2 WHAT IS PRINTMAKING?? Printmaking is an art technique that uses certain tools to carve an image on a hard surface. The image is inked over and stamped onto printing paper. Printmaking is used for massproduction.

3 BRAIN QUESTION What are some things that you know are mass-produced?

4 WHERE DID PRINTMAKING BEGIN? The Chinese developed a printing technique called woodcut to print books of Chinese characters and images, around 100 AD.

9 WHAT CAN YOU DO? ANYTHING YOU DECIDE TO DO MUST BE ORIGINAL (NO LOGOS) 1. Design- no hearts, stars, elementary clouds and trees or logos, no letters or numbers. These things are not CREATIVE. 2. Cultural Images- something related to your culture or interests. 3. Animals or people

11 MATERIALS: Paper (Thumbnail sketches) Pencil/Eraser Foam Boards Ball Point Pens Watercolor Paints Paintbrushes Water cups Black Sharpies

12 CRITERIA 1. You may have VALUE in your art hatching, cross-hatching, stippling. The smooth value is not going to work!

13 VALUE Value is the lightness or darkness of a color. These are the examples of value making other than smooth.

14 CRITERIA 2. The lines you carve will be WHITE because you press the foamboard in where the ink cannot get to it, what is left will be printed with watercolor. Think OPPOSITE.

15 CRITERIA 3. Craftsmanship is IMPORTANT. 4. You must have an ORIGINAL IDEA 5. You MUST have at least 4 sketches. 6. Your border MUST have a zentangle design. [PATTERNS]

16 HOW TO BEGIN Step 1. 4 sketches in SKETCHBOOK. (not anything too detailed) Step 2. Check with the teacher to see which idea will work the best. Step 3. Paint background using watercolor to create a background for your printmaking.

19 WATERCOLOR BACKGROUND

20 HOW TO BEGIN Step 4. REDRAW drawing onto final paper, make it how it needs to look. Add VALUE- hatching and cross-hatching. Step 5. Tape drawing onto the foamboard and trace image with a pen.

21 STEP 5: DRAWING ON THE FOAMBOARD. A. Do NOT indent in the foam too hard where it goes all the way through. It can rip. B. Indent in a little at a time to prevent mess ups. (parts indented in cannot be put back) BE CAREFUL!

22 STEP 5: DRAWING ON THE FOAMBOARD. C. Use different sized lines to create a more interesting piece of art. VARIETY OF LINES D. It s very difficult to put detail into a foamboard. Try to prevent too much details in your drawings.

23 SIDE QUESTION Why do you need to indent a little bit at a time?

24 HOW TO BEGIN Step 6. Retrace transferred image with a pen directly onto the foamboard. Step 7. Begin indenting in the textures only with your pen slowly.

27 STEP 9: INKING

28 Inking The FoamBoard Burnishing The Paper with the baron (we will use a press) Rolling The Ink Placing Paper On The Printing Plate (FoamBoard)

29 STEP 10: ZENTANGLE BORDER Finish your printmaking by adding a zentangle design all the way around the border of the paper.

30 SIDE QUESTION Why is it important to follow instructions?

31 PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN Balance: spread out colors, and designs evenly. Fill the foamboard block. Emphasis: what is going to stand out the most in your work? Pattern: Think about zentangle design or patterns that you do not normally see. Variety- things of different sizes in lines and shapes.
