1 Design Investigation 1: Perspective Pictorial Drawing Level 3 (Pre-Tertiary) Introduction Computer Graphics & Design as a subject encourages students in part to develop an understanding of design and associated principles and practice, to understand the implications of design on the environment and demonstrate skills and knowledge of Computer Graphic Design in its many applications, from the very structured through to the creative/expressive disciplines. What Will You Learn About The aim of this topic is to develop an understanding of the concepts and ideas behind the perspective pictorial drawing system used by designers to represent objects and forms through viewing from specific points. This is the method that most closely resembles the images we see through our eyes. What You Have To Do Step 1: Knowledge To gain an understanding of the different representational drawing systems for the visual communication of ideas we will go through the part of the handout Three Dimensional Representational Drawing Systems that deals with perspective systems. This provides a clear overview of the ideas behind drawing using the perspective method of drawing objects to show all three sides of an object. What Is Perspective Projection (Drawing)? Perspective is a system developed by Renaissance artists and designers as a method of translating 3D forms into 2D images. It aims to show solid objects on a plane (flat) surface so that the drawing produces the same visual impression of actual objects when viewed from a particular point through our own eyes 1/27/2015 Page 1

3 B Two Point (Angular) Perspective Also called an off axis view. The primary receding lines are not parallel with the line of sight and recede to two different vanishing pints at the left and right of the picture. (from Getting Started with 3D by Janet Ashford & John Odam) C Three Point Perspective When object are viewed from above or below, a third vanishing point can appear, towards which the vertical lines of the object recede. 4 Step 2: Do We will complete a set of simple perspective freehand sketches to get an understanding of this method and to further build our skills and understanding of drawing techniques for design. We will aim to add tones and textures to add extra depth and realism to some of our sketches. In producing one point (parallel) perspective drawings this process should always be followed. 1. Position surface of the side wanted to be closest to the viewer 2. Draw lines from the top and bottom corners of this surface back to each vanishing point 3. Add in the shape of the top or bottom depending whether you are looking up or down or at the object. 4. Cut out details to form the overall final shape of the objects 5. Darken in lines that show the final shape of the object. 6. Carefully remove any set out lines. In producing two point (angular) perspective drawings this process should always be followed. 1. Position the line to show the front edge closest to the viewer 2. Draw lines from the top and bottom of this front edge back to each vanishing point 3. Add in the shape of the top or bottom depending whether you are looking up or down or at the object. 4. Cut out details to form the overall final shape of the objects 5. Darken in lines that show the final shape of the object. 6. Carefully remove any set out lines. 5 Assessment Assessment of this assignment will be based on your ability to communicate your understanding of the perspective method of pictorial drawing in completing the required tasks. Neatness and presentation of work with your name neatly printed on your sketches will also help. Assessment Criteria Level 3C (Pre tertiary) 4 Generate and communicate ideas and information using a range of graphic techniques A Produce detailed and accurate perspective drawings that demonstrate an in depth understanding of this drawing method to visually communicate ideas.
