5 6.2 Layout and Scale The proposal comprises: 01 New Building New 4 storey classroom building with new hall, resource spaces, staff accommodation and roof top play 02 Entrance and Reception The existing Victorian tower will be reinstated as the focal point, front-door and main visitor entrance / reception. Associated internal refurbishment works to convert existing WC / kitchen areas into new entrance and reception. 03 Dining Hall The existing Victorian hall will be used as a refectory 04 Kitchen A new fully cooking kitchen will be built as part of the proposals 05 Galleried cloister New cloistered courtyard at heart of scheme with walkways which link new with existing and unify the buildings Landscape Landscaping to whole site including new M.U.G.A., cycle parking, relocating the bin store and disabled parking bay Cycle Parking Covered and secure cycle parking at entrance to site. The proposals have been developed to compliment the existing Victorian school buildings, not compete with them The intention is that the new classroom building will sit as a brick building, between the existing brick Victorian school buildings and the newer 60s brick buildings completing a more robust outer shell to the quiet and protected playspace within. New walkways provide solar shading to south facing existing classrooms whilst connecting both new and existing buildings and importantly, unifying the existing and disparate buildings giving a new identity for the newly amalgamated school. The section also explains the proposals in the context of the adjacent Christ the Saviour Church. 11 6.4 Appearance - Concept The building concept has been carefully derived from site analysis and the design principles outlined in section 6.3. The new walkways provide much needed solar shading, horizontal circulation and importantly unify the existing and new elevations. The balustrades pick up on the patterns found on the Gothic windows of the existing hall windows. The proposed classroom building relates to the adjacent brick buildings. 13 6.6 Sustainability Sustainability is a key issue and a fundamental part of the design. How the new buildings impact on the environment, their performance and maintenance will all be critical to the school s success. The following measures will be integrated into the design: Building Performance Energy loss minimised by thermally efficient, well insulated buildings Natural ventilation is provided through actuated louvres Good distribution of daylighting, reducing reliance on lighting energy The new classroom building is designed to achieve a BREEAM very good rating Construction waste and materials Considerate Constructors scheme Specification of green materials Waste minimisation and recycling (during building occupation) Space will be provided for segregated storage in classroom and office areas (waste, recyclables etc) Water usage Water saving toilets and taps Biodiversity Refer to Landscape Architect s information for details Sustainable energy On-site photovoltaics and a mini CHP will be used to achieve carbon emission savings of 20% for the new classroom building Bicycles Provision for safe, weather-proof and secure storage for cycles The above should be read in conjunction with the Energy Statement by Hoare Lea which has been submitted in support of this application. exhaust air/high level mechanically vented classrooms existing trees retained proposed location of mini CHP proposed location of photovoltaic panels proposed location of secured cycle storage Hawkins\Brown December
