1 Year 10 Character Design Designer in Residence Simon Scales TASK: Your task is to create your own character design. You will be required to complete research, thumbnail sketches, document Photoshop process by print screen, final design and a 250word practitioner s statement. Week Topic Homework W 1 Introduction to Photoshop Research ideas for own - Students will be navigated through Photoshop, opening files, saving, basic tools character design Introduction to Design task - Simon Scales website - Discuss the designer in residence programme - Show examples of current character design and discuss as a class the different types of shapes used for different characters - Students to begin researching to collect ideas for their own character design. - All images for research must be annotated with reference to art elements and design principles. W 2 Simon will: Induct students further into Photoshop. Show students how to generate ideas Create thumbnails Discuss composition Demonstrate how to create a thumbnail (line work and drawing in Photoshop) Demonstrate using basic shapes Continue annotating research
2 W 3 W 4 W 5 Research Continued: - Students continue to gather reference images to use as a part of their research. - Finish annotating - Students complete a minimum of 5 thumbnail sketches (on paper) - Discuss and demonstrate the use of tone Students must: Arrive to lesson with final line drawing Redraw using the Wacom tablets Simon will: Demonstrate drawing design in Photoshop Demonstrate digital painting and adding tone Creating a Setting (part 1) - Students are introduced to the concept of creating a setting for their characters. - Discuss as a class the types of settings/props that already exist Students will need to: Find a minimum of three high res images Use elements of these images to create their own scene Teacher demonstration Combining three images using layer masks, laso tool, layer adjustments, filters etc. Each example will be different depending on the images selected. Complete 5 thumbnail sketches in sketch book Print screen process and add this to sketchbook Collect images for setting. Document ideas in sketchbook
3 W 6 W 7 **Simon Scales Session Simon will demonstrate: Colour theory (Hue, value and temperature) Colour thumbnails Different rendering techniques How to start painting colour from scratch Students will begin to colour their own designs. Simon will discuss: - Creating a mood or feeling for your work and select a colour palette accordingly. How will you use colour to direct their way around your painting? Use of colour Following Simon s lesson last week regarding the use of colour, students will be show a range of images illustrating how artists have used colour to direct the viewer s eye around the painting. Informal arts analysis (in class) Creating a Setting (part 2) Students will continue to manipulate backgrounds using the techniques demonstrated in week 5. Practitioner s Statement Students will be taught how to write a practitioner s statement. As an artist, write your own practitioner s statement about your character design (Complete in week 9) Print Screen process and add to sketchbook Check you have met assessment criteria: - Research - Ideation (Thumbnail Sketches/printscreen) - Final design - Practitioner s statement.
4 W 8 Simon will demonstrate: Using textures Using photos as textures Lighting Adjustment layers Students will finalise their character design. Some may have completed the setting as well, but this is not compulsory.
