Chapter 8 Printmaking

Relief Printing

The Apocalypse was Dürer s first major publication, and featured as one of the prints is the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. This print is based on the figures discussed in the Book of Revelation 6:1 8. Here Dürer, instead of lining the figures up in a pose, has them charging forth upon the land and the people (Stokstad, 2008). The lines used by Dürer have an energy and movement creating textures and values. These lines create form and suggest emotion (Kleiner, 2009). 9 Poster advertising the famous Bruant: singer, songwriter, and performer. The style was influenced by Japanese prints (flattened space and bold colors). The artist who created the poster, Toulouse-Lautrec, was commissioned to design and make several copies to advertise the singer s new show (Frank, 2014). Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. 14 Notes on Chapter 8 and Printmaking Videos (DeWitte, Larmann, and Shields, 2012) and (Frank, 2014). Relief Printing: The artist carves into a block of wood or linoleum. What is carved away does not get printed because it does not receive ink. The raised areas that remain will receive ink and make the printed image on paper. A = woodblock with raised areas that get ink carved areas get no ink B = paper receives ink from raised areas and becomes the relief print Intaglio Printing: Intaglio is the exact opposite of relief printing. The artist cuts into a metal plate. The grooves and lines that are cut will hold ink and will make the printed image on paper. Engravings use sharp tools (not acid) and rely on strength and precision to carve into the metal plate. This metal plate shows ink held in the grooves. The smooth area of the metal plate will hold no ink and will not print. The paper being lifted away has the printed image from the grooves of the plate. Smooth area holds no ink! Etchings use acid baths to cut deeper grooves into the metal plate. The artist draws onto the metal plate which has been covered with a waxy material called a ground. The drawing peels away the waxy surface revealing the metal of the plate. Then the plate is put into an acid bath, and the acid eats the exposed metal creating deeper grooves. Other Intaglio printmaking methods include Drypoint and Aquatint.

Lithography: litho = stone and graphy = writing Planographic Printing: flat surface The artist draws onto a smooth limestone surface with an oil-based crayon or ink to create an image. The image is fixed into the stone with chemicals even though it looks like it has disappeared. Then the stone is sponged with water and inked with an oil-based ink. The oil in the ink is attracted to the oily image fixed into the pores of stone. The wet areas of the sponge with no oily fixed image, repel the ink. When put through the press, only the inked image makes the print. Silkscreen or Serigraphy: seri = silk and graphy = writing Silkscreen relies on stencils to create the printed image. Ink is pushed through the open areas of the silkscreen (stretched over a wooden frame), and the image is printed on the paper. The areas blocked by the stencil do not get ink and do not get printed.

Review: Drawing, Painting, Printmaking, and Photography True or False Questions 1. An example of dry drawing media is charcoal. 2. The yearning to draw is as natural as the yearning to speak. 3. Drawing can be learned. 4. Drawing is just for preparation, not as a finished work of art. 5. Van Gogh created drawings made with Japanese bamboo pen and ink. 6. Drawing can be made with brush and ink. 7. The binder is the color in paint and the pigment holds the color together. 8. Painting can be considered drawing with paint. 9. An example of a binder for paint is egg yolk. 10. Canvas is an example of a painting surface or support. 11. Acrylic and oil are thinned with turpentine. 12. Watercolor is loose and allows for many changes and corrections. 13. Binders such as poppyseed, walnut, and linseed are acceptable for oil painting. 14. Oil paint is versatile because it can be used as a thin glaze and a thick opaque film. 15. Acrylic paint is also considered a synthetic paint. 16. Fresco painting is color suspended with egg yolk proteins. 17. The Europeans were the first to invent printmaking methods.

18. An example of a relief print would be a linoleum cut. 19. The Japanese woodblock prints highly influenced the artists of the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist eras. 20. Engravings are carved into linoleum or wood. 21. Intaglio is the opposite of relief printing. 22. Engravings employ a loose, free line. 23. Etchings use acid baths to make the lines deep grooves. 24. Drypoint printmaking also uses acid to etch the plates. 25. Examples of Planographic printing are lithography and woodcut. 26. Lithography uses the premise that oil and water do not mix. 27. Lithography was used to make illustrations and cartoons for newspapers and handbills long before modern printing presses were invented. 28. Lithography prints could advertise shows and help people become famous. 29. Silkscreen prints rely on stencils. 30. Silkscreen prints influenced the production of posters and spread social and political messages. 31. In serigraphy, all colors are applied at once. 32. Painters realized they were free from having to recreate nature because photography could do it 33. Portrait painters impacted how photographers took portraits of people. 34. Photographs of important historical and social events take us there to that moment. 35. A photo essay tells a whole story with just one photograph. 36. Margaret Bourke-White photographed battlefronts, victims of the Holocaust, and the faces of the Great Depression. 37. Ansel Adams raised awareness of the great landscape of America.
