Martha presented the membership with the most interactive talk of the year which, by being enticed by 100 Grand Candy bars, also required member participation and sharing. Our February Meeting will also be our Giant Show and Tell, so bring your new finds in and share them with us. Are you interested in promoting the hobby more? Are you interested in helping to make a difference in the hobby? Elections for the San Jose Coin Club Board of Directors is coming up in April and we are looking for some individuals willing to volunteer and help the club out throughout the year. It is because of the volunteers at the show and behind the scenes who help make our show grow and succeed as it has since the beginning. We have recognized everyone who helped put on this show on page number 2. If we missed anyone we do apologize as it is our intention to recognize everyone who took the time out of their day to help. It is time to submit your Hall of Fame nominations to Hall of Fame Chair Ed Sins. Every year a nomination is made for an individual who has given the club loyalty in helping the club to grow and to succeed. Nominations can be submitted by anyone in the club and will be voted on by the board of directors. Medal Orders The Medals are here! Medals will be available for pickup at the February General Meeting. For those waiting to have medals shipped them. All medals will be shipped out very soon! Since we are on the topic of medals, it is almost that time to start submitting our designs in for the 2017 San Jose Coin Club medal competition. All designs must be submitted no later than the board meeting March 28, 2016 prior to our medals competition. The rules for the medal design competition will be attached in the newsletter. So, break out the drawing utensils and submit your artwork! It might be on the clubs next medal! San Jose Coin Club meets on the 2 nd Wed. of each of month (February 10 th this month) at American Legion Hall, Post 318, 1504 Minnesota Ave., San Jose. Featuring a leaping cougar and roaring grizzly bear, both coins were unveiled at this year s World Money Fair in Berlin, Germany. The Royal Canadian Mint s new 2016 Roaring Grizzly Gold Coin and 2016 Cougar Silver Coin were unveiled at the World Money Fair The Mint introduced its first coin from a new, four-coin "Predator" series. Featuring 1-ounce silver coins that are struck in 99.99% pure silver, the series celebrates some of Canada s most iconic animals of prey. The 2016-dated Cougar piece is the first of the four coins, and is limited to a maximum mintage of 1 million. Designed by Canadian artist Emily Damstra, a leaping cougar is shown against a background of precise radial lines. Inscriptions include CANADA, 9999, FINE SILVER, 1 OZ, ARGENT PUR and ED for the artist s initials. The 2016 Roaring Grizzly Gold Coin is the latest release from the Royal Canadian Mint s "Call of the Wild" series of $200 gold coins struck to % purity. Designed by Canadian artist Pierre Leduc, the grizzly appears in front of 8 thick lines representing the sound waves of the bear s chilling roar. Inscriptions around the 2016 coin include CANADA, FINE GOLD, and 1 OZ OR PUR. Both coins feature a microengraved maple leaf mint mark for enhanced security. Like other world mints, the Royal Canadian Mint does not sell bullion coins directly to the public. Instead, buyers are encouraged to contact a reputable bullion dealer to order them. HAVE YOU MOVED? 5 SAN JOSE COIN CLUB MEDAL DESIGN CONTEST RULES 1. The design must be submitted by a San Jose Coin club member. 2. The design shall be on 8½ x 11 unlined paper in a circle of a minimum of 4 to a maximum of 8 in diameter. 3. A maximum of two designs is allowed per person. 4. The subject matter of each submitted design may be in the form of a single drawing, photo, postcard or a group of drawings in one design. Since most members of the club are non artists, subject matter can be cut out or photocopied pictures, etc. 5. The subject matter of the reverse design (not included in this contest) will be the San Jose Coin Club logo and/or club information, as designated by the board of directors. 6. The subject matter of the obverse design shall be of the designer s choice and include the year of the next show. The Board reserves the right to reject any questionable subject matter designs. (This design cannot be used) 7. A written explanation of the submitted design can be included for clarification. 8. No names or initials are permitted on your design; these will be added to the winning design after the judging. 9. If the entry is of a private or commercial subject matter, the designer must obtain written permission from that owner and submit this permission with the design. If permission is not granted, the design will be disqualified. 10. Entries may be mailed to the club address (San Jose Coin Club, PO Box 5621, San Jose, CA 95150) or brought to the General Meeting. Entries must be submitted in a sealed envelope, with the member s name, and the words Medal Design Contest Chair on the outside of the envelope. 11. All entries must be postmarked or submitted on or before the date of the regular March General Meeting. 12. In the event of IDENTICAL designs, the first submitted will be entered in the contest. 13. The winning design becomes the property of the San Jose Coin Club and will not be returned; all others will be returned. 14. The San Jose Coin Club Board of Directors reserves the right to modify the winning design to meet the requirements of the minting process. Any modifications will be cleared with the designer(s). 15. If the Medal Design Contest Chair submits a design, the President, at his/her discretion, shall appoint an alternate Medal Design Contest Chair to conduct the medal design contest process.
