1 ANSI Generic Welding Symbols This appendix presents generic symbols allowing you to create welding, brazing, and examination symbols in a drawing according to the ANSI standard. To aid you in creating symbol instances, it provides the following information for each generic symbol: The generic symbol name and brief description. An example of an instance created from this generic symbol and the associated menu picks. Listings of groups and subgroups in menu format reflecting a tree symbol definition structure. Notes advising how to correctly create instances using a specific group listing. You can also see the Glossary of Menu Picks on page 1-3 for an explanation of menu selections for welding symbols. 1-1

Welding Symbols Library The Welding Symbols Library, available with Pro/DETAIL, provides a collection of generic system symbols according to the ANSI standard. Using this library, you can create a variety of welding, brazing, and examination symbols in a drawing. To retrieve a symbol from the Welding Symbol Library, choose System Syms from the Select File menu to access the Pro/ENGINEER symbols area. For information on how to create symbols, see the Drawing User s Guide. The generic symbols comply with the following restrictions: Symbol dimensions are in accordance with ANSI/AWS A2.4-86, Appendix A. Text height is.063 inches. Text width is.8. A typical entry of variable text allows a maximum of three spaces (note that a decimal point is also considered a space). For example: [.11], [1.1], and [111] are legal entries. Entering more than three characters can overwrite other text or symbol entities. Exceptions include the following text entries: FILLET_SIZE REINFORCE_SIZE LENGTH PITCH 7 spaces 7 spaces 4 spaces 4 spaces Only decimal values are allowed for numeric entries. Default text (text enclosed in brackets), entered for variable text, has no physical meaning and is intended only to illustrate the format of the number you are prompted to enter. If you do not enter text (numeric or alphanumeric) at the system prompt, the system places the default text instead. Controlling Symbol and Text Size Welding symbols are variable height symbols. To modify the symbol height, use the Height option in the Mod Symbol menu. 1-2 WELDING SYMBOLS LIBRARY Catalog

Customizing Your Symbols The text height in symbols is related to the height of the symbol size. To match the text height appearing in the symbol to the text height in the drawing, scale the instance accordingly (either while adding an instance to the drawing, or later by changing the symbol height). Using the Copy Symbol option in the Symbol Edit menu, you can customize the height of your symbols and adjust the draft entities associated with it. When you choose this option, assign each symbol a new name and then retrieve it into the edit window for customization. To change the height of the symbol text, use Modify Text in the Symbol Edit menu. To move the draft entities, use Tools in the Detail menu. ANSI Generic Welding Symbols Welding Symbol Library Structure Glossary of Menu Picks Each type of generic symbol resides in a separate directory according to the following classification: Combination welding symbols allow you to create three kinds of welding symbols: with arrow-side significance, with other-side significance, and with both arrow- and other-side significance. The names of the combination symbols start with COMB_.... One-side welding symbols allow you to create welding symbols with either arrow-side or other-side significance. Brazing symbols enable you to create a required brazing symbol. Examination symbols provide a means to create symbols indicating the type of examination and radiation source. This glossary explains the different menu selections available in the Welding Symbol Library and identifies information you are prompted to enter. For a comprehensive explanation of the types of welds and restrictions, consult ANSI/AWS A , Standard Symbols for Welding, Brazing, and Non-destructive Examination, and applicable welding symbols standards. In the second table, all items identified with an asterisk require you to enter a numeric or text value after you select all characteristics of the welding symbol. In the DESCRIPTION column, menu items are shown in bold, while text entries are shown in plain text. ANSI Generic Welding Symbols 1-3

In the group listings, exclusive groups are enclosed in a double frame, while independent groups are in a single frame. In this appendix, for the purpose of clarity, overlapping text lines are spread to make them readable. 52 2 ISO Welding Symbols This appendix presents examples of symbols that enable you to create welding, brazing, and examination symbols in a drawing according to the ISO standard. To help you create symbol instances, it provides the following information for each symbol: The symbol name An example of an instance created from this symbol and the associated menu picks Listings of groups and subgroups in menu format reflecting a tree symbol definition structure You can also refer to Glossary of Menu Picks below for an explanation of menu selections for welding symbols. 2-1

Welding Symbols Library The Welding Symbols Library, available with Pro/DETAIL, provides a collection of symbols according to the ISO standard. Using this library, you can create a variety of welding, brazing, and examination symbols in a drawing. To retrieve a symbol from the Welding Symbol Library, choose System Syms from the Select File menu to access the Pro/ENGINEER symbols area. (For information concerning the creation of symbols in accordance with the ANSI standard, see Appendix B, ANSI Generic Welding Symbols. For information on how to create symbols in Pro/ENGINEER, see the Drawing User s Guide.) ISO Welding Symbols Glossary of Menu Picks This glossary describes terms that are unique to the ISO Welding Symbol Library and identifies information you are prompted to enter. Menu pick names track the ISO Welding Symbol Library to the fullest extent possible. (For terms that are also used in the ANSI Welding Symbol Library and are, therefore, not unique to the ISO Welding Symbol Library see Glossary of Menu Picks in Appendix B, ANSI Generic Welding Symbols) In the ISO Welding Symbol Library, two lines form the reference line, one solid and one dashed. Weld symbols attached to the solid line are arrow-side. Weld symbols attached to the dashed line are other-side. The dashed line is only omitted for symmetrical welds. When creating a welding symbol, you first select whether the weld is arrow side, other-side, or symmetrical. If you choose ARROW_SIDE or OTHER_SIDE, the system prompts you to create the weld symbol above or beneath the reference line. It then places the dashed line appropriately in the symbol depending on whether it is arrow-side or other-side. ISO Weld Characteristics Menu Selections MENU PICK OPTION DESCRIPTION ABOVE_REF Creates the weld symbol above the solid reference line. AS_ABOVE_ REF Indicates (for combination welding symbols only) whether the arrow-side welding symbol is placed above or beneath the reference line. ISO Welding Symbols 2-2

MENU PICK OPTION DESCRIPTION BENEATH_REF Creates the weld symbol beneath the solid reference line. BUTT_SIZE Refers to the final size of the weld, depending on the symbol type (arrow-side, other-side, symmetrical, or staggered). It might have the suffix AS (arrow-side) or OS (other-side) to indicate the appropriate weld side. SMOOTH_BLEND Describes the final shape of the weld. This choice indicates that the toes of the weld are blended smoothly. FILLET_SIZE FIL_SIZE HOLE_DIA OS_ABOVE_ REF PROJECT_DIA SEAM_WIDTH In the ANSI standard, this specifies the method of finishing. In the ISO standard, the system adds a machine finish surface texture symbol above the contour symbol. Refers to the final size of the weld, depending on the symbol type (arrow-side, other-side, symmetrical, or staggered). It might have the suffix AS (arrow-side) or OS (other-side) to indicate the appropriate weld side. Refers to the final size of the weld, depending on the symbol type (arrow-side, other-side, symmetrical, or staggered). It might have the suffix AS (arrow-side) or OS (other-side) to indicate the appropriate weld side. Refers to the diameter of a plug weld. Indicates (for combination welding symbols only) whether the other-side welding symbol is placed above or beneath the reference line. Refers to the diameter of a projection weld. Refers to the width of a seam weld. 2-3 WELDING SYMBOLS LIBRARY Catalog

MENU PICK OPTION DESCRIPTION SPOT_DIA STYLE SYMMETRICAL TAIL WELD_SIZE WELD_TYPE CONTINOUS INTERMITTENT WELD_PROCESS Refers to the diameter of a spot or fusion weld. Refers to the longitudinal dimension of a weld. Two choices are available: Weld joint continuously for the specified length. Creates weld beads of specified length, distance between adjacent weld elements, and specific number of beads. Refers to a welding symbol for creating identical welds on both arrow-side and other- side. Creates a tail on the opposite end of the welding symbol from the leader attachment. Provides two choices: Enters reference text or note. Specifies a welding process. Refers to the final size of the weld, depending on the symbol type (arrow-side, other-side, symmetrical, or staggered). It might have the suffix AS (arrow-side) or OS (other-side) to indicate the appropriate weld side. For combination welding symbols, indicates the type of weld being created and whether it is created arrow-side or other-side (e.g., FILLET_AS). ISO Welding Symbols ISO Welding Symbols 2-4
