Ray will be speaking about half dollar type coins especially the 1700 s and early 1800 s. Come you might see a coin you might never see again. March minutes Pete called the meeting to order at 7:10. The Treasurers and Secretaries reports were read and accepted. Old and new businesses was discussed. 2 show. Frank D Atri then spoke about coin auctions, some of the takeaway points were to get a catalog in advance and do your homework to know how much a coin should cost. Also know what the rules are for an auction (No return policy, Buyers premium, ect). Frank then officiated our club auction with about 30 lots and 300 dollars in total sales. Raffle prizes were then drawn and the YN and 50/50 prizes were selected. The meeting adjourned at 9:00. Secretary's Report The members in attendance accepted the Secretary s report as amended in the newsletter. Treasurer s report Balance: $3, The members present approved the Treasurers report as published in the last newsletter. A detailed breakdown of the club income and expenses was available at the meeting. Old Business The spring show ( ) is getting under way. Most of the tables are sold. It should be a great show. New Business Helpers for the spring show setup should arrive at 6:30. Coffee and donuts will be available. Come and help, the more that come the easier it will be. Board Meeting On March 20, Pete, Char, Arthur, Howard, Al, Guy, Melissa, Jim, John, and Tim met to discuss club business for the April meeting. There are many raffle prizes and one member s prizes. This month many of the raffle prizes are silver. With all these good prizes the more tickets you buy the better your chances to win. 3 Coin of the month Susan B. Anthony Dollars By Jim Davis This month the coin of the month is the Susan B. Anthony dollar. This coin is one of the least popular coins ever issued by the mint. Struck only four years, and 1999, this coin is a prime example of what can go wrong when politicians get involved in coin designs. As early as 1977, plans were underway to replace the large, noncirculating IKE dollar with a smaller coin. Another reason to issue a small dollar coin was to replace paper dollar bills. The logic being was paper dollars only last about 18 months while dollar coins can last decades. After given the assignment to design a small dollar coin, Frank Gasparro s first effort was to re-imagine Liberty with flowing hair like the images from the 1790 s. This is when the politicians stepped in. They insisted instead of Liberty a portrait of a famous woman be used. After some debate, they chose Susan B, Anthony, a famous suffragette. Legislation for this coin was quickly passed by the Democrats and signed into law by President Carter. Physically the coin is copper-nickel clad similar in composition to the current dime, quarter and half. The coin is sized midway between the quarter and half at 26.5mm. The weight of the coin is 8.1 grams and has a reeded edge. Despite the difference in size and weight, many people still confused this coin with the quarter. Some even mocked the coin referring to it as the Carter Quarter. The obverse depicts Gasparro s uninspired portrait of Anthony circled by 13 stars, In God We Trust and the date. The inner edge is designed to give the illusion of being an 11-sided coin. The mintmark appears above the shoulder behind the head. This is the first circulating coin since 1945 to bear a P mintmark and the first to use the S mintmark since The following year, the P mintmark was added to nickels, dimes quarters and halves. The reverse is a direst copy of the IKE dollar. I feel the coin despite its negative aesthetics is an interesting set to assemble. There are 15 coins in the basic set. If you add the three major varieties, the total increases to 18. The first variety is the 1979-P near date or wide rim. The difference in the rim is minor but when seen side by side is noticeable. The next varieties are on proof coins. In 1979, proofs were struck with a blob-like mintmark. Sometime mid-year, the dies were re- April 2017 Award Winning Elgin Coin Club Newsletter Page 3

4 made using a clearer S. In 1981 the mintmark was again altered mid-year. In both cases the second variety is more valuable. Complete sets of Anthony dollars are easily purchased. The basic set generally sells in the $ range while the set with all varieties can run in the $ range. As with most clad coinage certified high grade business strikes are scarce and very expensive.
