Step 1. What Do You Want? Step 1: WHAT DO YOU WANT TO HAPPEN NEXT?

Step 1. What Do You Want? Don t Ask, Align Focus on aligning yourself with people in the places where you can share your passion, build new relationships, and discover opportunities

Step 1. What Do You Want?

Step 2: Get Comfortable With The Uncomfortable Step 2: Get comfortable with the uncomfortable

THE 90/10 RULE Life is 90% amazing 10% difficult (or a bunch of BS) The secret NEVER let the 10% take up 100% of your time! 2017 Help Me, Harlan LLC Reproduction without consent is prohibited

Get Comfortable With The Uncomfortable EMBRACE THE Universal Rejection Truth The URT says that not everyone and everything will respond to you the way you want everyone and everything to respond.

Get Comfortable With The Uncomfortable Text: EMBRACE THE Universal Rejection Truth of job search of job interviews of the first day at work

Step 2: Get Comfortable With The Uncomfortable WHEN YOU FACE UNWANTED RESULTS ASK. 1. Am I the problem? 2. Is someone or something else the problem? 3. Is it the problem The Universal Rejection Truth?

Step 2: Get Comfortable With The Uncomfortable Text: Anyone who gets an invitation to be in your life is incredibly lucky.

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Step 3: People, Places, Patience PEOPLE: Find Your 5 people PLACES: Find Your 3 places PATIENCE: Give it time

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Text: PLACES ARE WHERE YOU CAN Find connection, community, and support SWEAT PLAY PRAY LIVE LEARN LEAD LOVE WORK

Step 3: People, Places, Patience FIND YOUR 3 PLACES ALIGN WITH YOUR PROFESSIONAL DREAMS The Career Center Online Communities Clubs and organizations Volunteer Groups Organized Athletics Alumni Organizations Young Professional Groups Spiritual Groups Professional Networks Micro Internships

Step 3: People, Places, Patience

Step 3: People, Places, Patience

Step 3: People, Places, Patience

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Hometown: New Albany, IN High School: Our Lady of Providence Colleges You Attended: Purdue University Major in College: Industrial Design Places in College: BGR Student Orientation Committee, Liberal Arts Leadership Council, Old Master's, Purdue Foundation Student Board PLACES THAT HELPED ME FIND MY CURRENT JOB: Computer Science Career Fair - Combined with my friend introducing me to a recruiter she knew, the CS career fair allowed me to talk to Microsoft without the huge hubbub of IR. Glassdoor.com - Helped me figure out what to expect from interviews and the salary range I could expect from different companies Office Hours - Helped me refine my portfolio and tune it to match employer expectations for each interview.

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Hometown: West Lafayette, IN High School: West Lafayette Senior High Colleges You Attended: Purdue University Major in College: English Lit, History Minor Places in College: Liberal Arts Student Council, Liberal Arts Student Leadership Council, Purdue Exponent Reporter, Bell Tower Literary Judge, THiNK Magazine Contributor, Dammon Dean's Scholar, Presidential Scholar, Margo Katherine Wilke Scholar, "5 Students Who" featured student Places on campus (or online) that helped me find my current job: Clubs and events that allowed me to network with alums. This is how I met the alum who helped me get my internship. Liberal Arts Influentials Class: This is what made me realize I needed to start figuring out what I wanted to do post-grad ASAP. LinkedIn: it's your online resume. As a recruiter, this is how I source candidates for roles I'm trying to fill. It's thought in recruiting that the highest-quality candidates are not looking for jobs--you have to seek them out. If you're not on LinkedIn you're missing out on being sought after by recruiters.

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Hometown: Indianapolis, IN High School: Franklin Central Colleges: Purdue Major in College: Political Science, Entrepreneurship & Innovation Places in College (Clubs, Activities, Leadership Positions): AXO, Student budget committee, CLA Leadership Council Current Job: Business Process Improvement Consultant Places on campus (or online) that helped me find my current job: I applied for my initial role Lincoln Financial Group s Leadership Preparation Program through the CCO website. I landed a very good job.

Step 3: People, Places, Patience WHO ARE YOUR PEOPLE? People who volunteer to help People who are paid to help People you ask to help

Step 3: People, Places, Patience FIND YOUR 5 PEOPLE WHO CAN GUIDE & SUPPORT YOU Professors Employers Advisors Community leaders Counselors Mentors Professionals Administrators Coaches People You Admire

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Alumni Pages

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Hometown: New Albany, IN High School: Our Lady of Providence Colleges You Attended: Purdue University Major in College: Industrial Design Places in College: BGR Student Orientation Committee, Liberal Arts Leadership Council, Old Master's, Purdue Foundation Student Board 3 people who have helped me most during my job search: Lori Sparger was probably the first person in my college experience who got me thinking about intentionally building a professional network and tending to it from time to time - a skill that will always be invaluable. TJ Kim, my design professor, has a huge wealth of knowledge about the design industry at large. He taught us how to "talk the talk" when looking for jobs and how to present the right skills during each interview. Craig Johnson, my BGR adviser, taught me how to frame what I wanted out of a career and seek out companies accordingly. The combination of these three people and the things they taught me helped me approach my job search feeling prepared and excited that I could make my future what I wanted it to be.

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Hometown: West Lafayette, IN High School: West Lafayette Senior High Colleges You Attended: Purdue University Major in College: English Lit, History Minor Places in College: Liberal Arts Student Council, Liberal Arts Student Leadership Council, Purdue Exponent Reporter, Bell Tower Literary Judge, THiNK Magazine Contributor, Dammon Dean's Scholar, Presidential Scholar, Margo Katherine Wilke Scholar, "5 Students Who" featured student 3 people who have helped me most during my job search: 1. The Purdue alum who helped me get my internship at Glassdoor: He helped me get my foot in the door with the VP of HR at Glassdoor, which is how I got the job. As a recruiter now I know it would've been nearly impossible to get an internship in SF from Indiana in a non-engineering role without knowing someone to put in a good word for me. 2. My mom: she's the one that pushed me to make a connection with the alum who helped me get my internship! 3. My recruiter who pushed me to intern on her team: she went on to become my manager as an intern, and then later full-time and is now like a mentor to me.

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Hometown: Indianapolis, IN High School: Franklin Central Colleges: Purdue Major in College: Political Science, Entrepreneurship & Innovation Places in College (Clubs, Activities, Leadership Positions): AXO, Student budget committee, CLA Leadership Council Current Job: Business Process Improvement Consultant People who have helped me most during my job search: The Purdue CCO, my mother, and the CLA leadership staff. They were able to guide me through job search platforms and were sounding boards for my vision of the future.

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Patience: The ability to tolerate discomfort while finding your people and places in pursuit of your dream

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Hometown: New Albany, IN High School: Our Lady of Providence Colleges You Attended: Purdue University Major in College: Industrial Design Places in College: BGR Student Orientation Committee, Liberal Arts Leadership Council, Old Master's, Purdue Foundation Student Board Most Uncomfortable Experience I am super bad at being patient. With big companies, hurry up and wait is the name of the game. When you are waiting on something from them, it takes forever, but when they need something from you, they need it now. You have to be prepared to pull some late nights to prepare for interviews and career fairs while staying on top of your coursework. I learned that even if I feel rushed by an ask from an interviewer, it is in my best interest to prioritize that and put in my best effort. Advice For Soon-To-Be Grads Expand your search outside of the vocabulary you are used to from school. An English major could make a great Program Manager or a VCD student could make a great Front End Developer. You have to be creative and really figure out how your skills align to corporate lingo.

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Hometown: West Lafayette, IN High School: West Lafayette Senior High Colleges You Attended: Purdue University Major in College: English Lit, History Minor Places in College: Liberal Arts Student Council, Liberal Arts Student Leadership Council, Purdue Exponent Reporter, Bell Tower Literary Judge, THiNK Magazine Contributor, Dammon Dean's Scholar, Presidential Scholar, Margo Katherine Wilke Scholar, "5 Students Who" featured student Most Uncomfortable Experience Following up with the alum over and over again to get my internship. He didn't directly set me up with Glassdoor after speaking with him. I ed him every few weeks to check in until he eventually connected me with Glassdoor's HR/Recruiting team. It was really uncomfortable because I felt annoying. There is definitely a balance to the "squeaky wheel gets the oil" saying, but if I hadn't continued to follow up and work for it a little bit, I wouldn't be where I am today. Advice For Soon-To-Be Grads Do everything you can to meet and connect with people who are in positions you want to be in. Do your homework and take some time to think through what you want and what you're good at going into these conversations. Make it easy for them to help you. The sooner you start building your resume, the better. I wish I had done internships every summer. It would've made it even easier to get a job, and to figure out things I liked doing.

Step 3: People, Places, Patience Hometown: Indianapolis, IN High School: Franklin Central Colleges: Purdue Major in College: Political Science, Entrepreneurship & Innovation Places in College (Clubs, Activities, Leadership Positions): AXO, Student budget committee, CLA Leadership Council Most Uncomfortable Experience I had a full-time job, took 15 credit hours, was applying for law school, studying for the LSATs and searching for jobs. I didn t get to enjoy my last semester on campus. I learned that you cannot be fully devoted to anything if there 4 other things on your mind. Advice For Soon-To-Be Grads. Your resume is EVERYTHING. I had maybe 5 people help me edit my resume and Linkedin profile. Your brand is everything.

Step 4: Tell Your Story As If STEP 4: Tell your story as if it has already happened It s February 13, 2019 Here s what happened this year! Social, Emotional, Physical, Financial, Academic Stories

Step 4. Tell Your Story As If Tell your personal and professional stories as if It s February 13, 2019 and I m so proud of what I ve accomplished! I reached my goal and was able to (Fill in Outcome). The most challenging part was (Fill In). I got through it by leaning on (Person #1), (Person #2), and (Person #3) for answers and support. I found people to guide me and support me in the following three places: (Place #1), (Place #2), and (Place #3). It took me (Fill in Time) to get the results I desired. I m so grateful and incredibly proud of myself and my accomplishments. Personal Goal
