A huge thank you goes to every single person that participated in the Christmas party this year. This year Santa needed a break and we had to all get in as Santas little helpers and share some gifts with each other. Many great gifts were swapped with one another. It was a fantastic Christmas party and we can t wait to do it again next year. January Speaker Our upcoming speaker for our January general meeting is a past president and hall of fame member, Martha Davis, speaking on 100 Grand! In the past Martha has given some exciting and definitely some interactive talks to our members. We can t wait to see what she brings to the meeting. Let s see who wins her prize. Please see any of the chairs to sign up to help. We look for help from everyone to help make this show the success it is. Setup date is Thursday January 21 st at 2PM and we look for all the help to ensure we can get our dealers in on a timely manner. There are many jobs that can be done to help assist in kicking off the show. It is also important that we have enough individuals to help man the front desk throughout the show. Finally Sunday is cleanup day, collection of show cases and reloading equipment of the trailer goes much faster with the assistance of our members. Sign up sheets for multiple jobs will be available at the January General Meeting. Medals Orders Medals are on the way! We are anticipating the delivery of the 2016 club medal by the General Meeting or by the 2016 San Jose Coin & Collectibles show. For those waiting to have medals shipped to them. All medals will be shipped after the conclusion of the show. EXHIBITS NEEDED FOR 2016 SHOW As numismatists not only do we enjoy learning about our hobby but we also enjoy sharing our knowledge and our collections. During the San Jose Coin Show you have the opportunity to share your collections with other numismastist as an exhibitor at the annual show. See the rules on the form attached! San Jose Coin Club meets on the 2 nd Wed. of each of month (January 13 th this month) at American Legion Hall, Post 318, 1504 Minnesota Ave., San Jose. 2 January 2016 TODO DINERO Page 2 US Dime Struck on Nail Realizes $42,300 An undated Roosevelt dime struck on a 6-penny nail realized $42,300 in Heritage s Florida United Numismatists U.S. Coins Signature Auction in Tampa. The error, graded MS65 PCGS, had a pre-auction estimate of $10,000+. It was purchased by a prominent American collector of many kinds of collectibles across a wide range of categories, according to Heritage."Significant error coins are among the most sought-after in the hobby," said Greg Rohan, President of Heritage Auctions, "as evidenced by the spirited bidding among collectors over this coin." What is known is that the zinc-coated nail found its way into the coinage production line during the minting of Roosevelt dimes and apparently escaped through normal distribution channels."this is certainly among the most unique and mysterious errors to ever come to auction," Rohan said. "The truth is, no one really knows how or why it was struck." This error coin is not the first coin to have such a distinction. A few examples of cents struck on nails were discovered in the 1970s, notes Heritage. The total number of similar errors is thought to be around six.heritage Auctions is the largest auction house founded in the U.S. and the world s third largest, with annual sales of about $900 million and over 950,000 online bidder members. Recording Secretary, Ryan Johnson waived reading of the general meeting minutes. Ray Johnson reported on behalf of Treasurer, Sally Johnson stating that a deposit was recently made. Librarian, Ed Sins reported nothing new. Curator report, Dean Birge reported nothing new. Webmaster Ryan Johnson reported the website is being brought up to date but is taking time due to the amout of information that needs to be updated. Newsletter Editor Ryan Johnson had nothing new to report. Program Chair, Dean Birge reported that the speaker in January will be Martha Davis on 100 Grand, February will be Giant Show and Tell, March is open, April will be Elections and Medal Design competition, July is Ray Johnson and June, September and November are all open. Medals Chair, Ryan Johnson brought up if we wanted to continue to purchase the same quantity of medals. Rick Hagen made a motion to continue to purchase the Nickel Silver and Oxidized Medals for the Presidential sets. The motion was seconded. Mario Miramontes made a motin to strike only 30 aluminum medals, Ken Barr moved to amend the motion to 40 medals. Herb Davidson seconded the motion. Ken Barr donated $20 to offset the cost. Ken Barr asked if we should continue to purchase the remaining 40 ounces of silver. Ryan Johnson suggested purchasing the remaining 40 ounces of silver as long we can get it under $16 an ounce. asked Membership Chair Ed Sins had nothing new to report. OLD BUSINESS: Dean Birge reported that he has two sets of keys to the Legion Hall with the third keyholder being Sally Johnson. Dean Birge turned one of the keys over to Lyle Okamoto. Ken Bar inquired about the website being down, Ryan Johnson stated it was in the process of being updated. Ken Barr presented the San Jose Coin Club drawing spreadsheet showing a cumulative loss of $177 over the year. Herb Davidson suggested talking to the membership about increasing the cost of the raffle tickets to $2 per ticket. Ed Sins suggested making the budget for the raffle prizes to $2355. Herb secnded the motion. Dean stated we will continue with 10 raffle prizes. NEW BUSINESS: Ryan Johnson turned over the first book of raffle tickets to Dean Birge. SHOW BUSINESS: Ray Johnson reported that the show is almost sold out. One of the dealers might not be able to attend the show. Bill Higgins should be passing out a form for sign-ups regarding the front desk. Cases and electrical will need to be setup. Ray mentioned that the stamp show had their last show at the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds and proposed that they have their show at the Doubletree in the upstairs ballroom. Dean suggested that Ray talk to the Stamp Show Bourse Chair abou thte proposal. Ray stated that the Stamp show bourse chair will be at the January Coin Show. First Street,SJ Alice in Wonderland Clock Coin Mike Unser Occasionally I gamble on unconventional coins, buying some that aren t always in my comfort zone because they re unique and unusual. I ve done this more often with products from the Royal Canadian Mint and the Perth Mint of Australia. These world mints are among the ones going where others can t or haven t, like using color and other embellishments in making coins. Some collectors like that, some don t. Honestly, I stayed away from colorized coins and the like until a few years ago. After buying a couple, I realized I was probably too uptight in my thinking. (A display at the U.S. Mint in Denver is mindful that items like animal teeth and shells were once used as money.) Anyway and to the main point of this article, this summer I found myself looking at a product that was certainly different. The Perth Mint released an Alice in Wonderland "clock coin" that was struck in 2 ounces of 99.9% pure silver, had a pronounced 6 mm thickness, and an antique finish that was promoted as distinctive for each coin. I decided to grab one. It is very unique to say the least. And while I m not into packaging as I ve said many times before, I m pretty impressed with its presentation as well. If the product was cheaper issued for AUS $226 although I spent around US $160, it d make for a nice gift to lure others into coin collecting. Below are some photos of the coin and its packaging.
