While the majority of the collection is post-wwii philatelic material, there is some earlier content and numerous pickings throughout. The albums have not been well-stored resulting in some mostly minor toning. 3 Prestige Philately - Auction No 182 Page: 3 PICTURE POSTCARDS - The Kevin Crotty Collection - Rural Australia Ex Lot C WINE & GRAPES: Mostly South Australian group with vineyards, pickers, prize-winning bunches (including Queensland 1915 Panama-Pacific Exposition card used in the USA), wineries including 6 advertising cards for Burgoyne's Wineries, etc. (54) 400T ANTARCTICA The major section below is the Large Gold Medal exhibit formed by Paul Wales, owner of leading Antarctic dealer Classic Stamps in New Zealand. Robert Falcon Scott's National Antarctic Expedition was one of the major undertakings of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. Paul Wales' telling of the Expedition story brings home the courage of the expeditioners, the privations and dangers they endured, and the significant discoveries they made. The human element is also interwoven with the social and postal history aspects. We are delighted to have been chosen to present this important Open Class exhibit at auction C/L Ex Lot 2397 AMERICAN: Byrd Expedition group with two pages of photographs of Chief Petty Officer Charles Lofgren & his girlfriend Jeanne Norton, very fine; two editions of the Expedition's newspaper both with large 'SOUTH POLAR MAIL' cachet in violet & signed "CE Lofgren"; Expedition envelope endorsed "Little America Anta" & addressed to Lofgren but unused; two Expedition Radiogram messages, one from Byrd, the other to "SS City of New York, Bay of Whales, Antarctica" advising that Captain Griswold, another officer, & three men were killed off the Panama Canal when their boat collided with a barge; condition a bit mixed. [Charles E Lofgren was Byrd's secretary & the Expedition's personnel officer. Byrd named Lofgren Peninsula after him] (13 items) BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION - Outwards Voyage 1,250T 2423 C B Lot cover with embossed 'DISCOVERY ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION/[penguin]' crest in blue on the flap, addressed in the hand of Dr Louis Bernacchi to a lady friend in London with 1d Universal tied by 'LYTTELTON' squared-circle & note on the flap "don't destroy this envelope", London arrival on the face & redirected to the USA incurring postage due with US 'COLLECT/POSTAGE 3 CENTS' h/s & Postage Due 3c tied to the reverse by New York duplex & again forwarded, to Ohio with 'YOUNGSTOWN' arrival b/s, minor blemishes. Very few taxed Expedition covers are recorded. [Louis Charles Bernacchi was the Expedition's physicist. In 1906, Scott was best man at Bernacchi's wedding] 1,500T

4 Prestige Philately - Auction No 182 Page: BRITISH ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION - Longhurst Letters Cyril Longhurst was Secretary to Sir Clements Markham & the National Antarctic Expedition. He was also a confidante of Mrs Hannah Scott, Captain Scott's mother, & is revealed by the letters in this section to have been both an informative and at times remarkably injudicious correspondent. All are holograph letters - written entirely by Longhurst - to Hannah Scott, on Expedition octavo notepaper, unless noted otherwise, Longhurst was Ernest Shackleton's best man &, in 1907, Shackleton named Antarctica's Mount Cyril after his friend. (We expect the estimates will prove to be quite conservative: in 2007, Christie's sold a relatively bland & largely non-antarctic group of Longhurst letters plus other memorabilia for 4375.) 2490 L A Lot letter headed "29 November" & signed "Cyril Longhurst", advising of receipt of a telegram from Captain Scott "Lyttelton...Entered Pack [ice]...called Macquaree [sic; Macquarie Island] obtained series of magnetic observations... ship behaves well...only regret very limited time". 1,000T 2491 L A- Lot letter headed "Nov 29" & signed "Ninna Markham" - wife of Sir Clements Markham - to Hannah Scott, advising of the same telegram and repeating Scott's error "Macquaree". 750T

All proofs are imperforate on gummed unwatermarked paper. In almost all cases there are four colour separation proofs plus the composite or finished proof (in the issued colours), five in all. Many lots include press releases, order forms and/or First Day Covers. These are not mentioned in the descriptions, nor included in our estimates. All material is from the personal archive of Finbar Kenny, the American who was responsible for all Cook Islands issues between 1965 & his death in P** A Ex Lot American Bicentenary $1 & $2 imperforate final proof sheetlets of 6 (5 stamps + label) & the M/S plus colour separation proofs and the issued $3 M/S, unmounted. 7 Prestige Philately - Auction No 182 Page: 7 HONG KONG - Postal History 2606 CL B INDIA - Postal History Lot triple rate British War Organisation Fund Hong Kong cover to the USA with Centenary 15c Harbour x4, boxed 'NOT OPENED/BY/CENSOR' h/s (Morenweiser #7c; double-strike) in violet & superb boxed '45' Censor's h/s on the reverse, minor blemishes. [The foreign letter rate was 30c for the first 1oz + 15c for each additional ounce x2 = 60c] CL B Lot complete registered packet wrapper by air to the USA with Indian Jute Mills Association Research Institute label & complete Customs Declaration affixed to the reverse, KGVI 4as, 2r x2 & 5r tied by Calcutta cds, American 'Supposed liable to customs duty' & 'PASSED FREE/...' h/s both in purple, minor defects. A remarkable survivor, and excellent addition to an Indian postal rates collection. [The contents were declared as a jute sample, of no commercial value] NAURU - POSTAL HISTORY The postal history material is all from the collection formed by Dr Thomas Osdene from the United States. All covers are believed to be commercial, unless stated otherwise. Because the American firm that sold this material focussed on the stamps, many very scarce rates and usages were not identified, including some that were found in mixed lots. This is one of the best postal history selections from Nauru that we have offered. We commend this material to our clients C B Lot (mid) cover to a Nauruan sailor at San Francisco with Overprints 1d x3 (one creased before being affixed) tied by very fine boxed 'LOOSE SHIP LETTER' h/s of Melbourne (b/s of 26AU21), minor blemishes. The only such paquebot cover we have seen from Nauru. [The foreign rate was increased from 3d to 4d on 1/10/1920 but notice of rate changes was often very slow to reach the inhabitants of the more remote islands] 1,000

8 Prestige Philately - Auction No 182 Page: 8 NAURU - POSTAL HISTORY (continued) 2631 C B Lot (Jan 19) much-travelled American 2c Envelope from 'ITHACA/NY' to "Wake Island/Pacific" with numerous transits including 'TOKIO', Sydney several times where probably endorsed "Try via Honolulu", 'NAURU/19JE29/ CENTRAL/PACIFIC' & manuscript "Not Nauru" in red, Sydney DLO & manuscript "T30". A remarkable cover to an extraordinary destination. [Even though annexed by the USA as a proposed cable station, there were no inhabitants on Wake until 1935 when Pan Am established "PAAville" as a refuelling point] NEW GUINEA - 'N.W./PACIFIC/ISLANDS' Overprints - Postal History C A- Lot cover to Texas with Roos 2d 2½d & 3d tied by 'RABAUL/NEW BRITAIN' cds with Reversed 'N' in 'BRITAIN', scarce black/white registration label with No Stop after 'RABAUL', Sydney & American backstamps, redirected to Kansas. NEW GUINEA - Mandated Territory Issues - Postal History CL B Lot (Jan) Chinese trader's cover by air to New York endorsed "North Atlantic/Service" with rare franking of Bulolo 3d 1/- & 5/- tied by Rabaul cds, red/white 'OPENED BY CENSOR' label & boxed 'Passed by Censor/TNG No 10' cachet, Townsville transit b/s, minor blemishes. [Until recently, we had never seen a 5/- Bulolo on cover. However, this is the second we have offered. In our auction of 22/2/2013, a similar cover to Canada - by trans-pacific "Clipper" service - described as "Probably the pre-eminent commercial airmail cover from New Guinea" - sold for $3910. The quality of this cover is slightly better. It is also travelling by a different route, via the UK & across the Atlantic. Richard Breckon states the "all-the-way" by air rate was 3/2d per ½oz. However, the empirical evidence provided by this cover is that the fee for the second ½oz was 3/1d] 3,000T

9 Prestige Philately - Auction No 182 Page: 9 PAPUA - Flight Covers 2793 C A- Lot Roessler cover to the United States with combination franking of Papuan 'AIR MAIL' 3d & USA 5c Air Mail both tied by 'PORT MORESBY/11MAR30/PAPUA' cds, the US stamp also cancelled at Sydney 19MR30 where boxed 'INSUFFICIENTLY PREPAID/FOR AIR MAIL SERVICE' h/s applied in red, minor staining from the adhesive on the flaps. A desirable albeit philatelic combination cover, of which the AAMC at page 226 states only 15 are recorded from Papua. Between 1924 & 1937 the Australian Post Office Regulations - which also applied in the Territories - allowed for airmail covers to America to be pre-paid in this manner. In this instance, the handstamp was applied in error: there was no trans-pacific airmail so the 3d stamps properly paid for the surface rate. The US 5c was correct for air mail within the United States. 400T
