3 Perspective is one of the most important tools in drawing a 3-dimensional scene or object on a 2-dimensional surface. Types of Linear perspective: Single- (or one-) point Two-point Three-, four-, and five-point Types of Atmospheric perspective: Aerial (Diffusion of detail and tone) Layering (Foreground, to mid, to background) Proportional (Size relationship) Color temperature and detail

4 Example of Atmospheric and Linear Perspective Foreground objects are usually depicted with warmer colors, more tonal range, higher contrast with more detail and definition. Background objects are usually depicted with cooler colors (blues and grayed hues), less tonal range, and lower contrast with less detail.

7 Single-Point Perspective Grid (Review) Basic 1-Point Perspective Rules Structural lines, like roof lines, sidewalks, fence lines, furniture, floors, etc.: Lines moving toward the horizon and/ or vanishing point (in other words, away from you): Lines above the horizon move downward as they go away toward the horizon. Lines below the horizon move upward as they go away toward the horizon. Horizontal and vertical lines not moving toward the horizon: Vertical structural lines like corners of buildings, window/door casings, light poles, corners of furniture should be drawn straight up and down to meet the top and bottom of the converging lines. Tops and bottoms of objects (surfaces or planes) that face you should be drawn horizontal.

26 Single-Point Perspective Grid Exercise Place your single-point perspective grid under a piece of newsprint. Make sure you an see the converging perspective lines through the paper. Also, take notice of the Horizon Line (EL) and the Vanishing Point (VP).

27 Single-Point Perspective Grid Exercise The following steps will help you draw these boxes in perspective. Please refer to and memorize the rules for lines.

28 Single-Point Perspective Grid Exercise Draw the two lines you see in this example on the newsprint. Notice that one is above the Horizon Line and one is below. Notice that they are both two lines from the Horizon Line. The length of them does not matter.

Notice that this box s top and bottom planes cannot be seen from our eye level. The converging perspective line that is below our eye level moves upward toward the vanishing point (VP). The converging perspective line that is above our eye level moves downward as they move away from us toward the VP.

32 Single-Point Perspective Grid Exercise Building the left box: Draw the side s top and bottom converging perspective lines. Notice that they are both below the horizon line. Don t worry about the length of them.

34 Single-Point Perspective Grid Exercise VP Box s top, back edge line. Since you have no perspective guide grid-line for the top s back line, you will need to draw one without the guide helping you. Place a straight edge that pivots off the VP. Hold it on the VP with your right hand and swing the left end up and down till you are satisfied with the placement of this line.

35 Single-Point Perspective Grid Exercise Next, draw in the two vertical lines that define the front and back corners of the box.

36 Single-Point Perspective Grid Exercise Next, draw in the top and bottom horizontal lines. Start at the right hand corners of the front side and draw them to the left. I used arrows to show directions for drawing. Notice that this page is not wide enough. Yours will be. Just adjust the top converging perspective line to connect with the horizontal ones.

37 Single-Point Perspective Grid Exercise Notice that unlike the box on the right, the box on the left is completely below the horizon line. Therefore, all converging perspective lines that move away from us, move upward toward the VP.

The, put in your converging perspective lines representing the easy to see lines above and below the horizon. Try to figure things in proportion to each other. Don t worry too much about building tone. This is a perspective exercise. However, if you feel confident enough and have time, start to experiment with tone.
