3 Short Introduction to Planes Not on VPs (Pitches and Inclined Planes) Bounding box Basic Structure and Proportional Measurements Use the HEPM system for the following: Determine width to height ratio for structure s bounding box. (Red measurement lines) Draw the bounding box somewhere in the center of your paper. The bounding box frames in your structure so you can place hash marks that define key locations and measurements. Bounding box option: Unless you need an exact, proportional drawing of the building, you may want to adjust the proportions to your liking.

8 Drawing Structures With Pitched Roofs Setting the Horizon Line and Proportional Markers Structure s bounding box From the steps on the previous slides, you determined: 1. The bounding box proportions (Gray box). Mine is a 3 to 5 ratio. (Longer than the 3 to 4 sample) 2. How far above the bottom the resides (Gold line). Mine is a little over 1/3 up. 3. How far from an edge of bounding box the closest corner is. Mine is a little over 1/3 of the way in from the right. (Red line) 4. How far above the bottom of box your closest corner walls rise. About 3/5 up. (Green)
9 Setting the and Marks 4 3 Use the printed-out guide to establish the distance of the VPs from the bounding box (Use a proportional method to determine). Set the horizon line VPs (Vanishing points) far enough outside the bounding box so that the steepness of the converging perspective lines angles are not too acute. Next set the line for the height and bottom of where the walls meet at the nearest corner (Red line).
10 Draw Converging Perspective Lines Roof bottom line Building bottom line of left wall Draw the roof bottom and the building bottom converging lines for the left wall from (Blue lines) (You cannot draw the top roof (ridge line) converging line yet. We need to first establish where the peak is.)
11 Draw Converging Perspective Lines Roof bottom line Building bottom line of left wall Building bottom line of right wall Draw the building bottom converging line for the right wall from to the nearest corner bottom. (Green lines) Draw a converging line from to the top of the nearest corner (Green line) (We can now establish where ends of the right and left walls.)
12 Draw Converging Perspective Lines End of left wall at end of bounding box Roof bottom line End of right wall at end of bounding box Draw the vertical ends of the right and left walls. Be sure to fit them at the vertical sides of your bounding box and fit them between the converging perspective lines. (We can now establish where the roof peak is.)
13 Draw Roof Pitch and Roof Ridge Line Draw an X on the right wall plane (Red dashed lines). This wall contains the pitch of the roof. (Remember, your bounding box defines the far right and left corners of the building.) We can now establish how high the roof peak is. The bounding box actually sets the height, but you may want to shorten or raise it depending on how it looks.
14 Draw Roof Pitch and Roof Ridge Line Roof peak line Draw a vertical line through the center of the X to set the location and height of the pitch of the roof (Vertical red dashed line). Notice that the right and left halves of the X are not equal in size. Now we can establish the roof peak (ridge) line.
15 Draw Roof Pitch and Roof Ridge Line My decision to lower the peak (ridge) of the roof. From here to here My lowered roof perspective ridge line Draw a converging perspective line for the roof peak from to the top of the vertical red dashed line on the far right wall. (Top blue line) (Though the top of the bounding box actually sets the height, it could be shortened or raised at this point. I decided to shorten it, thus making my building proportionally longer than the original.) (We will next draw all our wall lines and four lines for this roof.)
16 Draw Roof Pitch and Roof Line My lowered roof perspective peak line Draw in the three vertical corner lines for the walls. (Blue lines) Draw the building s base lines and bottom roof line. (Green lines)
17 Draw Roof Pitch to Peak Line Right wall s roof pitch lines My lowered roof perspective peak line Draw two diagonal roof pitch lines that meet at the top of the vertical center line from the X. These lines define the peak on the right side wall (Blue lines)
18 Draw Roof Pitch to Peak Line Right wall s roof pitch lines Roof perspective peak line Remove the dashed red lines. Remove all converging and sketching lines except for and the top roof peak line. Remove bounding box lines.
19 Establishing A Third VP for the Roof Plane Far left diagonal pitch line vicinity Roof perspective peak line A B C Establish the far left side wall s diagonal roof pitch line. There are two ways. Here is the easiest. The perspective roof lines A and B converge to the. However, the roof pitch lines do not converge with VPs on the horizon line. The diagonal pitch line C, moving upward to the peak, does not converge with either VP because the roof is on a different plane and has a different VP. Draw a vertical sketch line straight up from the. (Red dashed line)

Draw a diagonal sketch line (C-1) (Blue dashed line) that extends from the right roof pitch line (C) up to intersect the vertical line from. (Red dashed line) These meet at VP-3.

23 Left and Right Angles of Roof Pitches Angle of right pitch Angle of left pitch Angle of left pitch This shows the difference between the left and right pitches for the roof. When the building is not a major part of the scene you are creating, this is not a big issue. Merely make sure your far left pitch is angled (flattened) a slight bit more than your right pitch is.
24 Inclines Homework Using HEPM to establish your structure s bounding box. Establish,, and. Establish the front roof pitch angles and roof peak location. Establish VP-3, then the far left roof pitch angle and peak location. Draw in doors/windows. Feel free to rough in some trees. Do not use a grid behind your paper. Do this exercise on a piece of drawing paper. Establish basic structure after building your bounding box with hash marks. Don t do any tonal work but. Print this guide page.
