Ed has given many great talks in the past we certainly look forward to more in the future. His last talk was on Canadian Type Sets, we could only imagine what more educational talks he will bring before our membership. As for our June general meeting speaker we are lucky have Michael S. Turrini come down from up north to give one of his well-known talks to further educate his fellow hobbyists. SJCC/CCC Annual Picnic Summer is here and our annual picnic is approaching. The joint San Jose Coin Club and Cupertino Coin Club is approaching us. The picnic will be on Saturday August second at Las Palmas Park. Don t miss out on the fun, great food, and drawing prizes for all in attendance. Be sure to fill your reservation form which is attached to this newsletter. A marvelous evening of dinner, awards, time with fellow numismatists, and games filled the banquet hall of Three Flames. Congratulations also go out to our newest member of the San Jose Coin Club Hall Of Fame Kim Alt. Kim s support for San Jose Coin Club devotion through the years has helped build it to what it is today. Gordon opened up the floor on how he would like the board of directors to find ways of increasing membership and to get more individuals to join us. Recording Secretary, Ryan Johnson waived reading of the general meeting minutes. Corresponding Secretary, Lyle Okamoto reported the usual club mail, a letter from second harvest, and a letter from the bank. Treasurer, Sally Johnson reported the club balance. President, Gordon Stubbs reported that Bill Meadows has agreed to continue as the curator. Historian, Harold Woron reported that he has pictures from the banquet. Program Chair, Gordon Stubbs reported that Michael S. Turrini will be speaking at the June General Meeting on The Color of Money Pageant. Medals Chair, Gordon Stubbs reported he has sent the winning medal design drawing to Lee Kuntz of Masterpiece Medallions and the die should be finished by the end of next month. Banquet Chair, Dean Birge reported that the banquet was a success with twenty-nine attendees and asked for input regarding date and location for next year. Dean reported that he will volunteer to be the banquet chair again for next year and will pencil in April 26 th and May 3 rd as tentative dates. Youth Advisor, Sally Johnson reported that two youth were in attendance at the last general meeting and Youth President, Matthew Downing has started helping as the auction runner and has volunteered to help with youth. Newsletter Editor, Ryan Johnson reported that the picnic form for the San Jose Coin Club Cupertino Coin Club Joint Picnic will be in the next newsletter as well as the open auction chair position. Webmaster, Sally Johnson reported that the website has 28,937 hits which is up 197 hits from last month. Sally also reported that the CSNA Northern Show has been canceled. Gordon Stubbs would like to see a member s only section on the website for paid club members featuring educational lectures, notes, and further educational material. OLD BUSINESS: Fred Davis reported the hall of fame plaque has been engraved with the newest hall of fame members name. Fred asked if we are going to hold on to it for the inductee or mail it to them. Dean Birge stated he will call the Hall of Fame Nominee to see what they would like to have happen. Sally Johnson reported that we pulled in $120 from the Santa Clara Show drawing for the San Jose Coin Club youth program and an anonymous donation of $50 was made for a total of $170. Al Lo stated that Cupertino Coin Clubs proposal for renting equipment from San Jose Coin Club has been done and Cupertino will approve it. Sally Johnson reported that Cupertino Coin Club still owes $150 for this year s rental. The records show that no payment has been received for this year and none for Sally showed a copy of the present records showing nonpayment. Dean Birge read the amended proposal, Sally Johnson objected to the dates in which the Cupertino Coin Club pays to San Jose Coin Club. Al Lo stated he will check with Gary Aquistipace at the board meeting about the payments sent to San Jose Coin Club. Al Lo asked if the club would be willing to donate the 1 remaining good sign. Ryan Johnson advised that Cupertino should purchase it instead. Martha Davis made a motion for Cupertino Coin Club to purchase the sign for $10, the question was raised if she had authorization to do make the purchase, and Martha amended the motion to be the purchaser of the sign for $10. The question was raised that it was now a private party transaction instead. Ryan Johnson stated an open motion was already on the floor and refused to amend it. Martha Davis retracted her motion in its entirety. Ryan s motion was seconded. 0-Opposed Meeting adjourned at 9:03PM. 8 Reales "Birmingham" Forgery This one is a "Birmingham" forgery - made in England between 1796 and about It is a Sheffield plate copy of a Mexico City 8R of Charles III with a fake counter stamp of the Bank of England - the portrait is George III. Originals of this coin gave rise to the limerick - "The Bank (of England) in order to make its money pass, stamped the head of a fool on the neck of an ass." A Sheffield plate is a sandwich of two thin layers of silver over a core of brass or copper. This technique was introduced in Sheffield, England to make inexpensive silver flat ware. It got taken over by counterfeiters shortly thereafter. The silver is usually fine so that the surface color was right. The layers were hot or cold welded with high pressure rollers. The material was drawn out to the proper thickness and cut with a cookie cutter. The edge where there was exposed copper needed some cover up work, but they were very good copies. Die work was decent - some dies were attributed to Matthew Bolton himself but some like this one are not perfect, so that it would be possible to detect them without the test cuts. The original Birmingham issue (of the two) was done at the outset of the war with Spain (1796). These do not have the counter stamp. The mint facilities in Birmingham produced tens of thousands of these with the indirect support of the English government. They were exported to the orient. It was hoped that the influx of "bad" Bustman dollars would destabilize the Spanish monetary system. The majority of these coins were discovered and destroyed rather quickly and the effort was a failure. Within a very few years, Spain had published a list of 18 dates that it attributed to the Birmingham mints. This list is incorporated in Coronado's book on Spanish counterfeits. They are detectable by their use of incorrect fonts and by the way they are edged. The Birmingham product used a single die edger and applied a strip of silver on the edge to cover the core. The usually have a single overlap of the edge detail and often have rolled edges - not sharp ones like originals. The second and far more common type of Birmingham is the type you have. These were made in the same mints often with the same dies. Some experts believe many were simple "leftovers" from the earlier effort. These coins are counter stamped with the George III puncheon. These stayed at home in England and were so common that they gave rise to a special act of Parliament. Prior to that it was technically not illegal to copy token coinages. For those who may not know - the Geo III punch is one of three attempts by the Bank of England to get silver back into circulation during the monetary emergency of the very early 1800s. England was at war and needed money to fight but they also were trying to hold the line on the value of the pound sterling. World silver prices were high so any "full weight" coins issued would immediately be melted for the silver - so NONE were made. Old worn coins (down to 50% or so) remained in circulation. So the Bank took 8R coins and stamped them to raise their face value above the silver content. These would not be melted. This caused the counterfeiters to drag out their presses. So that is what you have. The 1781 is actually the earliest date attributed to Birmingham. They were made until the late teen's of the 19th century. Although they are common - they are very popular and bring high prices. Numerous punches are known.
