GREEK COLUMNS Newsletter of the Drexel University Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life Volume 8, Issue 3 John Fry takes the helm in August By Naomi Parikh The Triangle Moving to Philadelphia can be an adjustment, but not for Drexel President John Fry, who said he feels like he never left. Despite almost eight years in Lancaster as president of Franklin & Marshall, Fry said he maintained many old relationships and connections in Philadelphia, often making weekly visits to the city to meet with old friends. One of those friends included late Drexel President Constantine Papadakis, who Fry described as his role model. Fry said the location of F&M s largest alumni base in Philadelphia also played a role in his many trips to the city. "As a result, I don't think I ever lost touch with anything in Philadelphia," Fry said. Fry acknowledged that Drexel's size poses more challenges to getting student input, but he said he still hopes to employ some lessons he learned at F&M. "Obviously, Drexel is an institution ten times that of Franklin & Marshall, but one of the things that worked so well for me at F&M was that I really had fairly intense contact with students and with faculty and staff," Fry said. "A lot of the things we did in Lancaster that really worked out for the betterment of the college came from student ideas. Fry said he is still considering different ways to gain student Summer 2010 input at Drexel. "I will have office hours, but I have to figure out how to stage them," Fry said. "At F&M, I would just leave my office door open three hours on Friday. Here it's going to be a bit more complicated, but I'm looking for opportunities for students to give me their ideas and thoughts." Staffed by members from throughout the fraternity and sorority community, the drives collected 68 pints of blood from members, staff, and students. In the fall, Drexel Greek life will partner with Athletics to go for a fifth straight win in the Colonial Athletic Association Blood Drive Challenge. The drive will feature locations across campus on October 21 in an attempt to top the 859 pints collected by Drexel in the 2009 challenge to beat Delaware by over 100 pints. Registration is now open for the CAA Challenge. Sign up online at drexel.edu/giveblood.

VOLUME 8, ISSUE 3 GREEK COLUMNS PAGE 3 Hazing Prevention Awareness Week September 27-October 2, 2010 Hazing Prevention Awareness Week is a national event recognized at colleges and universities across the country to promote a firm stance against hazing in educational institutions and is just one part of the year-round hazing initiatives at Drexel. Activities range from speakers to films. Utilizing the national awareness week is a great way to bring attention to the problem of hazing locally and to educate parents, faculty and staff, students, and community members so they can more easily recognize hazing and have the skills to intervene when hazing occurs. The ultimate goal is to use education to prevent hazing in the first place. nds37@drexel.edu or visit for more information! 4 PAGE 4 GREEK COLUMNS VOLUME 8, ISSUE 3 Convention Season: Networking, Development & Awards Sigma Alpha Mu Convention By Greg Swan Sigma Alpha Mu Members of Mu Eta recently attended the ΣAM National Convention in Miami, Florida in August. We were provided with opportunities to meet bothers from all over the country, got to share stories, see all the similarities that brothers have, and also receive advice and support. Multiple seminars and business sessions were held covering topics ranging from recruitment, risk management, and general operations, all of which proved beneficial information. We were also fortunate enough to witness a once in a life time event at convention - the farewell dinner for our beloved William Schwartz, better known to most ΣAM s as Bill. He received his second lifetime service award after 55 years working for ΣAM National Headquarters, the longest service for any Greek Organization in the world. However, this award was the first one with the new name, The William P. Schwartz Lifetime Service Award. I was given the pleasure of sitting down and talking with Bill for awhile, with Bill sharing stories of Mu Eta s past and me sharing current stories from the new brotherhood. His absence from headquarters will be felt for years to come. The overall convention experience is something all members should be able to partake in and enjoy.

VOLUME 8, ISSUE 3 GREEK COLUMNS PAGE 5 Phi Mu in Phoenix By Caitlin Bookman Phi Mu From July 14 to July 18, 2010, our Vice-President, Dominique Cozza and I attended the Phi Mu bi-annual convention in Phoenix, AZ. Over 500 Phi Mu's from across the country gathered to complete business and exchange ideas. The convention was held at the Biltmore Resort & Spa and was jam packed with business meetings, luncheons, guest speakers, themed dinners, fundraising and presentations. The first order of business was voting on the new Phi Mu National president and officers. All positions ran unopposed and we got to hear each woman speak on why she deserved her new title. Some high lights of the convention included a "Roaring 40's" flapper party, a pool party and the carnation banquet event at the end of the week. We got to hear Deborah Phelps, Michael Phelps' mom speak because she is a Phi Mu. We also took home awards honoring our achievement of total and quota, honor roll and earning a 3.0 and above GPA. We met Phi Mu's from around the country from Maine to California. We became friends with the president from West Chester University and are planning some events with their chapter in the future. There were even some Phi Mu Drexel alum members at the convention, and we spent time with them while we were there. It was great to hear about Drexel in the past and discuss changes on campus. We benefited from getting to know older members of our organization and also Caitlin and Dominique with Drexel's Beta Tau sign at their 2010 national convention exchanging ideas with other chapters on how to improve ourselves. We had a really nice time in Phoenix's 120 degree weather and are looking forward to sending other members of our chapter to the upcoming convention in San Antonio, TX in 2012.

PAGE 6 GREEK COLUMNS VOLUME 8, ISSUE 3 ΠΚΑ Wins 7th Straight Smythe This summer members of the Lambda Zeta Chapter of Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity traveled to Austin, TX for their International Fraternity's annual conference. During the awards banquet the chapter was recognized on numerous levels of excellence including Chapter Programming Awards in Accountability and Athletics, as well as recognition for Pike University 25 Man Commitment, International Work Day, 100+ Man Chapter, and Scholarship Excellence. Amongst the over 225 Pi Kappa Alpha chapters, the Lambda Zeta Chapter was ranked near the top in every major category. In the end they were recognized again with the Fraternity's most beloved award, the Robert Adget Smythe Trophy. This award is given to the top 5% of Chapters in the Fraternity. This year marks Lambda Zeta's 7th consecutive Smythe. The chapter remains the fastest ever to win that number of Smythe Trophies consecutively. Also to be noted, during the farewell address made by Patrick Talley, the now former International President of Pi Kappa Alpha specifically commended the Lambda Zeta Chapter for its rapid successes and the pride they have shown as members of Pi Kappa Alpha.

PAGE 8 GREEK COLUMNS VOLUME 8, ISSUE 3 UIFI: A Life Changing Experience By Stephen Rosenblatt Alpha Epsilon Pi This summer I attended the Undergraduate Interfraternity Institute (UIFI) at Indiana University, and it absolutely changed my life. UIFI is a 5 day leadership experience created to give Greek leaders the tools to change things for the better in their chapter or campus. They broke everything into 5 different categories each one was a focus for the days you were there. The first day focused on meeting everyone and changing your thought process on how things can be done. We started by removing our Cool Caps -a fictitious cap that we wear to guard ourselves from really getting involved in things, especially silly ones. It is such a simple thing; we do not need to act cool in front of anyone and could be ourselves and be open to the issues we all came here to try to fix. From there we were separated into chapters or teams. We did exercises to build trust amongst members. Each one created team work and got us focused on actually getting things accomplished. Day two re-focus. We looked at new ways to show leadership by looking at ourselves through another pair of eyes and figuring out how our vision might have become an issue rather than a solution. Additionally we talked about teams and how you worked in a team environment. We went over simple concepts that made you re-focus how your team at home works together. Day three re-take. We focused on how we see our organization and how we might be off the point. The most powerful part of the day was when the director pulled out his ritual book. We are told from day one of pledging that its a secret. He said there are two kinds of ritual little r & big R. We need to take what is said in our Ritual (R) and make it a ritual (r) which is like our day to day actions and routines. His speech was very powerful and spoke to the character we all pledge to when we join fraternities and how soon we forget it. Day four re-build. This day we looked at all our problems, how they came to be, and who is really to blame. We did a lot of introspective work this day. The focus was on how I need to change myself before I can change my chapter. Day five re-vision. We met one-on-one with Greek life staff to talk about how we were going to change our organizations. One thing that I wanted to really focus on was the idea of making R into r. These five days were incredible; they opened my eyes to so many different ideas. I would advise anyone going on this to get another member to attend the program with you. Two voices speak greater than one. Taking on the world is not a oneman job. UIFI can give you the keys to fix a problem, but remember the keys don t always fit every situation.

Participants will create an account and sign-up for each sport on the site. For more info, Bryan Ford at intramurals@drexel.edu. Pi Kappa Alpha Hero Campaign On August 12, Pi Kappa Alpha hosted Drexel University's HERO Campaign to raise awareness for the importance of designated drivers. Established in 2000 in memory of a US Naval Academy graduate, John Elliott of New Jersey who was killed by a drunk driver, the campaign has grown to become a national movement to save lives on the highways. The event drew over 50 people during the volleyball tournament, with a great turnout from the Greek Community. Everyone passing by was given information about the purpose of the HERO Campaign during the four hour community event. The chapter looks forward to improving on the event in the upcoming year. Greek Conduct Board Training Held at Theta Chi On August 12, representatives from the Interfraternity, Multicultural, and Panhellenic Councils as well as their respective chapters and alumni members were trained to serve on the Drexel Fraternity/Sorority Conduct Board. The Board will hear cases involving alleged misconduct committed by a chapter as well as any appeals from chapters. The training was presented by Charles Schnur, Coordinator of Student Conduct & Community Standards, and those present were trained on the overall conduct process, the role of the Board, and how to be effective members. The students and alumni asked great questions and were treated to pizza and soda provided by the IFC. For more information about the Board or if you are interested in serving, please contact Katie Peoples.

VOLUME 8, ISSUE 3 GREEK COLUMNS PAGE 11 SAE Suspended by National Fraternity & Drexel Effective August 12, 2010, Drexel University and Sigma Alpha Epsilon International Fraternity agreed upon a decision to suspend ΣΑΕ Fraternity at Drexel University. Following an investigation by fraternity staff and Drexel University, the chapter was found in violation of the fire & life safety, alcohol, and hazing policies. The chapter was serving an interim suspension related to these violations prior to its closure. The decision to suspend a chapter is not an easy decision to make. It is disappointing that this had to happen, but a separation from the University will be most beneficial for ΣΑΕ, the University, and the Drexel fraternity and sorority community. Sigma Alpha Epsilon will be eligible to petition to recolonize on campus in academic year 2012/2013. The Pennsylvania Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity was chartered on October 4, For a full description of all Drexel policies and the student conduct process, please visit the Office of Student Conduct & Community S t a n d a r d s a t Please direct any questions to the Office of Fraternity & Sorority Life. CollegiateLink Program Launched The Office of Campus Activities launched a new student organization management platform this summer called CollegiateLink. The web-based platform offers students the chance to promote their group and its events to all Drexel students. In addition, the student organization recognition process will now take place entirely online through the system and students can create a personalized co-curricular transcript including all of their campus involvement. Powelton Village Celebrates 150th; ΑΧΡ Hosts House History Program On Tuesday, August 10, Alpha Chi Rho hosted Douglas Eubanks of the Powelton Village Civic Association to present on the 150-year history of the Powelton neighborhood. Eubanks focused specifically on the history of the structures now housing our fraternity and sorority community and the stories of their prior residents.

PAGE 12 GREEK COLUMNS VOLUME 8, ISSUE 3 Alpha Pi Lambda hosts annual SmackFest On August 3, Alpha Pi Lambda hosted its third annual Smackfest, philanthropic volleyball tournament. The event raised $850 to be donated to the Livestrong Foundation. The Lance Armstrong Livestrong Foundation provides support for people affected by cancer and supports cancer research. It was founded in 1997 by cancer survivor and champion cyclist Lance Armstrong. It provides support to guide people through the cancer experience, bring them together to fight cancer and work for a world in which our fight is no longer necessary. In all, 9 teams signed up with many Greek life chapters participating. The winners of the tournament were the brothers of Pi Kappa Alpha. The brothers of Alpha Pi Lambda plan to host the event again next summer. Happy Founders Day!
