitment in August. We will be hosting the majority of recruitment off-campus at the Francis Members at SEPC in Atlanta, GA. Marion Hotel and Embassy Suites and will be beginning the formal recruitment process before classes start. Our new dates for recruitment will be August and August Overall, the women of Panhellenic were very busy both on-campus and in the Charleston community. It was a successful semester and we are hopeful that the fall semester will be as much as a success. Interfraternity Council News The Inter Fraternity Council kicked off the spring semester with the annual Spring Rush Cook-off. Sigma Phi Epsilon took home the trophy for the second year in a row. Including the Spring Rush Cook-off, the Council hosted three rush events this semester. The other events were a very successful informational meeting in the Stern Center Ballroom and the school wide tailgate for the Cougars basketball game against Wofford College. The basketball tailgate was one of the first events sponsored by the Inter Fraternity Council for the entire school; this encouraged the council to put on a baseball tailgate as well. The baseball tailgate was held on April 3 rd when the Cougars took on Georgia Southern. Over one hundred and fifty fans came out to give the Cougars their support. IFC 2010 CookOff Winners-SigEp Other events included the Inter Fraternity Council Racquetball tournament and for the second semester in a row the council sponsored an event during Cougar Countdown. In other news, the Inter Fraternity Council has added two new Chapters to its community with the chartering of Phi Gamma Delta on March 27 th and Sigma Alpha Epsilon on April 24 th. Also with the colonization of Phi Kappa Tau on March 25 th, there will now be eleven Fraternities on campus heading into rush this fall. IFC expects to have a very successful recruitment and with the addition of these new fraternities our numbers should drastically begin to increase. National Pan-Hellenic Council News Spring 2010 has been an exciting semester for NPHC. The visibility on campus has increased tremendously. We all would like to welcome our new members of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. to our NPHC family. During the spring semester, we hosted events such as Battle of the Party walks, Pretty Rhomantic Dating Show, and the weeklong festivities during Kappa Beach Week. With a new executive board in place now for the next school year, we are enthused, motivated, and anticipating a great upcoming year. Our goals for next year are to utilize the NPHC house, collaborate more amongst ourselves and other councils, and to be a support system to the underclassman and non-greek students. Look out for NPHC during Welcome Back Week as we host NPHC Open House August 27, 2010 and Meet the Greeks August 28, This is going to be a year that the College of Charleston will never forget. The true meaning of NPHC will be displayed throughout our organizations during the school year. NPHC Members at Banquet 2010

4 P A G E 4 Welcome to the Neighborhood-Phi Kappa Tau and Omega Psi Phi! Since 2007, CofC s Greek community has welcomed on five national organizations (Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Delta Gamma, Phi Kappa Tau, Omega Psi Phi). This substantial growth has increased our total Greek membership to 16% from 11% in Greek Life continues to grow as we welcome 2 new fraternities to join our community. On March 17, Phi Kappa Tau was officially colonized at The College when the IFC voted to invite them to join the fraternity community. These young men have hit the ground running and are busy working on establishing their leadership skills as well as identifying new members. Saron Woodworth, Colony president, is eager and excited to be a part of this growing and welcoming environment. NPHC will also welcome back Omega Psi Phi fraternity next semester. Two new members joined the group in April and are also looking forward to officially re-instating in the fall. The Office of Greek Life would like to congratulate and welcome these new groups to campus. Spring 2010 Chapter Highlights Greeks on the Web: CHECK OUT OUR NEW WEBSITE Recently launched at You can also get your Greek on at Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Delta Gamma were all officially chartered and installed by their national organizations this semester at CofC! Congrats! SigEp s Folly Beach Classic Volleyball Tournament held in April raised over $2200 for the Roper St. Francis Cancer Center. Sigma Chi and the Panhellenic Sororities raised over $25, 000 for MUSC Children s Hospital during this year s Derby Days events. Kappa Delta raised over $27, 000 during the Shamrock Golf Tournament benefitting Darkness to Light and Prevent Child Abuse America. Members of different Greek organizations attended the Alternative Spring Break trip to the Dominican Republic and worked with a local orphanage. Great Job, Greeks! cofcgreeklife Greeks Take it to the Extreme with New Book Club And don't forget about our Facebook fan page! This spring semester our office was pleased to host an Extreme Leadership Book Club for our community leaders. The book club was voluntary and we were happy to have 20 students who signed up and participated. We read The Radical Leap and The Radical Edge by Steve Farber, meeting to discuss each book separately. The students who participated really enjoyed reading the books and the discussions that we engaged in about the ideas of how to take the Radical LEAP (Cultivate Love, Generate Energy, Inspire Audacity, and Provide Proof) and change the world were truly inspiring. The students discussed how to apply this concept not only to their own lives but also to their organizations to help make our Greek community at the College even stronger. The book club served as a great way to bring together our student leaders and engage in some great conversations about leadership, growth and change which we believe will not only benefit our community but also help prepare the students as they go out into the world to be better citizens and leaders. We look forward to continuing the book club in the future and getting more students engaged in reading and discussions. 5 V O L U M E 1, I S S U E 2 P A G E 5 Miss CofC Meagan Orton Heads to Miss South Carolina Charleston native and enthusiastic member of ZTA, Meagan Orton was surprised when she was crowned Miss College of Charleston in November as an inexperienced pageant girl. She was nominated by her chapter on a whim and reluctantly accepted the honor and did not think she could measure up to the competition. Since gaining her title as Miss CofC, Meagan has been working hard to represent The College, Greek Life, the city of Charleston; and will represent all of these groups in June when she will compete for the Miss South Carolina title. For Miss South Carolina, each contestant must work on a personal platform of their choice. She has chosen to pursue a platform close to her heart in order to educate children and adults about disabilities and sudden hearing loss- The Sound of Silence. Abruptly last year during spring semester finals, Meagan lost all of her hearing in her right ear. She was put on large doses of steroids and given steroid injections directly into her ear for 2 weeks. Due to all of the steroids, she became immune suppressed and because of a serious ear infection, suffered detrimental damage to her only hearing ear. She also had an adverse reaction to the medicine which caused her joints to swell. Because of the loss of hearing, she was then in need of a hearing aid for her left ear and major surgery for her right ear. She had successfully acclimated to the situation, but not without difficulty; insurance companies do not provide full coverage for most hearing aids and surgeries. She states that the public What s Next in Greek Life... needs to know about insurance issues as well as sudden hearing loss and its implications. People also need to be educated about how to cooperate with and accommodate those who are hearing impaired so that everyone may feel comfortable. She hopes to be a role model for children, to inspire them to overcome difficulties and to achieve their goals. She also wants to educate them about how to be around wears the crown proudly! Meagan Orton (ZTA) others who may be different than them and stress the difference they can make if they get involved in their communities. She is currently traveling around the Lowcountry and presenting to young children about the effects of hearing loss and what they can do to protect their ears. For more information about Meagan and her journey to Miss South Carolina and her platform, you can contact her directly at meorton@gmail.com.
